SJS Image Change

S.J.Suryah seems to have finally realized that he needs an image makeover. With New and A Aa , the director anointed himself the king of sleaze in Tamil cinema and garnered the image of a director who primarily used sex and vulgarity to sell his movies. But looks like he now wants to move away from that image.

I did feel that Kalvanin Kaadhali was adversely affected by Surya's image since I think the reviews of the film were prejudiced by his image. The reviewers probably had a preconceived notion about the film (because of its hero) even before they saw it and walked into the theater expecting it to be a sleazefest. The reviews reflected this. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that it was a family film or that it offered clean entertainment. The fact that its hero is a playboy who spends the majority of the film trying to bed the heroine should make it clear that the movie is adult fare. But I feel that the movie wasn't as vulgar as most of the reviews made it out to be. Considering its story, it was rarely exploitative and the vulgarity was limited to double entendre jokes (made mostly by Vivek).

But the reviews probably kept the family audiences away from the film, impacting its performance at the BO. It was still a hit but that was probably because of its low cost and the lack of competition.

So Suryah feels that his image needs some scrubbing and is apparently scripting a film called Pesum Dheivangal, a clean family entertainer. I completely understand his attempt to change his image. But what I found funny was his hope that, with this film, he would get back his Kushi family audience. So Kushi was a family film and had a family audience? That was the film whose story hinged on Vijay staring at Jo's waist and in which a buxom Mumtaj brazenly seduced Vijay while singing Kattipudi Kattipudiaa... and in which Vijay and Vivek indulged in conversations filled with double entendres, right? Just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same film!

I don't think any of Suryah's films has had a family audience. Even Vaali, his best and most successful film so far, was quite adult in both theme and execution. But starting with Kushi, his movies turned vulgar and that's where the problem is. So he doesn't need to necessarily direct a family film. He just needs to direct a non-vulgar(and not necessarily non-adult) film to get an image as a good director.

PS: If he also stopped acting, that would be an added bonus :-)

I need a bonus first from SJS, as you said :-))

Kushi may have Vivek, Vijay's double entendre with Mumtaj..but as i know, the film attracted audience very much eventhough they have things mentioned by you.

And your views about Kalvanin Kadhali is very true. If some other acted in that movie, it may run more than this.

Pesum Theivangal..title itself having much more to attract family audience..lets see, how he making this..

SJS has developed himself a reputation. I seriously doubt that one film would change it. However the news is one that I welcome.

I wish that this new film "Pesum Dheivangal" be a hit because one primary reason. That is,

If this movie fails then SJS will give statements that "family films are no good at BO and I am sticking with what I know best(Sleazy flicks)". I can't take it anymore.

Kushi's family audience-- ha ha ha...
Ennode female fans list madhiri irukku ;) (Seri seri, en kannula yaekkam edhum ille!!)

I've always wondered why it is that Suryah who seems to be following in K. Bhagyaraj's footsteps seems a lot more vulgar than the latter...Bhagyaraj pannaatha "silmisham"-aa...but dunno, somehow there was a kinda good-hearted playfulness in his characterizations...by the end of the movie, you somehow get to sympathize with his character...a case in point being "Chinne Veedu." he's an absolute jerk for the first 70% of the movie but somehow the by the last reel, we're okay with Kalpana singing, "Vellai Manam Ulla Machaan, Velaiyaadi Oanju Vandhaan!"

He would be doing a great service to Tamil cinema if your parting comment becomes true. I would rather live with watching movies directed by him than going through the torture of seeing him on-screen.

Perarasu vs. SJ Suryah.. who is worse on screen?.. or are they really competing to become two of the most hated actors in tamil cinema?..

Take the hits that Perarasu has been getting for sticking in his neck in Thirupathi and you'll begin to wonder about the same!..

Sorry, but I'm beginning to feel like Ramarajan looked like an angel on the silver screen, after looking at Perarasu and Suryah.. :-);-)...

karthik, true. i know it was a huge hit and was liked by many. but i don't think it can be called a family film :)

prasanna, more than 'new' it was in 'a aa' that he really got on my nerves. but though it looks like he is a turnoff for a lot of people i talk to, KK was still a hit. so there must be people who like him or atleast tolerate him :)

you cannot believe this s.j suryah thing whenever he says his movies are for a family audience. cos i remember him coming on pepsi ungal choice and saying that A Aa is a movie that will be enjoyed by people aged 6 to 60. Aaril irunthu arupathu varil intha padathai yenjai pannu vaanga is what he claimed. From this i have a bad feeling that his new movie might juat be in a similar league.
