Superstars with Simran - Episode 7
Caught up with Superstars on Sun TV yesterday after a couple of weeks. I'm not sure if there are official statistics out there for how the program is doing but they must be doing pretty bad if they have to resort to stunts like what they had yesterday, to boost viewership. That stunt, combined with some atrocious new rules and mostly untalented participants, is making me lose interest in the show rather fast.
The highlight of yesterday's episode, if one were to go by all those previews that focused solely on it, was an on-camera fight between Simran and Vijay Adhiraj over his comments about her judgement on some earlier participants. Simran launched into an interrogation of Vijay as soon as she came on-stage, questioning his credentials to judge her. At one point, both Simran and Vijay retreated to their respective caravans, the seriousness of the situation explained by one of those dramatic, somber voice-overs that usually announce catastrophes like earthquakes and tsunamis. The producer, with camera in tow, worked with both of them to get them to continue the show and all was well in the world again. It was rather funny when Simran, who made it a point to launch her tirade on-stage rather than backstage, kept asking the camera to be shut off. But considering that the whole thing was an act, she put on a really good show and was very convincing. Her entreaties to turn the camera off were sincere and she was almost in tears at one point. It was a great performance that all those aspiring actresses on the show can look up to!
A 'new' part was added to the show starting yesterday. The members of the studio audience were given cards with red on one side and green on the other and as each participant came on stage, they showed the green or red side indicating a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' (in Vijay's words, they were voicing their opinion on the participant "thaerumaa thaeraadhaa"). I can't imagine anything else that could be more insulting to the participants. In addition to demonstrating their talent on TV, being judged by Simran and waiting to see if they make it to the next stage, they now have to endure being rated on their looks by some random viewers. Great!
The most disappointing part of the show so far has been the quality of the participants. There have been a few good participants but for the most part, they have been uninspired and unexciting. Most surprising is the apparent lack of practice from some contestants. When they get just a single shot at proving themselves, why they don't practice and put their best foot forward is beyond me. Also surprising is the complete absence of discernible talent in some others. If these were the people selected from the initial pool of 1000 contestants, one shudders to think of the talents exhibited by those eliminated in the initial screening!

Deivame, unga porumaikku oru ellaye kedayadha? Not just "Inba", "Vaitheeswaran" you could endure this too...
Frankly Sun TV is the worst channel one can watch half baked programs to the core. There is a new channel in town called world movies from UTV, great movies with subtitles, nice one.
Of subject read Pyramid Saimira and Anil Ambani have bought chains of 2nd grade theatres in US, more chances of catching Indian movies nearer to your locations in future.

This show is thought of and executed in a hurry after Vijay TV announced a show called 'Heroes'. I don't know what happened to that Vijay TV show, I think they are still audtioning people.
The only time I saw this show I was yawning and said to myself not watching this crap again. I can't stand Vijay Adiraj, he's so annoying. *rolls my eye about simran*
lol.
i am sick of these "stunts." i read on rediff about malaika (chaiyya chaiyya girl) and arbaaz "splitting up" and how that was a stunt to promote some new product...
pappuvegalai-naa cooker-a maathunge, vendhum vegama irukara saapada kudukaathenge! komattudhu!
"therumaa...theraadhaa...?" - am glad somebody like ragava lawrence didnt participate in this; we might've lost a terrific dancer based on this!
and in general, its so unfair to the participants...like nipping their confidence in the bud and then asking them to carry on gamely...
The reality shows are a total waste of time. They have to resort to such antics to keep the show running. There is nothing "Real" about these reality shows.
I was seeing the ad for the show and as you said Simran did look convincing.
I got to watch the cheap stunt too and you are right the performance was very convincing. In fact Simran looked upset even after the deal was brokered. The quality of programs in Sun TV has gone from bad to worse. I am wondering if it's time to switch to Vijay TV.
I saw this program and thought I will do a post. Now I know why I didn't do it. I can never make it this funny!!
I was laughing out loud reading your post! The only good thing that came out of this stupid stunt was your post!! :-)
bart, this was atleast shorter than those 2 movies :)
KP, didn't read that news about pyramid and anil ambani buying up theaters. hope they got some good ones or are atleast planning to remodel them. the theaters where they show tamil films here could surely use an upgrade :)
suresh, so sun tv actually beat vijay tv to it this time? :)
merino, wouldn't go as far as 'annoying' but he should cut down on his caffeine :)
ram, exactly! while simran atleast backs up her judgement with comments, its insulting to watch random people rate u on ur suitability!
giri, this one was scripted for sure :)
girish, yeah i liked the way she brought it up later when vijay asked if he could comment on one of the participants :)
yaadayaada, thanx! but would've loved to see ur take on it too :)
if this is what our indians can come up with for a reality show, then its a real big embarrassment!
Well, any comments on April 27, 2008, episode of an eunuch act?!
Hey.. thanks for ur article, Balaji..
Sun TV's programs has really become soo worse, that you won't even like to expect more from them.. they're trying to copy everything e.g. concepts of vijay tv in order to improve their market rate. But nothing helped recently..Besides.. their serials are also aweful. There's one typical woman who fights again her husband and his fellows .. maybe there's one more woman who's the villain. So SunTv has developped itself to carry out nearly 10 to 15 serials with just THIS concept..
I think it's really time to switch to Vijay TV nowadays..There's much more quality over there. If someone really wants to watch sth worthy, pls watch Neeya Naana. I was really thrilled to watch its episodes. Gopinath, anchor of Neeya Naana-debate show on Vijay TV, is a very talented and genuine person who handles the subjects very clear!! Worth to watch out for...
Simran - Vijay Adhiraj:
These kind of stunts are done in order to gain attention which just makes me feel sad about both.. Before, there was just a bit of respect left.. But now it's totally gone.
