Coming Soon - Kuruvi

The insipid nature of Tamil cinema so far in 2008 is clear from the fact that we are 5 months into the year but coming up on only the second movie(after Bheema) that I've really looked forward to. The gang that gave us Gilli 4 years ago is back with Kuruvi, which is releasing this weekend. With hits like Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Santosh Subramniyam, Tamil cinema is looking better that it did even a few weeks ago but we've still not had a true-blue blockbuster yet this year and I'm hoping that Kuruvi is the first.

The term 'kuruvi' is used to describe those who make frequent trips between Singapore and Chennai with the express purpose of smuggling goods from Singapore. The film is supposed to be about Vijay getting caught in one such smuggling ring and extricating himself. From the looks of the trailer, it is heavy on action with some romance, comedy and songs thrown in.

After stumbling at the box-office with Azhagiya Thamizh Magan, Vijay will be looking for a hit with Kuruvi to keep up his reputation as Tamil cinema's biggest box-office star after Rajni. He is paired with Trisha again. The pair has had both hits(Gilli, Tiruppaachi) and flops(Aadhi) and will be looking for another hit to maintain the tag of 'lucky pair'. Kuruvi has two stars from Sivaji. While Vivek is the comedian, Suman, who walked in after Prakashraj dropped out due to his busy schedule, plays the villain.

While I do like Vijay, my expectations for his movies are high or low depending on the director he has teams up with. So I looked forward to Pokkiri quite a bit because of Prabhu Deva while I was rather lukewarm about Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. On that scale, my expectations for Kuruvi are sky-high since the film has our best - and my favorite - masala film director at the helm. With Dhill, Dhool and Gilli, Dharani showed us that he had mastered the art of creating fast-paced, well-balanced masala films that had no dull moments. Not surprisingly, all three were huge box-office hits. He then went to Telugu, where he made Bangaram with Pawan Kalyan. That film received scathing reviews and was a flop. Now that he's back in Tamil I am hoping the Telugu film was just a blip on his radar and that he has recovered his touch.

Vidyasagar has always come up with crowd-pleasing, popular soundtracks for Dharani. His soundtracks for Vijay haven't been as successful. Kuruvi's album falls between those two extremes. Mozhu Mozhunnu... is very catchy and the only song that I liked on the first listen. Anuradha Sriram's voice is perfectly suited for the fast number. But a couple of the other songs have grown on me too. Palaanadhu... makes us hum too with its heavy beats and catchy tune. Dandana Darna... is a typical Vijay introduction number. Thaen Thaen... is one of those standard Vidyasagar melodies but is a bit too generic and not as good as some of his other soft numbers. I'm not a big fan of Yogi.B's rap and so Happy New Year... leaves me cold inspite of Sunidhi's powerful voice.

Let's hope Kuruvi flies high at the box-office.

I'm watching "Kuruvi" tommorow morning. Lets see how the film goes, i hope this film is as good as "ghilli" which to my opinion, which was the last best film of Vijay.

Venkatrangan, i'm kinda having mix feelings for "Dasavathram". i wish the trailers had not leaked out most of the roles. It has some how drained out some of my expectation from the film. songs were all grear and caught my fancy on the first listen itself. The videos songs are out check it out on youtube..

The movie looks promising but then again i'll never know it till i see it for myself. Yogi B's number disappointed me this time around. So i got to agree with you on that. However i'm getting slighly tired of Vijay-trisha pairing. i look forward to vijay-nayantara pairing though. =)

With the IPL season on, I highly doubt that the movie will be a box office hit even if it is good.. All the other films Santosh.. Yaaredi.. etc. revenuues have decreased considerably after the IPL has started.. So let us see which Vijay wins - Actor Vijay or Brand Ambassador Vijay???

Didnt you just have a blog on Kuruvi few days back?
I know that there is'nt much to write about for upcoming Tamil films this year, but still..:-)

Although they might be some weeks or months away I think the ones I expect the most are obviously Daasavatharam, followed by Aayirathil Oruvan and then Vaaranam Aayiram. Naan Kadavul is also there, but since this is Bala we are talking about eppo varumnu Kadavulukku dhaan velicham :-)

The Shankar and Prakash Raj produced movies this year havent quite lived up to expectations and thats a mild disappointment.

Hi Balaji!
On a Digressive note: The only movie I have been WAITING EAGERLY with lots of excitement for more than a year is DASAVATHARAM! I am really impressed with the trailer and songs are simple and great (except for one). I simply fell in love with "Kallai therinthAl" and "Mukunda Mukunda". (I can hear all the words in a tamil song after a long while!)

Saw the trailer of Kuruvi – seems to me all that there was stunt sequences (do you think it gave you any idea of the plot – Not to me!!) one after the other (gravity defying Vijay just like all other tamil heroes from Rajini to Ganga Karuppu!) The song you mentioned has a hang-over feel of “appadi podu”! I like Dharani’s films - especially Dhil and Gilli (dhool is irritating like Sakalakalavallavan). We will know in a day whether the team which delivered a super-hit called Gilli – had another Gilli on the hands or another Adhi!

