Tamil Cinema Music in 2007

Its the beginning of the new year and so its time for the year-end lists and recaps. This post, which lists my favorite songs of 2007, kicks off the recaps on this blog.

While 10 is the most popular number when it comes to lists, it is too restrictive when it comes to songs. So, in the last 2 years, I presented the best 32 songs of the year as a 2-CD compilation, along with a runner-up CD with songs that didn't quite make the cut for the 2 CDs but were definitely listenable nevertheless. But 2007 was a particularly good year for Tamil cinema music and I found that even 32 wasn't enough to cover all my favorites of the year. So here are 48 songs for a 3-CD compilation of the best of Tamil cinema music in 2007.

The sheer number of the songs shows your tolerance.

Why is "Maduraikku Pogathadi" not in the list?

At 11:57 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

yasodha, tolerance? not really. i enjoy listening to every one of these songs.

as for 'maduraikku pogadhadi', i thot it was a kinda generic folk song. i just liked 'valayapatti' better :)

well i don't mean that u put up with the songs. i know that u actually like them.

What i mean is your way of noticing the shortcomings of the songs but putting those aside and enjoying their + points.

Same with the movies you review. Knowing TR with all his eccentricies, you can sit and endure a full 2 or 3+ hrs on something which is not going to instruct, elevate or even amuse you.

But why stay in the simon and garfunkel era when it is with endlish alone? Surely you aren't the closed-mind type of person and enjoy new things in entertainment, don't u? so give that also a shot.

Why not a top 20 on all-time favs?

You are a specialist in listings.

Good review, but being an ARR fan i think all songs of ATM should be on it. I think though, you left out Kalloori , I really liked the movie and the song June-July is stuck in my head eversince !

Great list, Balaji, and like you mentioned 2007 had more than its share of hummable songs. Some of the songs that I liked, but didn't make your list:

Nee mutham onru koduthal - Pokkiri (even though the starting seems lifted from the old Aradhana song... Mere sapnon ki raani)
Thoduven thoduven - Deepavali
Pogadhe - Deepavali
Kannaal pesum pennae - Mozhi
Oh Nenje - Sivi
Valayal karangalai - Thottal poo malarum
Nee Marilyn Monroe - ATM
Sanjaram seyyum - Kannamoochi Yenada
Megam megam - Kann. Yenada
Un arugil varugayil - Kalloori
Sariya idhu thavara - Kalloori
Kalloori Theme music - Kalloori
Yen enakku mayakkam - Naan avan illai

I'm sure i'm missing a few more.. but thats just off the top of my head.

the one thing i noticed from songs this year is the popularity of some very sweet melodies...if i had to single out one song that i listened to the most in 2007, it is "kaatrin mozhi." the tune and the wonderfully poetic lyrics combine to create magic. even the picturization (with jo appreciating the "music" in small things like the rhythm of cutting vegetables, the gentle dance of the bell while seeing her paati pray, etc) was amazing...

yasodha, its just lack of time that contributes to my not listening to english songs. defly not close-minded.

and picking out 20 all-time fav songs will be too difficult, even with my penchant for lists. but i do know what will be #1 on that list - 'andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu...' :)

anu, i accept to not hearing 'kalloori' songs too many times. but do plan to after ur recommendation :)

prin, i like all those songs except for the 1 from 'rameswaram'. none of the songs impressed me when seeing the movie. but i will and try to listen to the album since its got some nice reviews :)

arun, there r songs in ur list i have heard but didn't like too much but there r so some i haven't heard many times. so thanx :)

skanda, the order may be different('mozhi' is #1 for me) but my list will look pretty close to urs :)

anon, i'd say there r about 10 songs in that list that i'd classify as good rather than best. but i really think the rest will go on to my 'best' list :)

ram, u took the words right out of my typing (next post paathapuram puriyum!) :)

mitr, u're welcome :)

anon, i think there was 1 song from 'naan avanillai' that was on sun tv's top 10. not sure if it was 'yen enakku' but i didn't like it too much :)
