Tamil Cinema Music in 2006: A 2-CD Compilation

As I mentioned when I compiled the list of my favorite Tamil movie songs from 2005, 10 is a very restrictive number when compiling a year-end list of songs. So instead of the usual 'top 10' list, here are 32 songs for a 2-CD compilation of the best Tamil film songs in 2006.

If I only had 10 songs to list, they would be (in no particular order as I have listened to all these songs almost the same number of times):

Dailaamo (Dishyum)
Kaadhal Neruppin (Veyyil)
Aanum Pennum (Uyir)
Loosu Pennae (Vallavan)
Atrai Thingal (Sivappadhigaaram)
Loosu Pennae (Vallavan)
Namma Kaattula (Pattiyal)
Poga Poga (Pattiyal)
Kannai Vittu (Pattiyal)
Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (SOK)

Somehow, I feel all songs in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu are also-rans.. pretty much since most of them have a similar feel to Kaakha Kaakha. That being the case, I'd rather listen to KK.. Sorry Harris!

nice lists, bb and sandya...

i feel that the "vaazha meenuku" song is a triumph of marketing more than talent! the tune's decent alright but nothing extraordinary that its being perceived as the "song of the year." i'll take deva's "thirupathi ezhumala venkatesa" over this any day...

ram, agree with you on Vaazha...and the same goes for Loosu Penne.
BB, if you didnt notice it before, I'd recommend Bhavadharini's Amirtham to you. 3 lovely songs - the one in reethigowlai was fantastic.
Vidyasagar's thambi had more than Sudum Nilavu going for it.

Karthik Raja solla vaarthaigal from mercury Pookkal and Kangal Thedutahe from Manadhodu.. also are worth a dekko

sandya, u must like 'loosu penne' a whole lot since u've listed it twice? :)

but seriously, no surprises in ur list there. except for 'sillunu oru kaadhal', all the other songs found their place on my CDs too :) but surprised u found VV songs to be also-rans. i absolutely love them. the album would be a close 2nd to 'pudhuppettai' for my album of the year :)

ram, i rarely like songs the first time. but when i saw 'chithiram pesudhadi', i liked 'vaazha meenu' the first time itself.

raj, i remember liking 'amirtham' songs when i saw the film but didnt get a chance to listen to the songs later...

Oops.. I didn't like Loosu Penne that much.. but then again, can't do much to erase that impression from your mind anymore! :-) ;-)

I don't know.. everytime BJ starts singing Paartha Mudhale.. there is such a pulichchu pona feeling about it.. maybe BJ has to sing something peppy for Harris to give us a change of pace. That's what I vote for! :-) ;-) Manjal Veyyil is good to listen to, but somehow that got boring too after the second listen.

I thought Kaakha Kaakha songs had a glue effect (even Ghajini songs for that matter; despite X-machi, Rahatulla & Rangola not being earth shattering!)..

Overall, 2006 has been okay on the music front. For fear of beginning to sound like "ram," 2000 was one of our finest on the musical front also! :-) ;-)

My Top 10 wud be...

Munbe Vaa (SOK)[No 1. Way up... Fantastic arpeggios]
Jillendru Oru Kaadhal (SOK) [Nice Orchestration]
Thadakku (Aadhi) [Nice rhythmic melody]
Urugudhae (Veiyil) [Shankar paadaradha kekkarache urugaama irukkumaa?]
Aasai Dosai (Paramasivan) [Top female dappanguthu in recent times]
Namma Kaattula (Pattiyal) [Wierd remix, but nice]
Theeyil Vizhundha (Godfather) [One of the best soga pattu of this year]
Something (S. S.) [Very uplifting song]
Vaazha Meen (C. P.) [Simple and fun lyrics. Funny video]
Loosu Pennae (V) [Good Video. OK song.]

If next year movies can be included, I would go with the following instead of Loosu Pennae...

Vasantha Mullai (Pokkiri) [Fun song]

Prin’s hilarious account of 2007 in Kollywood

January

T. Rajender’s Veerasamy flops miserably in the Pongal race but he self proclaims it’s the best tearjerker made. Aalwar flops as Ajith’s weight increases and Pokiri flops as Vijay decides to be a police. Ameer’s Paruthi Veeran becomes a massive hit and wins ameer, ‘the saddest director’ award at International level edging out a disappointed Cheran. Karthi Sivakumar signs twenty films at once including one with Nagma as heroine causing controversy.

February

Jeeva’s Pori creates sparks because of Pooja’s skimpy outfits and so does Pachakili Muthucharam as Milind Soman becomes the next evil craze after, ‘Jeevan’ and ‘Daniel Balaji’. Unnale Unnale is blasted as a stupid film as Tanisha is blasted for not looking like her sis, Kajol. Simbhu claims he is set to start his next project called, ‘Kettavan’ with ‘Thamiraparani’ Bhanu (the Nayantara lookalike), Riya Sen (cousin of Reema Sen) and a white girl, probably Paris Hilton, as heroines. T. Rajender claims the Diwali battle will be between two brothers, so he introduces T. R. Kularasan, who looks like a miniature version of his father. Jayam Ravi’s film ‘Deepavali’ creates confusion as it is released on Valentine’s Day. The Sivaji: The Boss songs are released.

