Thanks Again!

Friday, March 7, was this blog's 3-year anniversary, with my first post being recorded on the rather unremarkable date of March 7, 2005. I definitely didn't think I'd be blogging for 3 years when I started blogging. After all, I started this blog simply because everybody else seemed to be doing it and not because I possessed some extraordinary, useful knowledge that I just had to share with the rest of the world! So I admit with no hesitation whatsoever that hitting this 3-year mark is solely because of you readers. Even with my love of movies(Tamil, in particular) and love of writing, its doubtful if I'd have continued blogging for 3 years without the enthusiastic comments, interesting discussions, entertaining arguments and fun trivia. And its been a lot of fun. So once again, a big 'Thank You' for visiting inspite of the site's staunch policy to focus on the trivial and the frivolous.

Now, a confession. I'm a lot less confident about this blog seeing its next anniversary than I was on the same date last year. And that's because I've noticed less enthusiasm on my part when it comes to this blog. Nothing much has changed on the personal front. My wife is still as opposed to this blog(though, in her defense, her opposition is to me spending too much time on the computer and not to the blog per se), my daughter is still as attention-demanding and my son is still as mischievous as last year. I do have a new job but since I do most of my blogging at night, that doesn't have much of an effect. So I think the only thing that's leading to this dwindling enthusiasm is a general lack of excitement about Tamil cinema, which clearly is the primary subject of this blog. And based on the recent dip in hits and fall in comments, I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone in feeling this way.

2007 wasn't exactly a stellar year for Tamil cinema but by this time last year, we'd already had a commercial superhit in Pokkiri, an excellent, feel-good charmer in Mozhi and a rural, near-classic in Paruthi Veeran. Compared to that, it has been real slim pickings so far this year with Anjaathey, Pirivom Sandhippom and Pudichirukku, the three best movies so far this year, definitely not in the same league as those movies, either in quality or in box-office impact. A year ago, there was a lot of excitement in the air about upcoming releases too, with Sivaji leading the pack and Billa, Dasaavathaaram and Bheema(we thought those would be releasing last year too, right?) right behind. But barring Dasaavathaaram and Kuselan, I'm not excited as much about the roster this year and even with those two films, Dasaavathaaram hype hasn't picked up yet while the excitement about Kuselan is tempered by the fact that it is being helmed by P.Vasu. I usually write a 'Coming Soon' post about movies I'm excited about but my last such post was more than a month ago for Indralogathil Na. Azhagappan(we all know how that film turned out!) and that's a pretty good indication of my excitement level so far this year.

I love Tamil movies and I love writing about them. So I'm pretty sure that all it's gonna take to get my excitement level back up again is a couple of really good movies. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later. And I'm sure you do too...

i've said it before but i do wish you'd resume writing about old films. there are many "lesser known" movies of good quality coming out on dvd, and having a sense of the past might alleviate the boredom of teh disposable present...

First, congratulations on lasting this long! Hope the current mood changes and that the blog shall log some more years...
Am not very surprised with the lack of enthu but disappointed though that there wouldn't be many blogs to read regularly..
But it is not just you - almost all the old-timers (many of them older than you :) ) have reduced their blogging considerably - Lazygeek for one.
Now we have to wait for something to happen... (sultan and even kuselan are not enticing yet. Dasavatharam - yes, Kuruvi - yes (to a lesser extent), Kandasamy - maybe yes). I know its not dropping dead yet, but shall wait for bb to buzz actively again.

Hey balaji, there are so many good movies coming up these year, Rajini's "Kuselan", vijay's "kuruvi", gautham menon's "ayiram varanam", Kamal's "dasavatharan", Bala's "Naan Kadavul",, Ajith's "Eagan" are some of the really big movies which i'm looking forward too..The second half of the year would sure rock with some great moviee.

I'm also damm disspointed with ther releases so far. After "shivaji", there were not really any movies worth talking bout, i hope things change after this..

so Balaji, please do not stop Blogging, do not write bout tamil cinema mybe other stuffs tat are intresting. mybe in the time being u can review more hindi and hollywood to fill up the gap..how bout that? Anyhow dunt stop Blogging..

Congrats mate, once again!

