2004 Dinakaran-Medimix Awards

Sun TV screened the awards show on Sunday. Overall, it was a typical Tamil awards show with ill-prepared comperers(Sriman and a woman, whose name I did not catch), gaudy sets, poorly-choregraphed dances and a sweating audience. On the positive side, the awards presentations themselves went smoothly, most of the awards seem well-deserved and almost all the winners had really short acceptance speeches(unless there was some editing by Sun TV). But there was a large gallery of stars present and thats pretty much the point of the show, isn't it (especially considering the winners were already known!)?

Following were the winners in the main categories(all of them were present to accept their award):
Best Film: Autograph
Best Director: Cheran (Autograph)
Best Actor: Vijay (Gilli)
Best Actress: Jyothika (Perazhagan)
Best Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja (Manmadhan)
Best Male Playback Singer: Karthik (7G Rainbow Colony)
Best Lyricist: Pa.Vijay (Autograph)
Best Cinematographer: Vijay Milton (Kaadhal)
Best Debutant Actor: Ravi Krishna (7G Rainbow colony)
Best Debutant Actress: Sandhya (Kaadhal)
Best Comedian: Vadivelu (Giri, Aiye)
Best Character actor: Vijayan (7G Rainbow Colony)
Best Character actress: Devayani (New)
Best Villian: Prakash Raj (Gilli)
Best Screenplay: Simbhu (Manmadhan)
Best Debutant Director: Radha Mohan (Azhagiya Theeye)
Best Choreographer: Raju Sundaram (Gilli)
Best Stunt Master: Kanal Kannan (M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi)
Best Art director: Rajeevan (Madurey)
Best Child artiste: Arunkumar (Kaadhal)
Best Art Film: Kamaraj
Lifetime Achievement Awards: Vaali, Nagesh

And now, a few awards for the show...

Cutest Actress: Jyothika (this woman really knows how to dress and present herself!)

Funniest Joke:
Sriman: Cheran, is it true you are going to take Autograph Part II?
Cheran: Yes, I just need to love 4 more women first. Will direct it after that!

Best stage performance: Rahasiya (Seenaa Thaanaa... from Vasoolraja M.B.B.S)

Most stone-faced actor: Vijay (no expression whatsoever, even when Sriman talked about him)

Most embarassing moment: Nagesh referring to Kamal as his sagodharan before correcting it to "like my son"!

Most pleasant surprise: Jyothika's acceptance speech in Tamil

Worst Speech: Simbhu (came off as arrogant and rambling)

Best Speech: Vijay (managed to be modest, praise his peers and please the audience)

Most necessary but missed segment: In Memoriam (Soundarya, etc.)

awards that were least deserved:

best actor, best actress (even tho Jo Jo Jo Jothika is a darling...!), best character actress (were they on dope?!), best art director (oh, come on...Madurey??? give this award to someone who created something classy). tho my whole wide world knows that i'm extremely partial towards kudaikull mazhai, i honestly feel that the movie deserved at least an award for art direction...the movie's 'set' aided the director in portraying the protagonist's mindset...

awards where they got it SURPRISINGLY right-
best character actor for vijayan; best debutant director...azhagiye theeye should've won more awards...it was a wonderful movie...never fail to smile whenever i think of the "chithappa" character! hats off to prakashraj for believing in this subject...

Awards in cinema are mostly meaningless-Oscars are no exception. And when it comes to Tamil awards, you can watch them for a good laugh - at the very least they provide a good break to those regular watchers of the torrid megaserials. Yesterday's compering was rank bad and the awards were mostly popularity contests. So whichever movies/actors raked in at the box office, they got the awards. Only surprise being that Kamaraj was recognized. Why is Kamal being invited to such shows and why does he attend them? The whole thing must have been quite embarassing.
Last time, I had a good laugh when the Lifetime achievment awards in Tamil films was given to Vijayshanthi by Filmfare, right after they give it to Yesudas.

I wanted to blog my thots on this one too. I missed the first dance, but watched the rest. The emcees were better than some other shows I have seen. That girl used to cohost thillana thillana. forgot her name.
Agree about seena thaana being the best dance of all. inspite of her breezy beach outfit :-) She was probably the only one dressed to suit the weather ;-P
The songs they picked for the rest of the dances were nothing great. Considering that I wanted to watch especially for the dances, such a washout.
Khushboo's addendum was cute, looks more like sundar.c.
Vijay is so wooden, and he seriously needs diction lessons. wonder if he has all his teeth wired tight or something.
JoJo, sitting next to Surya looked nice, although I am not a fan.
Anyway, these awards are selected by people who go for mass movies, so except for Autograph, rest were all potboilers that won.
Vikram looked nice, except for that sembattai look.
Simbu, full of himself. Looks a lot like Senior in the clips they showed where he had facial fuzz. Scary!
Didn't realize Vaali did all those songs. Good ones too.
Sorry I used up so much space :-)

I have just some questions:

1) Was Virumandi not made in 2004?

2)Didnt the art director create the 'Alanganallur' and other village sets in Madurai, which we came to know only in the news?

3) Vijay ACTED in Gilli? (Thanks to Balaji for the 'stone-faced' comment).

4) Who was the best female playback singer? (My award to Madhumitha for "Kana Kaanum" from 7G-RC").

ram, IMO classiness needn't be the yardstick for awards. art direction for madurey wasn't an award i was upset about since erecting the realistic street set would've taken a fair amount of work. but do agree with u on the undeserved best actor/actress/character actress awards. overall, i think i was happy with more awards than i was unhappy about. and the fact that these were popular awards virtually eliminated KM since it was seen by so few people!

vijay, i think kamal came solely for the lifetime achievement award for nagesh. atleast they got both those awards right this time. can u imagine his thots when he saw vijay get the best actor award in the same year that his virumaandi was released?!

munimaa, did i beat u to it or r u still gonna blog about it?
rahasya's dress made her performance seem almost like a record dance. but dance looked professional though.
jo sitting next to surya?? r u sure? i thot he didn't make it to the show... she had such a cute smile and the jo jo jothika song playing when she walked to the stage was a nice touch...

gp, good questions. i too was surprised by lack of any awards for virumaandi. definitely deserved the screenplay and art direction awards.
i didn't see the best female singer award being presented. but remember reading that chitra won it for Autograph.

Ah!!! I thought Vijay's speech was too long!!! Then again I cant stand the guy, that whatever he does, I'll pick it a part.

Wasnt it sweet that Jothika dedicated the award to Surya? =P

Ragasiya's dancing could have been a little longer. Her performance was the only enjoyable thing.

Everyone else sucked basically... It was a boring award ceremony... Sriman and the girl sucked at presenting it... That's the girl who comes in "Ithu namma neram".. a stupid lil comedy show... Sadly, I dont know her name either =P
