Random Thots...

Netflix has announced a $1million prize to the software developer who comes up with a better system of recommending movies to customers, based on the ratings they assigned to movies they have already seen. As earlier reviews here have shown, the movies I like span a wide variety of genres. But Netflix does a pretty good job of recommending other movies for me to see. I’ve seen a few based on their recommendation and haven’t been disappointed. Will be interesting to see what the improved system does(if someone develops it ofcourse!)…

I’m usually a big fan of sitcoms on TV and rarely watch the 1-hour dramas. The only drama I even tried watching was CSI and even then, only because it was episodic rather than a continuing story. For the last 2 weeks, I’ve been watching the new NBC drama Heroes and its impressed me enough to make me look forward to it. It is about a bunch of people who have special abilities (one can see the future, once can fly, one never gets hurt, one can stop time, etc.). An Indian professor’s son is the link between them as he tries to finish his father’s research, which was on people with special powers. The way the drama is shaping up, it looks like the people will come together to save the world from a catastrophe. Its a little too violent and gruesome, especially for a 9pm show but I’m definitely hooked…

One of the books I reviewed on here was Dearly Devoted Dexter. The protagonist in that (and in the first book in that series, Darkly Dreaming Dexter) was a blood splatter specialist in the crime lab, who also moonlighted as a serial killer. That book was violent enough to put me off a little bit but I still think that the concept of having a serial killer as the narrator was an interesting new twist on the serial killer genre. Now Showtime has developed a series Dexter based on that character. I received an email from M80, the company that I think is behind the marketing of Dexter, offering me a sneak peek of the pilot episode. But since I’m not a big fan of watching anything on the computer, I’m gonna wait until Showtime’s free preview weekend next week to check it out…

Emttan Magan is slowly turning into a superhit. With movies like Paarijaatham, Imsai Arasan 23aam Pulikesi and now Emttan Magan becoming huge hits, it looks like family-friendly, clean fare is back in fashion. Good for us...

Heard from back home that Ramya Krishnan is out of Sun TV’s Thanga Vettai. Her replacement is actress Kaniha, who has appeared in movies like Five Star, Edhiri and Autograph. Ramya brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to her job as host while Kaniha in all her roles so far has been the silent, homely type. Wonder how she's doing…

Actor Urvashi is the replacement is it not??

RK adds a lot on the glamour quotient that others can rarely measure up to. And for a show like Thangga Vettai, that is almost certainly an integral element. Homely types should stick to cookery programmes...

dunno how RK was.. But, watched kanika on one of the episodes, she was irritating!

"Uevasi is the new host for "ThangaVetai"..she is also doing the malayalam version as well..Urvasi seems kind of stiff and lacks the charisma that RK had..i had already lost intrest watching it.."

Thats why she was replaced quickly I guess :-) Urvasi was definitely not the right choice. She looked a little weird too on TV, seems like she had lost some weight but looked a little awkward overall. I dont watch this show, but caught a few mins of Kaniha last week. She is probably more lively than her previous on-screen appearances would suggest but doesnt quite cut it, with a monotonous way of presentation

bb, u mite've as well just written abt thanga vettai...no one seems to be interested in any of the other stuff....naanum thaan:-)

rams (adhaan pa, ramya krishnan) ode charm, flair, sexiness and above all, that voice...man, if ever a voice could be called sexy, this it it! (aiyyaiyo, kaalangaarthaalaye vaa...kettudhu po...vayasu kolaaru!) just listen to her say, "Dont worry sweetie, mine's in place!" in Panchathanthiram and u'll nkow what i mean...! rams, we'll miss u!

anon/skanda, looks like urvasi was the host for a couple of episodes only. she might've been a stop-gap host until they found a permanent one. guess thats kaniha now...

ram, based on experience with other posts, that wasn't that big a surprise :)

Actually, since everybody else did talk about Thanga Vettai (and yes, Kaniha is the new host! My parents thought she was actually pretty good!).. Don't think we'll get to see her this weekend as the big Kalaignyar paaraattu vizha is getting air time on Friday (thank goodness, only after Malargal!), Saturday and Sunday..

About family films becoming staple again.. come on, it was bound to (meant to) happen. We were seriously overdosed: Pudhupaettai, Pattiyal, Chithiram Pesudhadi, Kalinga, Thoothukkudi, Naalai, Don Sera, Aachaarya, Kokki, Thalainagaram.. my god, STOP!... One more violent, blood spewing gangster film and we would have lost the entire family contingent to TV permanently. It was about time, Balaji.. It really was about time!

What I'm afraid of is the Deepavali squad.. they are holding their guns high again.. God help us!

About Heroes.. caught a passing glimpse at the show and put it on recording to watch later.. but either the tape ran to the end or Mahalakshmi switched off the VCR during one of the pranks.. didn't get very far (even though it looked interesting!). Frankly don't think that 9pm slot works for me.

I have been meaning to catch heroes, I thought it was on youtube also.

Tamil cinema has always been a pendulum, swinging from 1 extreme to the other. Blame it on flock mentality. 1 guy makes a hit, all other movies follow the trend until the next big hit.