It's a pity you've only mentioned two films...

looking at the other posts, agreeing with Naan Kadavul, Vaaranam Aayiram, Kanthaswamy, guyz watch out for

Nishikanth Kamath's "Endrendum Punnagai" with Maddy and Shruti Haasan"

:)

anon, that's something I'd luv to do. the stores here aren't particularly good when it comes to old movies and I Just haven't gotten around to renting any out yet. I do have an old classic on my netflix queue. but with all these oscar winners coming out now, its still languishing at the end of the queue :)

bart, thanx :)

among other upcoming releases, i'd probably place 'kuruvi' and 'yaaradi nee mohini' at the top of my list :) 'kandasamy' and 'sultan' r just too far away for me to drum up much excitement :)

San, thats true. rajni movies still releasing is one good catalyst for this blog :)

Manivannan, can't guarantee that'll happen soon. an easier option might be for u to just stop visiting/reading :)

skanda, yeah, all those movies do have something going for them. my excitement level will probably go up as the release date nears :)

ink blot, nice title there. thanx :)

INA will be 1 of 4 reviews this week for sure :)

prin, thanx :)

yes i agree its a pity that i've mentioned only 2 films! first time i'm hearing of 'endrendrum punnagai' i think. but interesting cast for sure :)

Balaji, I can be accused of being one of the many who hasn't commented on this blog as often as I used to. Again, that can seriously be attributed to the dearth of interesting Tamil cinema related news, movies and topics since '07 and now '08.

Regardless, tamil cinema-ukku ups and downs enna pudhusaa? Idhukellam enthusiasm-a vittu kodukkalaama?..

But just as you are sitting here lamenting on the sad state of affairs, I read this news this morning and thought, wow, someone has been reading Balaji's mind! :-) ;-)

Optimism, my dear friend, Optimism! :-) ;-) You can't be a tamil cinema buff without it!..

Congrats on 3 wonderful years and many many more to come! :-)

Balaji, lack of good Tamil films or not, all of your entries are truly enjoyable and I encourage you to keep writing. From my own experience it's always the years of no hype and buzz that deliver some true gems. Hopefully 2008 is no different. 2007 I thought was a decent year, yielding propbably one of the most heartbreaking and important films in years, "Katradhu Thamizh". Look foward to reading more great material from you.

Balaji, good Tamil films or not, your entries have always been a pleasure to read so I encourage you to continue writing. It's from my own experience that I discovered that years of dormancy, without buzz or hype, always yield some true gems so hopefully 2008 is no different. 2007 I thought was pretty fruitful year and yield probably one of the most heartbreaking and important films of the past few years, "Katradhu Thamizh". Looking to all future entries Balaji, another 3 years for sure.

OMG....I am extremely sorry. I sincerely meant " please do NOT stop blogging".

Even if I want someone to stop blogging, I wouldn't have said that cos it is rude and insensitive to other person's feelings. I am sorry BB...it is a mistake.

I've been reading your blog for a while and I would never say that.

My sincere apologies again BB. I hope you accept it.

I think I have no need to again state what others have said, your blog is truly a pleasure to read and I hope that you don't hang up your boots any time soon.

We have had worse years than this in the past and still moved on, it is just a matter of time before all the good movies start showing up and as Sandhya said a little bit of optimism is definitely required in situations like these.

Grats on the 3 years and here's hoping more follow. :)

Balaji, I am one of those lazy people who only reads but never comments. I must tell you that I have been following bbreviews since 2000 when I came to this country. And I think you must also have started your review page around that time. I enjoyed reading your reviews and now your blog. Your threat to stop blogging has finally made me to add a comment here!! I regularly check your blog at least 3 to 4 times a week.

I must tell you I love your reviews more than brangan's. I am saying this becos you had mentioned somewhere that you like his reviews and also I know his blog is very popular. Your english is more simple and lucid and your star rating easily tells how good a movie is. In fact, many times when I want to select one of the older movies, I frequently go to your archives page and pick a movie from there based on rating.

So please, please, please don't stop blogging. I have an idea, maybe you can blog on cooking when there are no movies to write about, I love food blogs ;-). So you could have a category "bb's favorite samaiyal". That way your wife will also let you blog. What say????

-Padma.

Actually I liked your tamil cinema reviews but more importantly i would like to add that your blog on the "fly on jamoon at dosa place" was the best because it was heated up discussion (from others) which i loved

I thought you could write more on the things happening here too (where there is agreement and disagreement among readers) !! it was very nice to paricipate in that review.

I'm not saying i want more flies in the jamoon, but any other review which can heat up discussion among people will be a good one !!

It was fun to read

gayatri, long time no see. but glad to see u still do visit :)thanx!

balaji, thanx :) this was intended to be more about the lack of excitement in tamil cinema rather than any particular plans to stop blogging :)

padma, glad u finally decided to post a comment! appreciate the nice words and glad i'm able to help u pick some movies :)

blog on cooking... hmmm... with neither me nor the wife being particular fans of cooking, thats going to be a tough one :)

anon, will keep my eyes open for more like that :)

Hey.. i have been reading your blog regularly. Good work. Maybe, if there aren't good movies coming then why don't you try reviews of them in a humorous way rather :)

And reader's like us would also get a taste of diffrent review from you as well....
