Emtan Magan

[Pic Courtesy Karthik]

We've had directors like KB and Sundar. K. Vijayan move from the big screen to television so far. Now here's a director going the other way. The movie Emtan Magan, which was launched [link courtesy Sandya] today, is being directed by Thirumurugan, the director of the hit megaserial Metti Oli. Lets wait and see if he makes the transition as successfully as the film directors did going the opposite way (nice to see that none of the characters in the film's poster are crying!).

By the way, who or what is Emtan?

andha thumbnails-la nasser, saranya, vadivelu and....? yaarandha kutties?

i wish gopika would get meaningful roles...the problem (for her, not for me!) is that she is so devoid of any glamor and has such a girl-next-door appearance that i think she's finding it difficult to land plum roles opposite big stars for whom u need a "star" more than an actor to play opp...

but i think she's a beautiful, talented actress...was gr88 in autograph and extremely sweet n natural in ponniyin selvan, kana kanden and even a masala movie like thotti jaya...

natural-a nadikka,
naetru revathi
indru sneha
naalai gopiks?

I think the name originates from ww1 times. Chennai was attacked by a German cruiser called sms emden. You can google for emden and find more info.So the name has evolved to mean someone who is kind of a jithan/strong/unbendable and so on.

ya... munimma is rite.... Emden was a famous ship during the war time.... there is still a cliche in TN wen someone does something big unexpected or is kinda adamant, they say 'periya emden thaan ivan'!!

i have heard of 'Emden' around in Madurai slang, when I was reallly young.

I assume, from the poster, the movie to be a family-love-comedy.. Hope there is no hang-over from Metti Oli..

From wikipedia

To this day in some parts of south India, a particularly daring and capable person is referred to in the vernacular as "Emden".

wow, looks like i was the only one who didn't know what the word meant! don't think i've ever heard of it. i guess i've just increased my tamil vocabulary and my history a little bit. thanx guys :)

ram, i that was exactly what happened to shobana(there was a discussion in a prev post on this). revathi turned out to be very lucky but other actresses who have the gal-next-door look find it difficult to stay for long and find meaningful roles. i think thats what happening to sneha too...

filbert, based on my posts u probably know i get my cinenews mainly from sify and indiaglitz. didn't see any mention of 'mozhi' on either of those sites. u got any links?

Hi, I think it is the name of a submarine or destroyer that came close to the shores of Chennai during the II World war. If I am not mistaken it was a Japanese submarine. I have heard people use it to describe someone who is a pain...

Emden was the German ship that tried to bomb Chennai during WW2. The bomb that was dropped near Chennai harbour did not explode and even today one can see that site.
