Coming Soon - Kireedam

More than 1 month after Sivaji released, it looks like theaters are finally allowing other films to release and producers are finally gaining courage that their films wouldn't be swamped by the Sivaji wave and would find an audience too. Ajith's Kireedam was one of the films that was officially postponed to avoid clashing with Sivaji(it was originally supposed to release on May 1, Ajith's birthday). It is finally releasing this Friday and will be the first 'big' film to follow Sivaji.

Ajith is said to command the biggest and most loyal fan base after Rajnikanth. His fans have stuck with him through his lows and his films always command a great opening. But Ajith needs to give them something to cheer about. His Aazhwaar, released for Pongal, was a washout and was probably one of the biggest flops - both critically and commercially - of his career(the fact that Vijay's Pokkiri, released at the same time, went on to become a superhit made things even worse). So he must be banking on Kireedam to make his fans happy. Trisha is paired with him. Though their previous outing together, Ji, was a flop, they do make a cute pair. Rajkiran plays an important role as Ajith's father.

The film is based on Mohanlal's Malayalam film of the same name. That Kireedam was a realistic, emotional film about a father's dreams for his son and his pain on seeing those dreams come crashing down unexpectedly. Mohanlal and Thilakan gave powerhouse performances(I think Mohanlal won a special National award for his acting) and the film featured an unforgettable climax and a poignant last shot that spoke volumes. It is considered a classic. If the Tamil version doesn't pander to Ajith's image and captures the sentiments without exaggerating them, it could work well. Considering recent Ajith's films, that's a rather tall order and the big question is if it will achieve it.

Unfortunately, past remakes of other Malayalam classics don't inspire much confidence. The latest ofcourse was Chandramukhi, which rendered Manichitrathazhu almost unrecognizable by changing it to suit Rajni's image. But atleast it was a hit. The worst offender undoubtedly was P.Vasu's Seenu, that massacred Mohanlal's fantastic Bharatham. Starting with the cast, which had Karthik play Mohanlal's role and P.Vasu(shudder!) himself play Nedumudi Venu's role, everything in the film simply reminded us how much better the original was. Quite a few years before that came Satyaraj's Engirundho Vandhaan, a shabby remake of Mohanlal's comedy classic Chitram. So obviously, I'm hoping that Kireedam reverses this trend.

Helming Kireedam is a new director A.L.Vijay. Ajith has never shied away from giving chances to new directors and initially, that move paid him good dividends as directors like S.J.Suryah gave him hits like Vaali(personally, my favorite Ajith film). But the situation has reversed recently. Ajith's few hits in recent times have been delivered by old-timers like K.S.Ravikumar(Varalaaru, Villan) and Saran(Attagaasam) while new directors have delivered duds like Aazhwaar. Hopefully, this new director validates Ajith's faith in him. Veyyil-fame G.V.Prakash, A.R.Rahman's nephew, scores the music. The album is apparently doing good, which is a good sign. I love Vizhiyil..., which is a great melody and Kanavellaam... is a pretty good too.

Let's hope Kireedam turns out to be a crown jewel among Ajith's movies...

PS: Since we're going on a trip, I will probably not see Kireedam this weekend, though it is being screened in the Bay Area. I'm hoping to see it Monday or Tuesday evening though and so the review will not be online until the middle of next week.

bb, kireedom had the misfortune of being remade in Hindi and Telugu - in Hidni, while Amrish Puri did a decent job, Jackie Shroff tortured both himself and the audience with attempts at 'acting'.
In telugu, it was worse. I think you grew up in the eighties - so you must know of the Dr. Rajasekhar wave in the late 80's , where following the success of 'Idhu dhaanda Police', a series of his films from Telugu were dubbed into Tamil - I remember watching in amusement posters of such immortal titles as "Aambalai", "Pongada neeengalum unga arasiayalum" etc. One such title was "Evana Irundha Enakkenna". Beyond the usual chuckle and mirth for a moment, I had forgotten all about it until recently, I happened to catch it on Vijay TV. Know what, it's a pathetic remake of Kireedom!
I think it is reasonable to believe that Ajith would do better than these 2 atleast surely. As I observed before in the same comment space, he is good at angst.

