MiPod

[Pic Courtesy Apple]

While there are situations where I use an MP3 player(while running at the gym, during the walk after lunch, on an airplane, etc.), I'm not one of those guys who walks around with earbuds seemingly attached permanently to the ears. So while I have always had an eye on the incredibly sleek and cool-looking Apple mini iPod, I could never get myself to plunk down the $250 that the MP3 player cost. So I settled for the iAudio CW200. At around $80, its 128MB(that holds 25 - 30 Tamil songs) seemed like a good deal.

But the desire for the mini iPod never really died down. I got my chance when Citibank Online offered a free iPod for opening an account and paying atleast 2 monthly bills using their Billpay (they've been offering some really cool goodies to sign up. My friend got himself a Sony DVD player and recently there were offering $200 in cash). Since I pay all my bills online anyway, this wasn't a major departure for me and I quickly signed up and moved 2 of my monthly bills to Citibank.

Its been about 3 months since I opened the account and I finally received my mini iPod today. Its silver and is supposed to hold 1000 songs in its 4GB space. This is my first Apple product and the first noticeable thing was the packaging. It was simple and elegant with a single line "Designed by Apple in California" on the box. The package itself opened like a book with the mini iPod neatly encased in the middle and accessories hidden in boxes on either side. The iPod itself is a little larger than a credit card and very impressive to look at.

Needless to say, I had it connected to my computer the next minute, moving over a few of the albums I've been listening to, in a flash. Inspite of the small package, the sound quality is awesome. And since I've used the other MP3 player, the mini iPod's click wheel seems very easy to use and makes navigation a breeze.

The iPod created a revolution in the MP3 player market, helping Apple very quickly capture a leading share of the market. Now I know why. Let the music begin...

Ipod is slowly catchin up here too but I guess it is too pricey for Indian markets. We have a Apple showroom next to my house in Bangalore and Ipods seem to be a regular thing in newspaper ads these days. The price range is somewhere between Rs.9000 - 20000.

That's too costly for a MP3 player, IMO. I own a Sony MD walkman that I got in US for $75 (in ubid.com)2 years back. The MDs costed around $10 for 4 with each of them holding around 20/40/60 songs depening on the recording quality we choose. And the MDs are re-writabale for a million times.

was watching "Rhythm" (for probably the 100th time) on DVD yday and while listening to "Nadhiye Nadhiye" realized how far we've come in terms of technology ...and how much its increased the visceral thrill of watching movies...

I've owned my iPod for almost 2 years now, and haven't had any problems. My wife uses it **everyday** (with a FM transmitter) for her 1-1.5 hours drive. The battery life is quite poor - ~5 hrs instead of the advertised 8. But since I haven't taken it on a long trip, this hasn't been a problem.

This was a gift. I may not have bought it otherwise, but my concern was more about Apple's ability to stay the leader in this space. Last thing I wanted was a bunch of AAC files and no good players to play them on. But Apple seems to be maintaining their lead so far.

After considering Dogmatix, I named mine Casper. Casper, the (user)friendly MP3 player!

Btw, with iTunes, you can only transfer music from your computer to your iPod, not the other way around.

Why would you want to do that, you ask. Well, your computer may crash. Or, maybe you want to transfer tunes from somebody else's pod. Not that any of us would do that ;)

If you want to do something like this, check out ephpod (freeware). In the early days, iPod was officially Mac-only, and I think ephpod was one way of connecting the iPod to Windows.

vibin, i have to say that's the 1st negative thing i've heard about the iPod. esp. something as serious as having problems in 6 months. I had no real problems with my earlier iAudio(except for the space ofcourse but i knew what i was buying!). but iPod's way ahead on controls and navigation.

prakash, what is the fm transmitter? i'm guessing it helps connect the ipod to your car... how do u connect it to your car stereo?

Interestingly enough, the latest BusinessWeek has an article on iPod accessories -- http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_20/b3933411.htm

The FM transmitter I have is similar to the Griffin's RoadTrip mentioned in the article. But mine is Belkin and is cheaper (~$40-50). Basically, you hook the transmitter to your pod, set the transmitter to a frequency that isn't being used, and the music plays on ur FM radio. Definitely avoid the transmitters that only have 3-4 preset frequencies. With mine, I can select any frequency. I'm in Cleveland, and have no trouble finding unused frequencies. May be a problem in the Bay area.

If you have a tape player in your car, you can also get a casette adapter that works similarly.
