Super 'Super 10'

Tamil movies, with their several cliches, hero worship, exaggerated sentiments and gravity-defying stunts, are quite ripe for satire. But the opportunity has rarely been exploited, whether within or outside the field. In Kodambakkam, Satyaraj is the lone actor keeping the 'spoof genre' alive, with movies like Adithadi and Mahaanadigan containing some hilarious sequences that poked fun at other films. But lately, spoofing has come down to simply recreating sequences from other popular movies. The assumption is that seeing Satyaraj or Vivek play characters from other movies is enough to make us laugh. No further thought goes into the segments.

There used to be a TV program (Saraswathi Sabatham or something like that) on Doordarshan a long time ago. It was the first, full-length spoof of Tamil cinema I remember seeing. It had its own, suitably ridiculous storyline and rather than spoofing specific movies, it spoofed the Tamil cinema scene in general. So it had scenes like the hero growing an impossibly long beard(to signify kaadhal tholvi) in the few minutes it took to read a letter from his lover and bad guys willingly inserting their heads into hanging tires and other props during fight sequences. It was a lot of fun and laughs were easy to come by. I remember it ending in a rather hurried fashion though I do not remember why.

While not as clever or original as that program, Sun TV’s Super-10 seems like a legitimate successor. The program spoofs a different movie each week while presenting the week's top 10 songs. While the spoof itself is more of a filler for the program’s real purpose, listing the songs, I’ve been watching the program for the spoof rather than the songs (kinda like reading Playboy for the articles?!). The program understands the concept of spoofing in that it borrows the outline of a story from a popular movie but instead of restaging the same story, it modifies it in outrageous ways. So it is both clever and funny.

For instance, in their take on Sethu last week, ‘Sethu’ kidnaps ‘Abitha’ and takes her to a dilapidated house, but then screams at her for spending all his money on food! A crying ‘Abitha’ buries her head between her knees sorrowfully but when ‘Sethu’ lifts her head, she is actually eating an apple! She then hits ‘Sethu’ on the head with the apple, which is how he ends up in a mental institution!

And in the Padaiyappa spoof, ‘Sivaji’ hugs the pillar at his house and refuses to let go even as ‘Rajni’ pulls him back. But when the camera pulls back, we see that ‘Sivaji’ is actually holding on to a maid’s hands on the other side. And in the famous scene where ‘Rajni’ visits ‘Ramya Krishnan’, ‘Rajni’ throws his towel up to pull down the swing, only to have pieces of cement and paint rain down on him from the ceiling!

Indian, Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu and Gauravam were some other movies spoofed on the program in recent weeks. Hilarious stuff! Now, if the guys behind Super-10 script a movie starring Satyaraj, that might be something to look forward to…

My friend gave me clippings from this show(or sometjing very very similar). I got around to watch these recently.

It had spoofs of Red, Thottijaya(was named Vettijaya), Suryavamsam and 7/G Rainbow Colony(This had Santhanam in the lead).

These were hilarious.

Nice post, Balaji.

Balaji,

I heard from my dad about the Ghajini spoof. In this one, Surya goes to a hotel and eats a whole lot and is getting ready to leave when the server comes to him and says "Enge pore?" and Surya gives a blank stare..

Server: Idhukkelaam evan kaasu koduppaan?..

Surya: Yedhukku (having forgotten everything!)

Server: Ippadi pannuve-nu ennakku theriyum.. Idho paaru (and shows him a set of polaroid snaps).. 2 Idli, 1 Dosai, 1 Upma.. idhu ellam sapittirukke.. Mudhal-la bill-a kattittu pO..

I just started laughing so hard just as my dad was narrating this to me.. can only imagine how funny the real thing was!..

Balaji,
Saraswathiyin Sabadham was by Cho :-) It was a full length spoof on cinema. Hilarious one!

And Vijay TV has lollu sabha whose spoof is 100 times better than Sun TV Top 10. And they have a kadavul paadhi/mirugam paadhi where they review the movies in a hilarious way. When it comes to comedy, Vijay TV is miles ahead when compared to other Tamil channels :-)

Prasanna,
His name is Santhanam. He acted in Sachein too!