Sandhya

Its Nice to see that Ajith has taken out the mass hero mask and acted in a good movie. Even all the ajith Fans were expecting this from him. Probably this may satisfy them and we may see Ajith back in action

i will be watching "kreedom" tonight. Sify has given it good reviews so i'm sure must be mind blowing. i'm really looking forward in watching these film after a long dry spell. Hopefully more tamil films are releasing after this.

Hey why do u say remake of classicmalayalam films were not succesful? Films like "Kathuluku mariyadhai", "Kasi", "Peralazhan" were succeful and still critically acclaimed.

Thala aniyum Kreedam.

History repeats. Vaali ran with Padayappa and became a SUPER HIT. Kreedam is going to run with Sivaji and will be a SUPER HIT.

The stills are inviting and Ajith looks DASHING.

Tempted to watch this weekend

i Balaji,

Saw the sify review. Sify is one of the most pathetic reviewers ever and so I can't judge the film on their review. Will wait for the general audience's review. Please do update ur blog about kireedom.

Eventhough I am fan of Ajith and I hope the Kreedom will do good at BO, I wont believe on the Sify review, Which is always pathetic.

I wish thala !

New comers have also given Ajith the pathetic "Unnai kodu ennai tharuven" and the nightmarish "Red"! Hope Vijay has learnt well from Priyadarshan.

different shades?!?!? ok if you find the comments to be so partial, fine then i have removed it. and if i wanted to hide myself, i very well could be anonymous LOL. but IMO good reviews from sify aint surprising with them being the official sponsors and i well am not at all sure on the part on biggest fan base after SS. perhaps i am wrong...

raj, 'gardish' i believe was the hindi film? didnt see it though. and i think i remember the dr.rajasekhar film very hazily.

skanda, those were all good movies. but i don't think any of them are considered classics in the same league as 'chitram', 'manichitrathazhu', 'bharatham' or 'kireedam'.

aravind, i don't know about anoop's past history on other forums but his comment here seemed fine.

anoop, u can go ahead and repost ur original comments if u want to. i didn't see anything wrong with them.

my comment about ajith's fans was based just on articles i've read on other sites. they always rate him next to rajni and his large fan base isthe reason his is called the 'king of opening'.

At 10:40 PM, Blogger Directhit said...

oh thx balaji.. I have anyways put my opinion jus rephrasing it.. .. mm regd King of Opening i guess its always been a case in Chennai city, so perhaps within chennai yes, whole of TN mm i really am not sure.

as for Kreedom, IMO the issue is that the movie came loooong back and lots of movies have come *inspired* from it. Dharani has been a master of similar story lines and infact Dhill was almost a similar story track except the deep family sentiments ofcourse. I even found the climax of Dhill similar to Malayalam Kreedom. So hopefully they did something differently in Ajith's kreedom. Wud come out with review after seeing the movie.

Srivatsan, pretty happy illai.. relieved and boundlessly elated is more like it! :-)

I'm one of those die-hard thala fans, who has stood by him through his many roller coaster rides over the years. It gives me distinct pleasure to see a good review for his film (could care less if it was from Sify, Rediff, AV, Kumudam or The Hindu!)..

This, Billa and Jr. Thala in '08 should keep things exciting for Thala fans for sure! :-)

Dont beleive Sify reviews..its not surprising that htey gave a good review as the film.....

Just came back from the film ... The movie was average...not so good as Sify termed it to be ...

The first was good ....the second was too slow for my liking ....people were beginning to be restless in the theatre in the second half....

and last but not the least the Villain was a big joke...Dont know for what he is in the film and dont know what he does ...he is a total waste...he comes for arnd only 10-15 mins in the film...pathetic...

Ajith as usual is good . rajkiran is brilliant ....

Average film....not super hit material n def not flop material ...Averageeeeeee

I liked Priyadarshans GARDISH! It's one of Jackie Shroff's finer performance, but the real show stealer here was Amrish Puri in a fantastic performance.

Im a huge fan of Raj Kiran now, so keen to catch KIREEDAM! The first few reviews have all praised the film and Ajith/Raj Kiran's performances.

