Happy Birthday Kamal!

I may be a Rajni fan but I’m also definitely a Kamal admirer. In fact, if not for my cousin sister, I might’ve well been a Kamal fan today! She was(and is) one of the most avid Kamal fans I’ve known and it was primarily to needle her that I joined the opposite camp and became a Rajni fan. And the rest, as they say, is history…

But the movie buff in me has always liked Kamal. I’ve taken part in many of the Rajni vs Kamal arguments in my school days but at the same time, I was always first in line when a Kamal movie opened. I look forward to all his movies and have rarely been disappointed with what he delivered. I’m amazed at his talent and his dedication to his craft. And most of all, I’m thankful for his incessant efforts to raise Tamil cinema to the next level.

Happy Birthday Kamal!

Happy Birthday, Kamal Sir! Kamal Hassan is one actor whose contributions to Tamizh Cinema as an art form surpass that of pretty much every other actor except the late thespian Sivaji...

one of our finest, most versatile actors...Kamal has been the actor whom I've admired and adored the most (by miles!) as I've matured as a movie goer...

on his b'day, here's a short list of my fav Kamal "moments"...in rough chronological order:

1. his last scene in Avargall

2. the famous "aatha aadu valathuchu" scene from 16 Vayathinile...

3. the b'day sequence in Raja Paarvai

4. sippi irukkudhu from V N Sivappu...

5. moondram pirai...last scene, of course!

6. naadha vinodhangall from Salangai Oli

7. oh maria from Saagar...

8. the "pon sirippu" scene from punnagai mannan

9. Mera Beta Aap Ka Beta...My son is your son....Suryavuka?

10. Udhayamurthy porum...pilla ungelode irukatum

11. the police station scene in Chanakyan (Malayalam)

12. muttaal thaan mudhalali...mutaal thaan...

13. "proapper paalakad alla...thotteduthu oru kuk graamam!"

14. aiyya naan indha ooruku edhaachu nalladhu seyven yaa...

15. kaveri enge?

16. shoot me now and its a bloody order...

17. ipdi thaan podhupani thura, poakkuvarathu thura nidhi minsaaram unavu sugaatharam kalvi kaaval thozil-nu elaa thuraiyilaum lanjam vaangi vaangi...

18. 'i am not a man like this, sir...'

19. ooooom enum pranava mandhirathai...sivan bubble laam oodhadhu sammandham!

20. a ars...u are a good man...so are u...i know...

He is a very highly over rated and over acting actor. He is also very insecure about his co-artist and he never ever gives them the breathing space that Shivaji gave his co-actors.

Agreed he did occasionally shine, but they were always after a big flop(Main reason being Kamal overhyping the movie).

I loved Anbe shivam,Mahanadi and Micheal Madhana Kamaraj.

Happy B-Day Kamal.....

but it is very true bout his insecurity bout his co-artists...he's one of those lime light stealers and never gives credit to co artists like madhavan in anbe sivam.....all posters had kamal on them

That Kamal suffers the same fate as gifted craftsmen is true...commercial pressure, fan(atic)s, aesthetics and a genuine commitment to deliver a polished work of the highest order with available resources.

That is an unenviable task given the limitations of Kollywood, or even Indian cinema.

It is undoubted that he tries - sometime too hard - and challenges the perimeters that define conventional Indian cinema; some love it and some loathe it.

In any respect, his dedication to cinema should be appreciated and deservingly so.

Get a break guys. While your comments that he does not give space to co-artists is agreed to a good extent, this is his B'day wish post. Everyone including Superstar has their darker side (yester year Superstar was no
different than Kamal.

It's not good to be talking bad of someone (even though he is) on his B'day.

I wish he would back off on the image transformation stuff. When was the last time we saw Kamal without a lot of fancy make-up, etc.? VV was one, maybe Panchatantram before that. Sometimes we just want to see Kamal himself on screen, not Kamal covered in latex and makeup and wigs. Its good that he's trying interesting stuff, but surely there's a film that will involve his natural talents.

Oh.. yaaraiyo veruppetha neenga rajini fan aaneengala? mmm.. idhellam too much reason.. I remember one of my cousins used to support some 'dark horse' during any tennis game, against the popular wish, to keep the match alive..

And, to those who wrote about Kamal being insecure with his co-artists.... Think about Nasser, Nagesh, Madhavan, even Sivaji and Arjun.. Their best performances have come in their films with Kamal, and Kamal has even allowed their talent to bloom to full extent..

Yeah, but you have had ample time to rethink your decision since then :-))
Looks like there is still a kid in Balaji who come alive upon seeing Rajni films :-)

In general Kamal gives himself a lot of screen time, sometimes to the detriment of the film (Anbe Sivam) and Virumaandi should not have had those prison riot scenes. But in that film Napoleon and Pasupathi were terrific.
