2007 - The Bottom 10

Let's get the bad out of the way first. Here in reverse order - best of the worst to worst of the worst - are my choices for the 10 worst Tamil movies of 2007...

10. Thavam
This one actually started off differently - even if it did remind us of Punnagai Mannan's opening scene - with Arunkumar and Vandana deciding to die but ending up starting a new life together. But it then piled on coincidences in the name of plot points before turning into another familiar and cliched Kaadhal Koattai clone as it made the hero and heroine look for each other while another girl pined for the hero.

9. Thiru Ranga
This film had some of the most atrocious plot points of the year as a rowdy convinced his friends he was a software engineer and a producer kidnapped a popular actress. The uncharismatic lead pair proved to be incapable of making us overlook the plot points.

8. Urchaagam
Satham Podaathey was a weak thriller and this film ended up looking like Satham Podaathey without the popular stars or great music. The little chance the movie had of engaging us with its thriller theme was killed by the ridiculous screenplay in the second half as gaping holes in logic marked almost every scene and every narrative turn raised a large number of questions that the movie never attempted to answer.

7. Sabari
Every year finds atleast one Vijayakanth film on this list and this year, that dubious honor went to this film, where he played a doctor. Episodic in nature and unsubtle about putting forward his political views and policies, the film atleast proceeded linearly upto a point. But when new characters were introduced, new tracks popped up and both these led to several
unnecessary deaths and an escalation of gore and violence, the movie, that was bad to begin with, became essentially intolerable.

6. Thirumagan
This film's biggest surprise was that S.J.Suryah was not its biggest liability. He was his usual, hamming self but the film's weak story, its huge cast of characters(who simply hung around waiting for the key plot development late in the movie) and the unnecessary sleaze and vulgarity were bigger culprits.

5. Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram
A remake of the Kannada hit, this movie gave 'manipulative sentiments' a whole new meaning. It developed the Kaadhal Koattai storyline(two people looking for each other with lots of near-misses and close calls) between a mother and her son and after a particular plot point, the sentiments became downright tasteless. That, coupled with the listless violence and lack of romance, made the film a disaster.

4. Vegam
A shoddy romance started off this film, which eventually proceeded to shamelessly rip off Cellular as the action moved to Malaysia. S.Ve.Sekhar's son was too plumpy to handle the action hero role and the movie did nothing to make him more tolerable.

3. Thullal
With S.J.Suryah as his role model, director Pravinkanth turned hero in this sleazefest. Banking solely on sex and vulgarity, he fashioned a film that came off as egotistic, cheap and completely distasteful while posing as though it had a message to convey.

2. Vyaabaari
The sci-fi aspects of this film that dealt with cloning were laughable but it was Suryah's irritating performance, combined with lack of logic, abundant sleaze and artificial, misplaced sentiments that made it a truly dreadful motion picture. Suryah's personal motto - and punchline - in the film was 100% Vyaabaari but 100% torture was more like it.

1. Veerasamy
The worst movie in quite a few years, this one was a collage of everything that is wrong with Tamil cinema today with its horrendous acting, bad dialogs, regressive themes, distasteful romance, unfunny comedy, unbelievable stunts and vulgar song sequences. The only positive aspect of the film was that with T.Rajendar both before and behind the camera, it was easy to pinpoint the blame for the two and a half hours of torture inflicted on us.

balaji, better than you than me to have seen all these films, but i do take except to the idea that someone is too plump for action, there are some famous plump martial artists like sammo hung who were just as athletic as slim people.

i think middle-class thamizh people are too obsessed with calling actors/actresses fat as a way of showing off how modern/westernized we are (the same way it is trendy to complain about songs in movies).

Very few ppl can compete with you on making this list. Best movies are easy to point and quite a number would've seen. But worst movies, it takes a Balaji to do this :)
Am surprised "Dharmapuri" didn't make it to the list (last year, was it?). what about that chinni jayanth's movie (Kanal neer, was it?). Anyhow, i haven't seen any of these which would mean I've had a decent 2007 movie year.

Hi Balaji!

I have not seen any of the movies on this list!!