March

The Dasavatharam songs are released only to find that hey are the exact same songs as Sivaji, Kamal sports another get-up to avoid questions. Dhanush’s ‘Parattai’ gets released alongside Cheran’s ‘Mayakannadi’ both become damp squibs at the box-office. Suriya claims Gautham Menon is the best director, only to change his mind after seeing that Gautham has turned into Perarasu beating up random people in the film. Speaking of Perarasu he announces his next film with Vikram called ‘Paramakudi’ with Ileana in the lead role and himself in an Item Number titled, ‘Superman’.

April

Sivaji’s release is delayed as Shankar claims, they still haven’t shot 50 percent of the film, despite Shriya’s claims that the film finished last year. Dasavatharam, however is released where one Kamal each is paired with, Asin, Mallika Sherawat and Jayaprada. The other Kamals are paired with each other. Kamal therefore becomes the talk of the town. Vaaranam Aayiram flops becoming Gautham’s debut flop. And on a good note………finally, Vivek’s Solli Adipen releases but also flops.

May

Ajith’s Kireedam becomes a blockbuster at the box-office because Rajkiran has gone one step further in terms of village acting, he sports only a small sheet of paper to cover his *****. This becomes the new style of the town and Gana Ulaganathan sings a song on it. Bharath’s Koodal Nagar and Killadi releases on the same day with Koodal Nagar becoming a hit. Madhavan’s Arya finally releases, speaking of Madhavan despite the several projects he has signed in Tamil, none release but he
Becomes the star of Bollywood acting in 20 films in a guest role.

June

Rajiv Menon announces his next film, it will be called ‘Sangeetham’ it will star Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Isha Koppikar, Madhavan, Mamooty, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Surya and Vikram but he cancels it the next day. Shankar saves Vijay by announcing a film called ‘WORLD’ starring him in 7 roles, then he remembers it’s Vijay and changes the actor to Vishal, who wants to ghost-direct the film. Mani Ratnam announces his next Tamil fim, titled , ‘Eelam’ starring, ‘you guessed it’ Madhavan, Meera Suryah (Meera Jasmine’s new name after her marriage with SJ Suryah) with Arvind Swamy in a guest role. Billa starring Ajith is coming on well, with Vishnuvardhan saying he’s watched the original 7000 times, 6800 more than when he commented last time.

Stay tuned for the second half later…

Balji, post this please. Thanks

balaj, looks like yuvan ruled your CDs. you gotta give it to him. he has been very reliable unlike ARR who had been reserving all his best tunes for the oscars.

Nice list Balaji. But Sudum Nilavu from Thambi is a sweet melody from vidyasagar.

I really love the lyrics and music of partha Naal muthale from VV. THis is my first most-liked song of 2006

yeah, i agree with karthikeyan...i loved the "kaadhalithu paar" bit from the "Sudum Nilavu" song...

sandya, yes, i have to agree with u on 2000's songs...i remember buying a helluva lot of CDs and casettes (!) in '99 and '00...vaali, sangamam, poovelaam kaettupaar, taal, en swaasa kaatre, rhythm, alaipayuthey, kandukonden, hey ram, bharathi and a lot of other films were very good albums...

I was always thinking, if someone told me a list of all the good songs in the recent year(s), that wud be great.

Since the list has "nenjankootil" and SOK that i already like, I m sure the other recos will be good too

For me,munbe vaa will definately be the first song for 2006. Here in Malaysia, the song is the top( according to a survey done by a local private radio channel).

And yea, theeyil viluntha thena is superb.with ARR's voice and Vairamuthu's lyrics made me choose it.

Well,my list of 10 songs will be : (even though i do admit 10 is too restricted)

1.Munbe Vaa - JOK
2.Uruguthe - Veyyil ( simply mentionable cuz of shankar and GV prakash)
3.Theeyil Viluntha - Godfather
4.Neruppe - VV
5.Un parvaiyil - Smtg2
6.Thadaku thadakku - AAdhi
7.Chittiraiyil - Sivapathigaaram
8.Ragasiyamanathu - Kodampakkam
9.Paartha Mudhal - VV
10.Unnai Kandene - Parijatham

not all the songs are from d correct order. But Munbe Vaa n Uruguthe top the list.

I seriously think none of Vallavan songs are up to the standards. Choreography and Picturisation were advanced but music, nothing so hoo-haa as publicisied. sorry,YSR.

Dear Balaji, an interesting list, not least because a 'gana'number topped your charts!
But me heart breaks to see the omission of "Unnai Saranadainthen" from Thavamai Thavamirundhu, in my humble opinion, one of the most gorgeously melodic numbers to spring from the Kollywood Music Factory this year.In a year of soundtracks crammed with 'item' numbers, this ballad was pure honey dripped onto jaded ear-drums.And shame on the music company that released the soundtrack album sans the 'solo' male version. But to each his own! Happy New Year and keep those reviews coming, dude!

'Ragasiyamadhu Kadhal' - Kodambakkam
'Oru maatram' - 'Naalai'
