Billa-2007 Photos
After Dasaavathaaram, the movie whose stills I was most looking forward to was undoubtedly Billa. While Dasaavathaaram atleast had those publicity stills released when the movie was launched, Billa, as far as I can recall, did not even have those (all the news items about the eagerly-anticipated movie have the same photo of Ajith, taken when he attended the launch). The lack of photos as the movie’s release neared (the latest news has the movie’s release date as Nov 30 but I think that is quite suspect since even the audio hasn’t been released yet) was surprising. But we finally got a peek at the film through some official photos released last week.
Ajith, in a slightly different hairstyle, looks good and stylish and the photos do suggest that style will play a big part in the film’s makeup. My biggest complaint about the photos though is that they look too ‘generic’. In other words, there’s nothing in them to identify the film as a remake of Rajni's Billa. Unlike the early stills of Shah Rukh’s Don, there are no photos of Ajith dancing to the updated Naattukkulla Enakkoru… or My Name is Billa… or Vethalaiya Pottendi…; there's no photo of whatever’s gonna take the place of the all-important red diary; and there's no photo of Ajith and Nayanthara together in the film. So the photos don’t invoke nostalgia about the original and seem just like photos from any other Ajith-starrer.
The most pleasant surprise from the photos is Nayanthara (the most unpleasant surprise is probably Namitha, who seems to have gotten plumpier than before). When I wrote about possible candidates for the different roles when the movie was first announced, I eliminated Nayanthara from the heroine’s role since it was more action-packed than your average heroine’s role and I felt she was too plump for it. But she has really slimmed down admirably (surprising, since our heroines usually go the other way!) and looks fit and ready for an action role. How she'll look executing those karate chops and kicks is something we'll know only after the movie releases but as far as her physical appearance goes, she looks perfect for the role.
Looking at the other photos, Helen’s role seems to have gone to a newcomer Rose. So I guess Namitha is playing the villain’s moll(played by Isha Koppikar in Don) who exposes the fake Billa. One photo has Prabhu and Rahman but it looks like they’re playing cops (maybe the officer who hires the fake Billa and the Interpol officer?). So I’m still not sure who is playing the all-important role played by ‘Thengai’ Srinivasan in the original and by Arjun Rampal in Don.

The all black outfits, cool shades, strapped on armoury etc tend to impress the gloss & floss ... dunno if that's enough to carry a lantern to the classic that was Billa / Don (AB's orginal).
billa a classic !! shocked to hear this.. :)
don was ofcourse !
Don't you mean Arjun Rampal instead of Milind ?
And yeah, Namitha looks totally plump, would have been great if Pooja or Reema Sen accepted.
Ajith looks robust. Namitha more so. She is definitely on a "roll". And Nayanthara is definitely stacked. With weapons, I mean :) One wonders if regular cops have access to the kind of firepower she is lugging around. I certainly hope they don't abuse those awful slo-mo shots.
I fear it is too stylish for tamil audience.
Nativity has to be there
Hey.. Have a story to share, without worrying about revealing urself ?.. Tell it to the virtual world... let the world know your story but not your identity. :) http://www.project71.com/readme Enjoyy!
From the photos, i must say Nayan looked more the commando than Ajith. He may have lost weight but his face does not reflect that. It does not look like he can powerfully portray a man who lives life on a razor's edge. Its too soft :)
Ajith doesnt look good in the dancing stills in front of Lord Muruga, if u've seen it.
From the stills, me wonder if they might rip off some hollywood movie like casino royale. can't quite shake that feeling off. But the other guy was right billa is no classic. it had lots of energy though.
ajith looks dashing in his suit and nayantara looks hot in her black dress...i hope vishnuvardhan does a good job of modernizing billa.
i remember billa as one of those 80s masala movies that was entertaining at that time but feels incredibly dated now...i would pick a few of rajni's masala movies from the 80s - padikaathavan, naan sigappu manidhan and velaikaaran, to name a few - that i like on repeated viewings but to me, billa is enjoyable only when u rewind ur mind back to the 80s...
//dunno if that's enough to carry a lantern to the classic that was Billa / Don (AB's orginal).//
To me Don(1978) was like a B-Grade action stuff with great acting by Amitabh,by no means even a memorable film. But Don(2006) was extremely incredible with the climax turning out to be shocking.
I hope Vishnuvardhan too does something like what Farhan Akhtar did in Hindi.
Ajith looks like is gaining weight for this role.. Namitha looks so fat.. Vijay would have suited Billa's role perfectly..
BB, Did you feel the earthquake last night @ 8 PM ?
Moondru Mugam's Alex Pandian Character should be made in to a new film..
Of course, Super Star should don the role again..
Subbiah
when u talk abt BILLA the international DON looks only ajith is apt for this role . he looks dashing in suit with his new curly hair style . Other actors of his age are already bald .
Old Billa had lost of Stupid scenes
Rajini spraying water on policeman 's face to escape . everyone jumping in air like spiderman for the dairy .
BILLA 2007 will be more stylish when u ve guys like vishnu ,ajith, yuvan,
anon, i'll be happy with a stylish entertainer. not looking for a classic :)
prin, thanx. corrected it :)
anon, "Nayanthara is definitely stacked. With weapons, I mean" - good one :)
and considering vishnu vardhan's last couple of films, i think he's gonna be ok with using slo-mo shots correctly :)
anon, we get too many movies with nativity. wouldnt mind one with too much style :)
indira, nicely said. lets see if his performance makes us overlook his soft face :)
anon, no, havent seen any other stills. any links?
anon, yes, 'billa' had lotsa energy and lets hope we get atleast some of it in the new one :)
ram, surprising. i'd say 'velaikkaaran' was more dated than 'billa' :)
ganesh, the climax was defly shocking but just didnt stand up to post-mortem. we may be better off without the twist unless vv makes some changes in the screenplay to make it more acceptable :)
anon, yep felt it pretty good :)
more on billa..

ajith has a soft face.. I dont think so .. thought agree on his voice that he seems to be working oflate. even in the stills his expressive face is able to depict that DON image.
almost all tamil magazines have come up with special stories.. right from av, kumudam and kungumam to hindu and deccan chornicle..
the hype is something quite unusual for an ajith film and the stills have vishnu's touch and
balaji -- those are not a regular ajith film stills
and if we have a look at the remade billa now... we can have a good laugh.. it has many stupid scenes as someone said..
only rajini and songs were the saving grace.. compared to that thee was better..