My WORST FILM FOR 2007 List would have (from the movies I have seen):

0. Azhvar
1. Sivaji
2. Pokkiri
3. ATM
4. Kalluri (Sad to mention this one!)

Also, the first of worst for 2008 LIST is ready as soon as they anounced another film by Pee-Pee Vasu with Rajini!!!

i watched veerasami just to laugh at the movie for all its unintended me, the most hilarious scene was the one where he jumps through the roof in a jogging outfit and utters some priceless lines that end in, "naan vasanam pesa aaramichaale manogaraa" i couldnt control my could one be sooooo smug and self-conscious...?! also the cooling-kanaadi-poatta-karadi-kutty (the word kutty obviously not a reference to his girth!) appearance in the songs!

Take a bow, Balaji!! The only movie that I have watched in this list is Urchaagam and I still remember my reaction, after every stupid scene after ridiculous scene. If that movie is at number 8 in the list, I can't believe how bad the other movies would have been, though I have to say that I am dying to watch Veerasami :)

Beware.. One more karadi from Vijay TR family is coming.. Simbhu's brother Kuralasan is making his film debut soon :)

Well said, ram. I have not seen veerasamy but from what I have heard and the stills I have seen, all I can think is - What was TR thinking??? Did he really believe that people would pay money to watch a karadi on screen when they have Discovery channel/Animal Planet at home???

But then my friend mentioned that he might have made the movie knowing that it would flop for some tax benefits or to convert black money... something like what happened in Arunachalam... That makes more sense to me.

anon, that was not a blanket statement on plump people being bad as action heroes. it was specifically about ashwin being too plump to be an action hero. And it was based on this particular movie where he struggled to run, jump over cars, etc. because of his girth :)

bart, 'dharmapuri' was released in 2006 and yes, it did top the 06 'bottom 10' list :) and i didn't get to see 'kaanal neer' :)

apala, "I have not seen any of the movies on this list!!" - all i can say is "Lucky you!". and nice touch placing 'aazhwaar' at #0 :)

ram, i think that was the line where he rhymed viagra with monohara :)

filbert, 'urchaagam' was dumb and ridiculous but the movies that were higher in the list added tastelessness or some other ingredient into the mix so i disliked them even more :)

pushpa, yeah i read about that somewhere too :)

KK, that sounds like the only sane reason for him making a film like 'veerasamy' :)

"something like what happened in 'arunachalam'" - rajni's 'arunachalam'? what's the background story on that?

At 12:21 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

similar to Apala, some of my worst 2007 movies include Sivaji, pokkiri and ATM

At 12:35 PM, Blogger Filbert said...

Illa Balaji, I think what KK was referring to was the sequence of scenes in Arunachalam where Thalaivar would cast Senthil as the hero of the movie he produces, which would let him spend a lot of money in the name of film-making that would eventually help him in spending the money his father had left him.

Hmm you didn't care for urchagam's music eh?

anyways... i agree with all the movies you've got in the list.. i'd like to add one movie call "kaasu irukkanum" with unknown faces, bad acting that resulted in a big fat headache aiyooo kadavule!! i'd give it #1 spot on bad movies... also nee naan nila was stupid.

At 1:30 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

anon, 1 of those made my top-10 list. should be pretty obvious which :)

filbert, duh! my brain must be on holiday today(maybe cos I saw half of 'pazhani' yesterday!). what KK said seems so obvious now. thanks!

merino, i thot the music was good but not enuf to change my opinion of the movie :)

u've seen all these movies and those 2 u mention also?! my condolences :)

At 4:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You watched all those movies? OMG! Thanks to heavens, I didn't see anyone of them... utter waste. But your post is wonderful. :))

At 7:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks for the explanation Filbert! Thats exactly what I meant.

While it is nor surprising that SJ Surya has 3 entries in this list, it is sad to see Meera Jasmine figuring in two of this list. Whither goest thou, lady?

At 11:08 AM, Blogger Raju said...

Balaji, as I said 2 years ago, more than half of the movies were expected to be duds anyway, rite? How about the movies which flattered to deceive (like Azhvar, ATM, Kalloori, etc?)

And it looks like most of the 2008Pongal releases will be in this exclusive list next year..
