Rajni and Shriya?

Update: Looks like this could be true. As Prasanna mentioned in the comments, Shriya being picked as the heroine has been reported in The Hindu today. Btw, is it Shreya or Shriya?

The heroine role in Sivaji is still up for grabs. First it was supposed to be Ayesha Takia but that rumour's (thankfully!) died down. The latest name to pop up is Shriya, the heroine in the recently released Mazhai. That is her first Tamil film though she's apparently acted with all top heroes in Telugu.

Lets see if this is rumor or news...

Nice. Although I wouldn't have minded that Takia kid either since all these chicks on the block seem to be cast from the same mold. I mean its not like they are going to use their own voice to speak Tamil fluently and go all emotional over "old manukku" :) Too bad Asin doesn't seem to be getting the part.

Shriya looks very cute in 'Mazhai' movie trailers..good choice if the rumour is indeed true.

Eventhough she looks good, I feel that she doesn't express herself very well.. I am not sure, if Shankar can make her emote well to suit the scrip, since she is more of a model rather than an actress...

anyhow, if it is true, we can expect some hardwork from Shankar's side.

Tis information seems to be true afterall.
Shreya is Rajini's next lady !

I honestly think that the choice would have been definitely between Trisha and Shriya.. Considering the current market that both women have in Telugu, they would seem like an obvious choice. One of the things that might be important to Rajini is the Telugu market. Moreover, both Rajini's and Shankar's films have a long stint of doing excellent business in Andhra..

Despite his more-than-gracious praise for Aishwarya Rai, I'm sure Rajini has finally realized (and I'm sure Vijay will too soon enough!) that Ice will never agree to act with them that neither of the Southern Super Stars have a huge reach in the North or anywhere outside the large South Indian population around the world (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam). But really.. THAT'S IT!..

Ice has made it somewhat into the big leagues of Hollywood English films (Don't get me wrong.. I don't mean "made it" as in 'starring in blockbusters that are raking cash at the box office). She has succeeded to some extent in showing her face in prominent projects (with more to come!) and don't think she will venture to act in a South Indian language film unless her market crashes and burns in Hollywood! (don't think that that's likely for now!)...

All these Ayesha Takia and Rani Mukherjee never make it into the equation in the end anyway..

Check out the Sify article on the Shriya choice. Unlike what the article says, I never thought that Nayantara or Asin were ever in contention.. (maybe Asin, but definitely not Nayantara after the Ghajini debacle!)..

But honestly, choosing Shriya after U20E18 and Mazhai, is rather surprising... I was betting my marbles on Trisha this time.. Poor kid lost out again!.. By the way, since everybody talks about it often, I'll throw it in as well.. do you think Sims has a chance (since she was the only big heroine in recent time who hasn't acted with Rajini yet! :-)...

Yeah, you are right. How could I not have "considered" Jo?! She's really grown on me these days...

I heard this girl Vidya Balan (I liked Parineeta) might be in Kamal's next movie. I wouldn't mind seeing her in a Tamil movie :)

ramc, shankar has worked with aish before. so making shreya act shouldn't be a problem :)

vee-jay, agreed. she was pathetic in 18-20. but could've been the poor characterization too. will know better after seeing 'mazhai'.

sandya, both rajni and shankar are clever businessmen. the telugu market is defly on their minds. even earlier, soundarya, ramya, etc. were all picked keeping their popularity in mind.
and yeah, shriya came as a surprise to me too.
no, i don't think sims has a chance with any top hero inimel. the 'mommy' promotion spells career end for heroines in tamil cinema. has there been any actress who acted as heroine after having a kid?

The closest that a married woman who was pregnant or after the birth of a child, who still acted as a heroine (or did female dominated roles!) is Kushboo. But really, it depends on what you call a "heroine" role!.. I guess, you can't really call a film like Magalirkkaaga or Power of Woman a heroine film.. or even a film like Simmasanam (where they may be multiple heroines!)..

I did a little bit of tracking of my own and found Mrs. Kush has acted in quite a few films after her marriage in Feb. 2000 (well, she was already pregnant when she got hitched to Sundhar C.), but whether they really qualify her to be called a heroine.. is left to our scrutiny!...

If anything, she is probably the only actress in tamil cinema, who came closest to being called a "heroine" even after marriage.. (if you consider acting with Saratkumar, Satyaraj and the like, as having heroine qualities by today's standards!)..

ram, LOL. unmaiyai pesi thaane aaganum :)

sandhya, well if she acted with sarathkumar or satyaraj after she became a mom, i think that counts. big achievement in our tamil field, i would say...

The movie is going to be a full and full Rajni movie. Also, being a Shankar movie heroine will be just another character in the movie...