Yeah. I like Vijay TV's 'Lollu Sabha' spoof better than the Sun TV's song countdown programme. Santhanam is hilarious and so are the other actors there. 7GRC was one of their best works and Santhanam was just too good in mimicking the hero's expressions.

Yeah, I loved the 'Super 10' episodes the first few times I saw it. After that, a few were just ok, and I stopped watching. What time/day does 'Lollu Sabha' play? May try and catch it.

The problem with most spoofs is that they get tiring after 1/2 hour or so. That's what was so great about 'Saraswathiyin S'. Just the right amount of time. Wonder if they ever released it on video/DVD?!

I also enjoy this show. Master Ganesh and Aarthy are pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't get Star Vijay and hence I don't get an opportunity to watch Lollu Sabha.

I love this show as well. The actors seem to play the roles with glee. once when either master ganesh or the other guy was acting as karthik, someone would say " nee vaayile irrukira yechiye thupittu pesu".

They even go as far as to imitate the sarath kumar's "dance" moves. and we all know that is quite a task indeed.

balaji,

This show is indeed funny. I watched spoof of ejamaan and was in stitches.

It had Napolean saying " eppodhumey naan thaan mudhalla irukanum".

And his sidekick would say " naan adhuku oru pakuvam sollurean, rathiri saapaatukku appuram rendu vazha pazham saapita naalaikku kaalailey neenga thaan mudhale irupeenga."

I don't know who comes up with stuff like this but its truly hilarious.

No matter how hard I try to hate (& thus, not see) the program, every time I watch it, I end up having 1 hour of sumptuous laughter. BTW, the Playboy analogy was very naughty but very apt :)

yeah, i agree with the folks who say that lollu sabha is insanely hilarious! Orkut has a community called "lollu sabha rasigar mandram" and I regularly download videos from there...youtube.com also returns a few videos if you search for "Lollu"
the guys are hilarious...
7/g orambo colony was awesome, so was budhan's "thoora paarvai" an imitation of madhan's "thirai paarvai"
u got to check out the spoofs of arunachalam, mudhal mariyadhai and duet. the guys who do the rajni (i think his name's jeeva) and sivaji/prabhu (swaminathan) impressions are terrific! esp. in mudhal mariyadhai, jeeva is awesome as veerachamy (the enakkoru unma therinjaaganum saami guy).

Havent watched Vijay's program, but Sun TV's super 10 is something I religiously watch during my India vacations. Talking of spoofs, have you guys watched the Titanic spoof in tamil? the actors are the same and the movie is cut to a 7 minute thingie with tamil dialogues (and song clips!).. Its a slightly large download but you must watch it, it is HILARIOUS.

shwetha, you're referring to the one by the GCT college students, right?! yes, it's not just funny, it's just brilliant in its hilarity!! just loved it!! the whole video had a gr888 punchline when the paati says, "keragam pudicha paya...necklaceku aasa pattu usura uttu putteyn!"

At 2:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Correct Ram, the patti's punch line had me in splits. I also liked the reason why the ship started sinking and Velu's sheepish explanation about it :) God knows how they came up with such funny stuff, which makes me realized that nothing comes even a tiny fraction close to Tam humor, laden with generous dollops of nakkal!

shwetha, serioussssssly!
that was incredibly funny!

my favorite lines:

when De Caprio tries to hold Kate Winslet on the railings:
"Aaha, ena supera balance panreenge...any before training?"
"Aamam, munaala Gemini Circus-la vela paathen!"

when the engineers and captain discuss what cld be done, with the help of blueprints:
"indha pakkam es (escape) aava mudiyuma?"
"mudiyaadhu captain...vechuttange..."
"ena vechutaange?"
"aappu vechutaange!"

at the end when the clerk asks Kate Winslet for her details:
"naemm please..."
"Velu...Dhanalakshmi Velu!"
"paera paaru!"

Super 10 is the only thing I look forward to and prolly the only favorite program in that stupid SunTV channel =P

Good stuff! I missed out yesterday's though oops

I watched some videos of the lollu sabha, thanks to a link someone posted. *Shammmmmmma* kadi pa. Not a patch on super 10! the production values are slightly better, but humor wise Super 10 Rocks! I will stick with it.

