2004 Filmfare Awards

Filmfare awards for Tamil movies in 2004 have been announced. Seems to be mostly in sync with my picks for the best of 2004 on bbreviews.

Best Film- Autograph
I picked Virumaandi but it was a toss-up between the two. No complaints

Best Director- Cheran (Autograph)
My choice too

Best Actor- Surya (Peralagan)
My choice too

Best Actress -Sandhya (Kathal)
I didn't see Kaadhal until 2005 and so Sandhya didn't make it to the nominees. She'd probably have won if she had

Best Music director -Yuvan Shankar Raja (7-G Rainbow Colony), Bharadwaj (Autograph)
I picked dad over son but it was again a toss-up. I loved the music in both Virumaandi and 7/G and picked the former because of the background score and how it really elevated particular scenes.

Best Supporting actor – Madhavan (Ayitha Ezhuthu)
I classified Madhavan as 1 of the heroes in Aaydha Ezhuthu rather than a supporting actor and so nominated him for Best Actor. But definitely deserved if he's seen as a supporting actor.

Best Supporting actress-Mallika (Autograph)
Again, same as the last one. I though Mallika, Gopika and Sneha were all heroines rather than supporting actresses. But deserved win if she's seen as supporting actress.

Best Villain- Prakash Raj (Ghillli)
I disagree(and most will disagree with me I'm sure:-). Prakashraj was definitely the most charismatic but for pure, undiluted villainy, I still go with Pasupathy in Virumaandi.

Best Comedian- Vivek (Peralagan)
My choice too.

Other awards:
Best newcomer- Ravi Krishna (7-G Rainbow Colony)
Best Choreographer- Raju Sundaram (Ghillli)
Life Time Acheivement Award- K.R.Vijaya

PS: Me thinks the Best Actor and Best Actress awards for 2005 are already a lock.

i will continue to lament the continued snubs to Kudaikkull Mazhai...man, avangalum maara maataanga, naanum maara maaten...but only the former matters!

i do agree with u abt Pasupathy though...he was the most menacing of the lot...by a mile...he's got the looks and body language down cold...

For 2005, hmmm, let me guess - 'Raam' Jeeva for actor and 'CM' Jo for actress. Correct???
I haven't seen 'Raam'.

..and from what I've read, 'Kanaa Kandein' Prithviraj for villain.

ram, idha naan edhirpaarthen :)

vc, though filmfare seems better than dinakaran-medimix, i think the awards go for both talent and popularity. so i was thinking vikram (for anniyan) and jo.

and yes, prithviraj is way ahead in the race for best villain.

I think vikram and jo will have a walk over (till date) unless I see something magical in the forthcoming films

Umm...konjam touchingah edutha...awardah.! Was Autograph all that great.! I am not sure.!

Hats off to all winners!

Why do they always annouce the winners of these film awards earlier? I think it would be better if people actually had to wait to see the award ceremony to find out who the winneres are. The shows would be more interesting and more spontaneous. People could have their Filmfare Sunday, prepare sundal and murukku, sit in front of their Tvs and play Who guessed it right?

What say???

bladehawk, i think mallika won very deservedly. sure MJ acted well but mallika acted without seeming to act. she played both a schoolgirl and a mother of two so convincingly through her body language, dialog delivery, etc. it was a great performance.

ioiio, lineup of major movies for the rest of the yr paatha avangaluku edhum competition irukum thonala!

narayanan, enna sir ipdi ketutinga. u r the 1st person i'm talking to who was not impressed by autograph. it was a very emotional, honest, touching movie with great directorial touches.

desi, i think its because of logistics that they do this. this way only the stars who win awards show up and the others don't have to feel disappointed after coming to the show. nammoorla thaan ego konjam thookkalaache!

and then we have the fans. can't guess what rajni fans(for eg.) would do if their thalaivar was nominated but didnt win an award!

Balaji, I'm another that wasnt impressed with Autograph =P

I didnt even bother finishing up the movie..

Anyways, looking at others talking about possible winners for 2005... I think Jeeva should get one for Raam.. Or atleast the movie get an award or special mention... That was a great movie, and great performance by Jeeva...

i also feel that madhavan should not e classified as a supporting actor.

hi all
in case u guys r not aware these awards r bought!!!:)
but i agree with deepika
...autograph had an universal theme that many cld identify with.
also think meera jasmine acted better than mallika..
In AE mani rathnam commented on this vs rani mukherjee as both versions were taken using the same sets simultaneously.

Abhirami's performance in 'Virumandi' was really good. Too bad 'Kaadhal' got released in 2004!!. I am not sure which one but one of these awards used to have a separate 'critics' category like best actor(critics) or something like that. Not anymore, huh?

At 3:04 PM, Blogger ioiio said...

balaji,
count me in for some1 against autograph.. I slept halfway thru the movie

At 7:43 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

bladehawk, me thinks autograph was a better film than AE. AE was good but i had quite a few complaints about it. main one was it felt rushed after the 3 flashbacks ended.

and they had the awards list in indiaglitz today and that didnt have the technical awards either. maybe they dont award them??

At 7:48 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

deepika/rekhs, yes 'autograph' was day2day happening and more universal. but it had a very emotional impact. very heartfelt...

me too, i too vaguely remember the critics awards. used to think that was just a ploy to bring more actors to the function :-)

u too ioiio?! surprised so many people didnt like autograph!!

Agree with you on the choice of villain, Pasupathy(dint know his name untill now) was definitely better dhan Prakashraj atleast in this case. Sandhya not so sure, well depends who else was nominated.

At 5:39 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

kal, pasupathy makes a very good villain. he was good in 'dhool' too. and he proved he was a good actor with his comic touch in 'Mumbai Express'.

i thot sandhya was excellent in 'kaadhal' and not just in comparison to others. but true that tamil industry is so male-dominated that it'll be tough coming up with even 5 nominations each yr for best actress!

Filmfare Awards: South Films.

Click on the number "7" for the technical awards. It looks like a Mr. Gopal Reddy (cinematographer for Varsham) and Playback singer Chitra for the same film have won filmfares..

hi sandy( can i abbreviate yr name?)ever since my mom passed away i am plagued by reporters who want to know why/how i did the last rites...and i asked one of them.. and he said the same..
chithra for playback( i believe it is only for one singer, male or female and for whole of the south,
not lang-wise)and importance is given only for best actor/actress/
director/md and supporting artiste
but idhu ellam oru eye wash dhaan..
money talks:)

At 10:37 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

deepika, prakashraj produced and acted in 'azhagiya theeye'. direction was by radha mohan.

At 12:43 AM, Blogger Balaji said...

hmmm... seems strange that they'd have a single playback singer award for the entire south industry.

At 12:39 PM, Blogger Balaji said...

bladehawk, agree with u 100% there. and there's the visibility that unknown movies could gain with an award. without the award they lose out on that too and keep languishing in anonymity... the end result is that people miss out on really good movies.