Dasavatharam songs sound cheap in my opinion. Himesh's music sounds too much like your run of the mill bollywood masala movie's music. Also too much english in the songs for my liking. YSR or ARR would've been a much better choice.

Dham Dhoom songs are pretty good, especially the one by the amazing Bombay Jayashree. This was Jeeva's ongoing project before he died of heart attack.

I duno Balaji.. I'm so tired of masala flicks.. nothing clicks well anymore. I did finally get to watch Anjathey and enjoyed it much.

Anyways... Kuruvi songs are very catchy, my favorite being Pallanadhu and least fave mozhu mozhu. I can't stand Anurada sriram's singing :P

Dhaam Dhoom songs are pretty good too.. I agree about Dasavatharam songs having a cheap feel Sujay.. It could have been better.

venkat, am definitely looking fwd to 'dasavatharam' too. and even more than i'm looking fwd to 'kuruvi'. just that 'kuruvi' is coming out 1st :)

skanda, as always u'll be watching it b4 me. I gotta wait till fri. evening :)

Megan, already tired of vijay-trisha? but yeah, vijay-nayan should be a good one too :)

robin, i read on sify that they've moved the release from fri to sat. due to a match on fri. so looks like brand ambassador vijay has already won that one :)

vijay, that was just a quick note when the pics and audio came out. this is the full-blown, official 'coming soon' post that i do for movies i'm looking fwd to :)

apala, yes the trailer definitely had too many stunts and they did seem to be gravity-defying type :)

sujay/merino, not sure what u mean by 'cheap feel' for 'dasavatharam' songs. i kinda liked them on the 1st listen itself :) listened to 'dhaam dhoom' only once so far. seemed a bit different from usual HJ songs :)

First review on
blogs doesn't seem favourable at all...

I liked the "Mozhu Mozhunnu" song though in the first hearing. I also liked "Palanadhu" and "Happy new year".
I am having my fingers crossed more towards "Aadhi".. so will "wait and watch".

Balaji,
Yes, the "Gilli" team of Dharani-Vijay-Trisha-Vidyasagar is back! You could always enjoy Dharani movies for time pass. He is the best commercial director in Tamil cinema who ensures that there is never a dull moment in his movies and one who understands the pulse of the audience :)Kuruvi songs are nice and catchy in the first listening itself as compared to Dasavatharam where the songs were a big let down :( Mozhu Mozhunu is all set to become the next "Appadi podu"! I'm sure that Kuruvi will fly high at BO especially with Dharani being at the helm but it will be instersting to see how far it could fly once Dasavatharam is out!

balaji, waiting for your review on Kuruvi :-) It will take a while for me to see it as we dont have simultaneous release in Pune.Normaly Vijay movies release after a month or so....last time ATM was released in 5 multiplexes....It didnt fare well.So not sure about this time.

Bart:That review is not surprising.Check out his review for Shivaji.IMHO reviewer and people's thoughts rarely match on masala movies.

I am sure that this film will do very well in the box office. This is gonna be a sure hit. While looking at the trailer it seems to be a perfect masala for the Vijay fans. One thing the film will be missing badly is Prakash Raj, Suman can never fill in PR's shoes. I was very disappointed with his performance in Sivaji. And now he features in this movie gives the movie a shaky start.

BB,

Most of the reviews for Kuruvi seems to be unfavourable. I am very disappointed. Being a bigtime Vijay fan, I was really counting on this one to pull him out of the ATM slump.

Please post your 2 cents worth.. I may go see this movie today if I get even one favourable comment!

bart, I'm guessing that'll be the trend :)

stranger, not sure it'll fly much even b4 'dasavatharam' :)

anon, review should be up monday as always :)

abimanyu, not sure how much even prakashraj could've done with that role :)

skanda, haven't seen 'chatrapathi' but didn't like it even when i thot it was original :)

anon, wouldn't say "very good". I'd go with "better" :)

kay, wouldn't call myself a 'bigtime' Vijay fan but its thumbs down from me :)

Thanks Bb. So the wait helped me watch "Iron Man" instead. Very much worth a watch. Double thumbsup.. Kuruvi should fly in Kalaignar TV soon. Will catch it flying there.

Chatrapathi itself wasn't that good. I did not like the way Prabhas's characterisation was elevated to a very-high level.Donno why Dharani thot of lifting the second half from it.(Heard Kuruvi's 2nd half resembles even Blood Diamond.)

Watched kuruvi y'day at the same theater where I'd watched Sivaji's first show. I was surpirsed to see the crowd y'day. For sivaji only 5 or 6 rows were full but for Kuruvi only first three rows were empty. Lots of families with kids. We can surely say Kids loves whatever Vijay does on the screen. Kuruvi is not Ghilli but it is definetly not another ATM or Aathi. I guess it will do well at box office it is likeable by his fans which was not the case with ATM and Aathi.

Kuruvi sucks... big time. Everything abt the film is irritating. Trisha looks too old in this movie. Abt vijay... I wish he would sink in some Siberian sea if he ever intends to do another movie like this. I would prefer sittin on the Chennai roads in mid noon rather than watch it. I want an ice bag...
