Sivakasi Audio

It is obvious Vijay is trying to ape Rajni but does he have to do it even with the choice of music directors?! I remember those days when Kamal movies would have great music by Ilaiyaraja while Rajni would end up with music directors like Chandrabose! Is that why Vijay had Dhina scoring music for Tiruppaachi and now has Srikanth Deva for Sivakasi? Or could it be that A.M.Rathnam lost so much money on Ponniyin Selvan that he had to skimp on the selection of the music director here?

Whatever the reason, Srikanth Deva, who doesn’t seem to have a single original bone in his body, misses the the chance for a big break and fails to come up with even a single good song. The worrisome part is that if Sivakasi becomes a hit and the songs get a lot of playtime on TV, they could be labeled hits and get him even more movies!

1. Ada Ennatha…
An average duppanguthu number indistinguishable in any way from the other similar-sounding numbers Vijay has had in his movies ever since Apdi Podu… became a hit. If you hear this song without any other hints, you will immediately be able to guess that its from a Vijay-starrer but will be unable to name the movie. Its that generic.

2. Deepavali…
This is a high-energy song that is sung with enthusiasm by KK and Vasundhara. But it reminds you of a bunch of other songs at different places. The most obvious are the section starting with Neerum Neruppum…, which sounds like Vikram’s Vanithamani…, the veenai bit, which sounds like the bit from Vasoolraja’s Seenaa Thaanaa…, and the Tamilish rap interlude, which is exactly like the interlude in Anniyan’s Kaadhal Yaanai…. Still(and maybe because of all those inspirations!) the pick of the album though.

3. Dheivathukke…
Some respite comes in the form of this sober, pathos song overflowing with mother sentiments. It’s a very 80s sounding number (usually sung by the likes of Rajkiran) with a very ordinary tune. Most probably a bathroom/cigarette break for all Vijay fans!

4. Idhu Enna…
Again a number that sounds like it belongs to the 80s. It’s the only slow duet on the album but isn’t particularly catchy.

5. Kodambakkam Area…
Another distressingly unoriginal duppanguthu number. The Naan Superstaru Jodi Thaan line sung by the female would seem to indicate that this is Nayanthara’s item number (after Ghajini, “Nayanthara’s item number” is the scariest phrase in Tamil cinema right now!). Only interesting part of the song is a line which complains about high ticket rates!

6. Vaada Vaada…
The obvious intro song for Vijay with a number of lines targeted at his fans. Like Devuda Devuda…, this one too is filled with advice rather than self-praise and I kinda like that better. The lyrics here laud hard work, ask people to stand on their own legs, etc. etc.

I have been listening quite often to "Thaalatuthae Vaanam" from Kadal Meengal and realized that not a lot of songs today are sung along those...lines. In addition to being simply melodious, that song agrees with the general atmosphere of the movie accurately, something difficult to come across in movies today (unless it were directed by a Cheran).

Vijay padathukku indha paatugaLe jaasthi..not that I am defending Srikanth Deva who has churned out noise more than anyone else in recent times. For the sake of art and betterment of Tamil cinema and music here's wishing that Sivakasi bombs badly. I hope our makkals dont disappoint. The other album Maja isnt all that great either. Blown opportunity(again) for Vidyasaagar.

With Rahman doing less movies, the ineptness of the current MDs have been showcased in plenty.

reagan, thanx for the correction. i didnt know about the songs by mani sharma and devi sriprasad. was thinking of dhina and typed imman instead...

gopi, thats 1 of my favorites too. melody is definitely the victim in this age of fast beats and duppanguthu.

i had similar observations for the Deepavali Deepavali song. if it is so obvious, why is he copying it?

yep gopi and bb, thaalattuthey vaanam is a lovely melody...I listened to it once a couple of weeks ago when I went out for a run...it goes really well with your twilight, even if you dont have your sujatha by your side ;) I remember liking the first half of Kadal Meengall...i thot the 2nd Kamal character kinda made the film a regular masala flick...remember that one, guys?

Yeah, I know what you mean, dude. It seems to start out like it was a Balachander movie then slides into...well, lets just say that if it hadn't been a Kamal movie, I would have moved on.

Krishna listened to "Majaa" songs and was ranting and raving about the Udit Narayan song in that film. He actually thought quite highly of most of the songs by Vidyasagar (Believe me!.. after 9 years of marriage and knowing how difficult it is to please Krishna when it comes to movie music).. if he even utters the word "good" or "great".. you really know that something is really "good."..

Vashishtar vaayaal brahma rishi! :-)..

I liked none of the songs.. they are stale.

SD should have made use of this opportunity to come up with some interesting bits, which he missed. there is not big difference between this and 'madurey' / 'thirupaachi' type of songs...

idhellam ketta kaadhu thaan valikkum... On reading Kaps' review of the same album, I jus listened to the copy of Vanithamani... That being a really sensuous track and one of my favs from Kamal-IR combo, I was all the more pissed off... Hardly listened to 2 minutes of the song b4 I decided it was enuf!!!

After listening to Vijay's recent numbers, I don't bother to listen to the audio before the movie release. I am sure the songs would be played a zillion times in all channels and it would become hits irrespective of the quality of the songs. Btw, I am surprised that Vijay agreed for a MD of Srikanth Deva's calibre after the debacle of Sachein audio (along with the movie). I thought he will play it safe and go with Vidyasagar.

//after Ghajini, “Nayanthara’s item number” is the scariest phrase in Tamil cinema right now!)//

LOL :)

well i think you have not heard all the good songs of music director chandrabose. He has given many hit numbers and great melodies like medhuva medhuva in annanagar mudhal theru, a good folk in manithan is vanatha parthaen, santhosham kaanadha vaazhvunda from vasanthi sung by yesudoss was a great song, oru panpadu is a another good melody from raja chinna roja, chinna chinna poove from shankar guru and a super hit folk song from the same movie "kaaki chatta potta machan" andavana parkanum from makkal en pakkam and many many more.. its better you hear all collections of chandrabose and then comment on him. Iam a good follower of him .. i love illayaraja very much but this guy chandrabose was a very unlucky guy where he never got any good directors or good films as most of his good songs will go with flop films.. if you want i can send you his great numbers as i have all of his songs in my collection.
