Rajni Update

It looks like news about Rajni and Shankar joining hands together for Robot is true after all. According to a lucky Rajni fan who attended the function, Shankar spoke about it at Sivaji's Silver Jubilee celebration function on Friday. Shankar mentioned that he had promised to deliver a bigger hit than Chandramukhi with Sivaji and he had kept that promise. Now he has promised to make Robot an even bigger hit than Sivaji. Write Sujatha, who revealed that he is part of the Robot team, also mentioned that they were looking for a suitable Tamil word to keep as the title.

Btw, I always thought that Rajni had never been associated with Robot before this surprising turn of events. Turns out Rajni and Shankar have discussed this film before. Rajni himself is supposed to have mentioned his conversation with Shankar about Robot at the Boys launch event in 2002.

A new, longer trailer for Sultan is also out(thanks Prabhu, Maverick and anon for pointer) as a Pongal treat for his fans. The animation looks pretty cool. Though there seems to be some stiffness in the animated Rajni's movements and the animation is not as smooth as in Hollywood's computer-animated films, it is way better than the animation in other Indian movies I have seen. More importantly, they've gotten thalaivar's look(like when he glances stylishly at the soldiers surrounding him) and his walk(in slo-mo at the end) down pat. Rahman's background score is pretty cool too.

this sultan looks more like a video game than an animation movie. besides rajni's face is expressionless except for the eyebrow lift. expected more from soundarya.

Balaji-

Yes, according to all kinds of sources, its official that Thalaivar is going to be in Robot, heard that he is going to play a villan role/scientist.
Also, looking forward to his malayalam remake movie to catch a glimpse of him in a brief role, anything to see the Boss on screen.

I just hope that Robot does not insult one's intelligence the way Shankar has been doing in his last few movies. He's been throwing logic out the window and has moved further and further away from any realism. While the subject of "Robot" will definitely lend itself to fantasy and creativity, I just hope that Shankar also keeps in mind that the best sci-fi movies have some sort of logic in their own setting.
even in Planet Shanko, people with multiple personality disorder wont announce a precise date on which they will be holding a press conference in a certain avatar! (Sorry Anniyan fans!). So Shankar, imagination-a avuthu vidunge (looks like Shriya applied that to her costumes at the Sivaji function!)

Balaji, I have to say that the trailer did not make me go 'Wow' :( But I too loved the way Thalaivar's walk is shown in the trailer and that speaks a lot about how Soundharya has understood the pulse of fans. Hopefully the movie has lots & lots of such scenes.

The other movie is intriguing. It is definitely a welcome decision from Thalaivar to act in such cameo roles but like I have said before, P.Vasu donning the director's hat just does not inspire me. But even given all the reservations that I have, you bet I will be watching the movie every single show that it gets screened here :)

raj, considering they're both animated, i think every animation movie will looks like a video game :)

mitr, all kinds of rumors r floating around. but yeah, nice to know there r a few more chances to catch thalaivar on the big screen :)

merino, thanx :)
and no, i havent :)

ram, shankar and sci-fi is not a combination that excites considering his over-ambitious special effects and simplistic stories. but keeping my personal thots aside, he might just be the best director to take a sci-fi film accepted by the masses :)

filbert, i think the fact that it was just 1 major scene rather than a montage of scenes might've been why we didn't go 'Wow!'. also, it said 3-D and i'm not sure if there was some fuzziness cos of that :)

Dear bala, has there ever been a sci-fi tamil movie? As far as memory serves, sci fi scenes may have been in a dream sequence of sorts for a dance & song combo. Any thots on that ...

Hi Balaji:

I am glad finally Rajini decided to act in "Robot" (though as you know that I am a die-hard Kamal-sir fan, I still love Rajini in movies like "Mullum Malarum", "Thillu Mullu", "Thambikku entha Ooru" etc., But the last time I really "ENJOYED" a Rajini movie was "Batcha" (but never thought that after that he would be doing totally non-sense movies (just "whooshing" the air and with his hands & whoosing IN the air won't do for me - SORRY!). I hoped a better movie with Sivaji but it was one of the worst ones from Shankar & Rajini!)

hope he just forgets about "being" a super star and just gives into what the story needs(hopefully Shankar has one this time as this was in the planning for about 5-6 years - and also knowing Kamal was involved in it (he won't commit for an one-line story!!)). That's MY HOPE!

But I am really worried about Pee-Pee Vasu's movie as he IS COMMITTED in murdering every classic in Malayalam!! (Already there are news items talking about a possible "lengthening" of Rajini's role with a heroine etc., to cater(!?!) for Tamil audiences - HOW INSULTING!

The next one I am NOT too keen to watch is "SULTAN" - I LOVE animated movies - but in this trailer Rajini looks "expressionless" plus "very tired"!! (Soundarya says that it would have "punch dialogues" and the usual (refer Sify and all other websites!) - NOW THATS TOTALLY STUPID - to put it mildly!! Why can't we BREAK from all those "cliches" at least in an animated movie - is BEYOND me!!

Hope ROBOT comes out really good - (Kamal would be ready with his "Marmayogi" (7-th Century adventure film for kids with Walt-Disney) to take it on!!!!

SEE YOU THERE, then!!! (Just kidding!!)
