Ooh La La La

Tonight, Sun TV had the first episode(atleast, thats what it seemed like. I'm not sure since I did not watch Sun TV last Sunday) of Ooh La La La, a talent hunt show for Tamil music bands. It is being conducted by A.R.Rehman and the program seemed to offer something different from the usual cinema-based programs on Sun TV on quite a few counts.

I am genuinely surprised that there are so many indie music bands in TamilNadu. When it comes to Tamil music, I listen almost exclusively to film music. But seeing the number of bands vying for a chance on Ooh La La La, it looks like the non-film, pop music industry is pretty big in Tamil too. A pleasant surprise was that the bands sang their own compositions rather than existing film songs. That differentiated the program from other talent shows right off the bat. Though only small bits of the songs performed by the bands were shown, many were catchy and a good sign that they were all pretty talented. 18 bands were selected for the quarter-finals in today's program and it looks like the actual competition, with the bands singing on stage, will be shown from next week's program.

The selected bands got to meet ARR. Disappointingly, they barely showed what he spoke to them (in the little they showed, he spoke fully in English. Considering this was Sun TV and these were all Tamil bands, I'm not sure why he had to talk in English completely). Maybe he wanted to keep focus on the bands themselves. If that really was his idea then thats pretty good but it would've been nice to hear him speak too.

A top spot will bring the band good publicity, boost album sales and maybe even snag them a recording contract. Good luck to all the bands...

on the first episode rehman spoke a bit about the advantages of being in a band as opposed to being a musician for films. he said stuff like being in a band allows you to express your style rather than having to be confined to what a film director wants.

As much as this show is something new and fresh, it seems to me that its a desperate attempt by sun tv at trying to garner back the viewership that they lost to vijay tv during super singer and super singer junior. and sun tv has a knack for making some of its promising programmes very uninteresting by casting uncarismatic hosts ( Gowthami for anbudan) and having loud sets ( asatha povathu yaaru) to name a few.

i really hope they dont repeat the same here and get rehman involved as much as possible.

btw balaji have you caught super singer junior? its amazing how the little ones have so much talent.

This is indeed a whiff of fresh air from a rather dull Sun TV programs... I agree with Gayathri that Sun TV is trying something to get back viewership from the Vijay TV's Super Singer program..it was fortunate(for them and us) to rope in ARRAhman..
As I understand and Rahman mentioned in his intro of the program the winning band would be cutting an album with him..:)

SUNTV seems to have also gotten Revathi to do some movie analysis(some programme which I caught on Saturday evening). Maybe in response to Haasini's pesum padam in Jaya TV :-)
I think this Kalaignar TV might actually help in dusting the cobwebs off SUNTV's collective brain and hopefully force them to do something beyond those pathetic megaserials and other cliched stuff.

Oh...I enjoyed the program too very much. I really wish I can go back to being a teenager in Chennai. It seems like so much fun compared to how things were when I was growing up. A.R Rehman always talks too little in public..I think he is really very shy and an introvert :-)!

i barely watch Sun Tv even as there is nothing really intresting in ti. All the comedy scenes and songs have been repeated upteen time to the max.

i dunt want to go into the mega serials as it is pathetic. The movie selection is horrible and most old and best left forfotten movies. iks...

But as Malaysians, we have no choice, as it is one of the three indian channels we have. i just hope that Sun Tv would improve in the future. mybe this new 'program' is in the right step in the right direction!

gayatri, so looks like rahman did speak a bit more in the 1st episode. wish i'd caught that...

from ur comment, i'm guessing super singer jr. is on vijay tv? so no, i haven't seen any episodes of it since we have only sun tv here. b4 'ooh la la la', there was another program which had elders and kids singing. not sure what that one was :)

siva, though they always play catch-up, sun tv has always managed to rope in big guys. this time they truly got the biggest there is! that prize of cutting an album with rahman should be the greatest incentive for the bands!

vijay, didn't know about that though i did hear about suhasini's program(mainly cos everyone wrote about how she had criticized shriya in 'sivaji'). i used to be a fan of revathi. so i'll keep an eye out for this program :)

anon, yeah i think he is an introvert too. but was surprised that he stuck to english fully thats all :)

prin, no havent seen that one either :)

skanda, atleast u guys have 3 indian channels! here we're stuck with just one(unless we opt for a different satellite, i think)

hi balaji,

The selected band not only gets publicity. They are going to cut an album in A.R.Rahman's studio for the new music label started by ARR recently. ARR announced this in the first episode...