Ramya, inspite of her poor voice modulation was the best choice of the 3.

I caught a glimpse of Heroes as well, it's interesting. I forgot what day it was on though... Monday?? Whatever happened to House MD on tuesdays?? ugh. I had a good line up going. I read that Ghost whisperer started 2 fridays ago.. I cannot miss this friday's ! :P.

As for thanga vettai.. I never liked it. I kinda like kaniga, she's doing good i thought.

Merino, looks like House MD is now on Tuesdays. Krishna and I are major fans.. Unfortunately, sometimes my daughter stays up till 9pm, so some of the content in that show is a definite kid no-no. So, we don't see it as much as we would like to!.. One of the best shows Fox has ever had on its lineup (besides the re-runs of Seinfeld later in the night! ;-)

wow glad to see house fans on here! such a travesty that hugh laurie wasn't nominated for an emmy this past season. i know that the show is taking a break til halloween for the mlb playoffs, i for one can't wait til new episodes are back on the air.

i have been meaning to watch "heroes," especially when i saw an actor of indian descent in the ensemble (and tamil in real life!), but i try to stick to one show a night and "studio 60 on the sunset strip" has my mondays booked.

ps- i don't know if anyone here is a football fan, but "friday night lights" that premiered last night on NBC was one of the most amazing pilots i have ever seen. if you are looking for heart in a show, this cannot be beat, even if you're not big on football. it might make me break my one show a night rule when house comes back. i believe that they are replaying it tonight if anyone is interested.

Balaji-

Thangavettai moved from RK-Urvasi-Kaniha, the last being highly annoying with her trying to kill the tamil pronounciations.

One of my friends told me that although Em Magan is good, the movie reminds you of the Sun Tv kudumba serials with all the elements.

Oh wow! Yey for House fans! =P.

Check out ghost whisperer as well on CBS 8pm on fridays... i caught it in the middle of the season last time, good stuff!

I got Tuesday slot and thursday slot empty cuz House is on hold as per Anjali and Everybody hates chris used to be my thursday line up but the last 2 times, I didnt' see it being aired.. Wednesday is my top model line up..

My latest obssession is Law & Order SVU. Pretty good, except right now USA channel sometimes repeats shows.

Err... I came to comment here again cuz of Ramya Krishnan, I always felt that she was very impatient with the kids and her frustration showed in her voice and facial expressions, she cannot be like that with children, give them a break!

wow, surprised at all the 'House' fans. saw just the previews but have never checked out the show. maybe i will after all these recommendations...

surprised no one's talked about 'gray's anatomy' though. haven't seen that one either but read that they moved it to thursdays since its a breakout hit and it actually beat CSI, the usual winner. so its now the highest rated show on TV...

Off topic - you should watch Bommarillu the telugu hit.

Greys Anatomy is *really* good. The only soap I watch on TV and ha s agood mix of humor, story, romance, nail biting moemnts and the whole package. It used to better when it was lesser known, because oflate there is too much melodrama that takes away the charm that it had in its previous seasons. It caters to the fairer sex though, and men might find it too senti..

House ROCKS. That's one show that has got me hooked from its very first episode. Never mind that am partial to mystery and medicine!

Heroes is awesome. I saw the pilot, and was so thrilled that "madras" was mentioned.. not Chennai, but Madras. What sweet victory that even mainstream american TV stuck to its old name.

You should see House. You should like the female doc/intern :-)

hehe, I didn't mean 'should' as in should-should, just that you would. Talk about some garbled grammar!

grey's anatomy is probably my favorite show on television right now, but i definitely agree with shwetha that it caters to a specific group of people (but it does it well!) house is a close second on my list of favorites, but it caters to a much wider and more diverse audience-- i have found people from my co-workers to my brother in high school that are fans of the show. also house is a more character driven show, with each episode a medical mystery that is solved at the end of the hour, and character plots placed at second importance. grey's is the exact opposite, it uses the medical stories as a backdrop for the drama ensuing on the surgical floor.

definitely check house out, it is easy to understand what is going on even if you tune in halfway through the season, though if you enjoy it as much as i did, you will be scrambling to your nearest video store/library to see past episodes :)

shwetha, too much melodrama and too much senti?! sounds like something i should keep away from :)

anjali, "medical mystery that is solved at the end of the hour" - that line is definitely gonna make me watch 'House' next week. I love mystery tracks that give closure at the end of the hour, which is why i watch CSI pretty regularly.

rads, i admit... "the female doc/intern" swayed my opinion too :)

Imsai Arasan 24-aam Pulikesi replies, "Manguni Paandiyaare, yaar adhu vaithiyarin udhaviyaallar?"

"Raamar Mannaa, avall than andha jil pennmani..."

"Jil-a? Yaen innamum anthapuram sellavillai...ena kaaranam? yaar seidha thaamadham?!"

"indru TV sett-il...mannikavum, mozhi kalappu...tholaikaakshi pettiyil andha pennmanni ungall kannmani!"
