Strange Bedfellows

In possibly the most sensational news so far in the run-up to the TN Assembly Elections, Vaiko has aligned himself with the AIADMK. This is just the latest example of the ever-shifting allegiances of political parties in TamilNadu.

With the AIADMK and the DMK having a stranglehold on state politics, the other parties have little choice other than to align with one of them. This way they can win atleast a few seats by holding on to Karunanidhi's or Jayalalitha's coattails while if they contest the elections on their own, they will most likely end up empty-handed. So I think all parties like the Congress(I), the BJP, etc. have had alliances with both the DMK and the AIADMK in the past. So Vaiko's move is not particularly surprising, inspite of his closeness to Karunanidhi and spats with Jayalalitha in the past.

But what surprised me was the stated reason for the move - more seats. There is no mention of "similar policies" or "shared objectives" or any of those phrases that are usually thrown out as reasons by political parties forming an alliance. It is perfectly obvious that Vaiko's alliance with AIADMK is only because Jayalalitha is promising him more seats. Shameful!

It is not purely due to the more no. of seats offered by amma. SUN TV has a policy of blacking out Vaiko (except when he can be shown in a negative context like yesterday). He feels DMK is using high handed tactics. Even MK has confirmed that he had such a feeling as early as Jan. MK has also mentioned that Vaiko's decision is not purely based on the seat issue.

Didn't amma put vaiko behind bars under POTA? How did they patch up? Wow, prostitution would have more morals than politics!!

Dear Balaji,

Since when have you started seeing reason in political alignments.

If you were looking for shared objectives that you are looking at a wrong place or being naive.

With Regards
Narasimhan

Balaji,
I have been following you website/blogs for last 6 years but never ever thought you had a liking for politics. But let me tell you.
Anything and everything is fair and correct if the objective is to kick karunanidhi's butt

Vaiko stand is purely expected..As you mentioned its only bcos of number of seats..there is no more reason..And the reason he revelead while reporting to media is ironical..JJ put Vaiko in POTa due to delegation of POTA from Central Govt where the Karunanidhi also a part..BUt here it shd be notable that..Vaiko also supported the BJP at that time and refused to unsupport them bcos of these..

kaps, i guess that makes me feel a li'l bit better. my comment was based purely on what was mentioned in the rediff news item.

anon, i guess the # of seats helped them patch up :)

narasimhan, actually i wasnt looking for shared objectives. i was just looking for them SAYING that they had the alliance because of shared objectives :)

anon, i have a lot interest in politics. but haven't been following it in as much as detail as i did when i was in india. but this news was too shocking to not write about :)

karthik, that last line is probably going to be the most popular as elections near :)