@Anoops,
Anoops, I agree with you on Sify review. They even praise worthless film as Paisa VAsool just coz they are official partners for that film

But why should Indiaglitz, behindwoods, tamilfilmratings etc give a positve review ? If the producers go on adding online partners, the entire budget would have been spent on partners

Reg KING OF OPENING : This title was given to him by Hindu and not just by sify, behindwoods. He is indeed a king of opening. Even his worst films get tremendous opening at the box office. Both in chennai and all over the world. You should have a VISIT to the TN local theatres and should feel it. Atmosphere will be just next to Kamal and Rajini.

I agree with you on the Kireedom story. Many of our directors have already ILLEGALLY COPIED the film in many angles. Dharani being the primary culprit. His dhil was inspired from that and he will now realise that someone has indeed BROUGHT THE ORIGINAL. He added enough masala to that and created his own version similar to a remix.

P.S: Please do have a visit to India atleast once for a FDFS and u will feel the difference. Media is yet another thing u should avoid if u are interested to know the REAL FACTS

Watched the movie yesterday. Through family entertainer. A classic indeed. I don't term this as classic just coz it lacks punch dialogues, kuthu dance etc ! That is one of the worst laws that are applied to judge a film.

But this film is more EMOTIONAL and PRETTY MUCH NATURAL ! We are moving to an era where people seem to forget NORMAL CHARACTERS & ACTING and appreciate only EXTRA-TERRESTIAL & ARTIFICIAL characters. The characters shown nowadays are pretty unnatural and quite raw in their making. You need to dig enough to find such roles in real life.

But Ajith & Rajkiran's ACTING & ROLE is pretty NATURAL ACTING. Ajith overtakes Rajkiran in the climax. Rajkiran leads the first half ! Ajith underplays and exudes in important scenes and steals ! This is not a THALA film but it is an ajith film.

Ajith has improved a lot in Body language. It is his FACE that acts and expresses / emotes well. Thanks to vijay for coming out of the usual masala routine and delivering a CLASSIC
My rating would be 3*

@ - Anon or a great fan of Ajith

to start with, its been jus over a year since i moved out of chennai and i sure am aware of FDFS activities of all stars and have gone to all stars' FDFS movies LOL ... i am not at all saying Ajith is the King of Opening in CHENNAI as Hindu and others point out... but i seriously doubt on its credibility outside chennai where in it wont be proper to say ajith is next to rajini in that .. in my opinion Kamal has a huge fan base and so does Vijayakanth (even before his arrival into politics) thx for those event updates etc.

Regd Kreedom and Ajith as next Lal of Tamil Cinema, no comments. Mohanlal is one of the best actors of Indian Cinema alongside Kamal, Amitabh & Mammooty. We do have other wonderful character artistes along with this list. To compare ajith alongside any of them is cruel to their calibre. And again if you have any Lal fan saying that Ajith has lived upto that original character in Malayalam, then I sure doubt if he is sure a Lal fan or not. IMO, no one other than Kamal perhaps would have been able to do justice to that character's subtle portrayal.

And the original movie had a GREAAAAAAAT villain and from what I heard from many people who saw the Tamil version already, the villain is a big minus in the movie. And with many such movies already in like Dhill etc, wish that the director took some pains to do some more justice to a classic movie and even more worse is claims that its just inspiration and not a remake etc etc... sounds so similar to that P.Vasu's ridiculous claims that Chandramukhi is his story .... OTOH, Ajith with his mass fan following should be congratulated for not asking for too much of masala additions etc into the story. But I feel that either he chose a wrong movie to remake or a wrong director to enthrust this into. Kreedom would have been a classic in tamil also with Ajith himself but with a more talented director perhaps

i have "Kreedom" to be similiar to Hari's debut "tamizh". the storyline is bout the same about a youth whose dreamz come crashing down after an encounter with the rowdies.

Looks like many director have borrowed the setup from "the original and made different versions of the film. Even Ajith's "Anjeneya" in the first half looked very similiar.

I am a true and hardcore Ajith fan. But on seeing Ajith's KIREEDAM and the malayalam KIREEDOM ,I found Ajith's performance not at all upto the mark.Mohanlal gave life into his role which Ajith coudn't. Mohanlal was fabulous. He is a great actor. Looking forward to watch the other movies that Balaji has mentioned.
