2 Questions

1. Saw the Amitabh-Rani-Salman-John Abraham starrer Baabul over the weekend. The title song below gives us glimpses of a bride going through the wedding rituals? She looks a lot like Shreya to me. Its been awhile since I saw Sivaji and so I think I'm past the every-actress-looks-like-Shreya effect :) So, is this really Shreya?

2. Got this one from a reader in an email and since I couldn't get it, I thought I'd pass it along since I know there are some real trivia buffs among the readers:
I am hoping that you will be able to identify the name of a movie that I saw in Chennai in the late 70s. The movie was about the struggle of a father-in-law trying to comply with tradition in dealing with his daughter-in-law (who lost her husband early in the marriage). The movie was black and white, and starred Kamal Hassan, who was trying to romance the widow. I think it was directed by K. Balachander. I am not sure if the actress was Shoba.

THe movie sounds like Sippikul Muthu, a Telugu movie dubbed into Tamil, the widow is Radhika. Kamal's voice, distractingly, was dubbed by SPB.

Is it the dubbed version of Swathi muthyam?

1) To me too she looks like Shreya, though Shreya is not part of the cast.. Not sure though.
2) After some extensive research, found that the movie that is being talked about is "Oru veedu Oru Ulagam" directed by Durai (known more for his "Pasi"). The movie stars Shobha, Major Sunderrajan and Srikanth. No Kamal or Balachander :)
Thanks for letting me find abt this movie that was unknown to me till now.

The movie that I can think of which meets most of the criteria mentioned is "Nizhal Nijamagirathu":
- Kamal
- Shobha
- K Balachander
- Late 70's movie.
I'm not sure abt the Father-in-law/ Widow remarriage theme, though !!!

anon/RS, 'sippikkul muthu' doesn't fit the time period(late 70s) or the B&W. so probably not :)

bart, wow! haven't heard of that movie either. will pass it along :)

megan, thanx for the confirmation :) i knew she came in a few ads. but was she ever a model waiting for a breakthrough?

anon, that was one of my guesses too. and i rejected it cos of the theme :)

inkblot, my thots exactly :)

anon, thanx :)

merino, i'm guessing the movie u're talking about it 'aboorva ragangal'. the other chick was srividya's daughter and the older dude there was kamal's dad, making it one complicated relationship :)

glass, 'avargal' was sujatha and so i think she was talking about 'aboorva ragangal'. and yeah, MM is a good one from that combo :)

"Durai one of the early-70s new wave film-makers in Tamizh (along with Bharatiraaja, Rudriah and Mahendran) made "Oru Veedu Oru Ulagam" (one house, one world) around 1980. In the movie Shobha (who won the National Best Actress award for her work in Pasi (Hunger)) is the daughter of a vaidika brahmana (a priest) married into a less orthodox family. When her husband dies in an accident Shobha's father insists on subjecting her to every ritual (breaking her bangles, removing her manglasutra, wiping off the bindi) but when it comes to the ultimate indignity (tonsure) the father in law steps in (after having sat through quietly thus far) takes her away. Shobha recovers from the tragedy and gets back to her studies at college... "

this is definately shreya. she has long been trying to find footing in bollywood. she finally managed to in mahesh bhatt's awarapan.

yeah, sounds like OVOU, which itself was kind of inspired from Vamsa Vriksha(Kannada), which though stayed away from the various sentiment-infested tamil version and focussed on deeper issues.

Haha well like anon mentioned, she could have been trying to find her footing in bollywood back then. Right now, it looks like she does have some people noticing her. The south indian industry may be laughing at her for her INA act but she's still holding some bollywood films with a few big names involved in each of them, plus she bagged Deepa Mehta's film and has one more English movie starring alongside the dude from desperate housewives. i guess we've got to wait and see what she has got to offer and if she is going to make all those who said she couldn't emote scenes very well, eat their words out.
