very nice review of periyar. i like the point u made abt the difference between great biographies and good biographies. the other point I'd like to make is that a biography should go beyond reverence and be willing to analyze its subject. A human being's fallibility holds more fascination in fiction than perfection. from the initial response to "periyar" (unseen by me, till now) i see the whole film as an effort to eulogize its hero. i am a wee bit skeptical of the political funding for the movie which might've restricted the director from being too unbiased. from what i've read of periyar, there are several facets of him that i whole-heartedly admire but I would like to see him more as a human than as a hero. But I am looking fwd to watching Gnana Rajasekaran's & Satyaraj's interpretation of Periyar.

am so glad to read the +ve comments on Satyaraj's acting. he, like parthiban, is not just a wasted actor but a terribly misused actor. Am glad he's got his chance to portray his real-life hero...

will look fwd to watching periyar...with a few reservations :-)

Helllo Balaji,
I've come too know from Karthik that Dombivili Fast(Which's being remade in Tamil as Evano oruvan.)is 'inspired' by an Engilsh film Falling down.
Read his review here:

As for the English film, here's the plot summary:

Saw the movie. I felt it tried to capture too many things that Periyar tried in his lifetime. Also as you rightly mentioned, it was biased to his views. Somewhere the importance of other characters, who in their own right might've been heroes too, were diminished and became props without much force.
But overall a good effort. The songs though good, could've been avoided and one or two used in background of events would've sufficed the movie.

Ganesh and Balaji,

Evano Oruvan seems like it has things to become medium budget hit. Black God Contractor (Karuppusamy Kuthagaitharar) is a case point. if properly and crisply narrated this movie has in it to become a hit.

What needs to be seen is how it has been tamilized by the marathi director and Madhavan.

Let us wait and see.