Merino.. they only had election coverage yesterday.. no Super 10. All the different places where Karunanidhi went for election campaigning!.. If you like to watch thousands and thousands of folks gathering to see Kalaignar! :-)..

By the way, anybody catching T.R. on Sun TV right now!.. Very hilarious!.. Worth watching if you don't take it too seriously!

rajesh, looks like u probably saw 'lollu sabha' :)

sandya, now i feel bad i missed that one!

ferrari, i've seen a couple of 'lollu sabha' episodes on the net. but never heard of 'kadavul paadhi/mirugam paadhi' before. but title sounds interesting...

zero, guess u don't like the scary movie series too? the trailer for scary movie 4 was what inspired this post :)

shwetha, i probably wouldnt call the titanic one a spoof. maybe a remix :) but it was definitely hilarious. don't remember the lines as well as u guys but i remember the BGM and song clips used :)

Going on a tangent with 'Kadavul Paadhi', this was circulating shortly after 'Aalavandhaan' bombed, and Kamal-Dhanu got into a jagda.

Sing to the tune of 'Kadavul Paadhi' (Ram, look away):
Kaasu Paadhi, Loosu Paadhi Kalandhu Seidha Kalavai Naan
Veliye Kaasu Ulle Loosu Vilanga Mudiya Loosu Naan
Loosu Konru Loosu Konru Kaasai Valarkka Paarkinren
Aanal
Kaasu Thinru Unavai Thinru Loosu Mattum Valarkiradhe

Me also likings Lollu Sabha than Super 10.
But one gripe is both the programs frequently resort to twisting dialogues situations etc to toilet humour(literally!) - I dont deride toilet humour per se but it gets irritating beyond a point :-)

Of all the 'actors' in the two programmes, Santhanam is a mile above. He is no longer with Lollu Sabha so it has come down a bit but it is still ahead of Super 10.
Recently they had Chanramukhi spoof - The song devuda devuda, 'rajni' imposter goes and sits on a stove exactly when the song goes "soodu ra soodu ra indha pakkam soodu ra"...the others continue the dance only to be rudely interrupted by this guy "inge oruthan soodu soodunu kadharren..neenga paattukku aadittu irukkengale: :-))

In the same song, when it goes "Repeattu", 'rajni' repeats his previous steps . This goes on 5 6 times before he slaps the guy saying repeattu - "ethanai dadavaida repeattu repeattunu uyirai vaanguva. Repeat panni panni shoe-ve thenjudichi"

Ofcourse, the famous enna kodumai idhu saravanan was aptly spoofed too.
The icing on the cake was the revelation that Chandramukhi is none other than the male servant ( a senthil look alike) who , infact, almost does as well as jyothika in dance movements :-). Actually, I should say Jyothika was such a joke as a dancer that even this useless guy could imitate her movements pretty well :-).
On the whole , these programs do add to a lot of fun.

Hi Balaji,
Are u "bb" from TFM olden days? Just happened to see ur blog. As others have mentioned Vijay TV spoofs and other comedy programs are much better than SUN TV stuff. Because u guys discuss a lot on movie related stuff, can u or some other frequent visitors of ur blog give me some ideas,
I don't know if some of u here ( in USA) have replay TV ( a DVR basically but with lot more features), a great Gadget for internet video sharing ( IVS as it is called),I get SUN TV, my brother gets Vijay TV , since we both have the ReplayTV, thro' ReplayTV server, we just exchange these programs.( Check out www.poopli.com) Also this third party software DVarchive, just makes the life so easy to extract all ur MPEG files on ur replayTV( DVD quality) to ur PC and have ur favorite movies , programs archived to DVD or HD. I do have a lot of these Super 10's from past , it's just that I can't find a suitable way to share.

I like suntv super10....it is more hilarious than lollusabha...santhanam in lollu sabha was more like goundamani ...bit irritating...though to be honest i enjoyed those initial episodes of lollusabha..as they were not many shows like that...i especially like the other character who mimics sivaji so well...he is a class act i think...
sun tv super10 ..is far better....i saw episodes of chandramuki, t rajender being sharaterized by ganesh which was real class....it was so hilarious that u cant stop laughing....

In movies, VIVEK does a bit of it....
