Coming Soon - Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram

I've always felt that the second film is the most important film - even more so than the first - for an actor who delivered a hit with his debut. It is the film that proves that the first hit was no fluke and that the actor is here to stay. If that is indeed the case, Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram is an important film for Dhanush since the film is his second film after the recent turnaround in his fortunes. After some financial issues, the movie is releasing tomorrow and he will be awaiting its release with bated breath.

Dhanush's famous father-in-law's shadow hovers over PEAS quite prominently. The most obvious link ofcourse is the fact that Parattai is one of the most famous of Rajni's characters. That was the name of the villain who everyone loved to hate in 16 Vayadhinile and its impossible for anyone to not associate the name with Rajni. Also, the film is a remake of Kannada superhit Jogi and it was Rajni who apparently urged Dhanush to do the film after watching the original. Then there's the fact that the director of PEAS is Suresh Krishna, who gave Rajni 3 of his best and most successful films. His track record recently has not been so good (he was behind both Aalavandhaan and Baba) since then but Annamalai, Baasha and Veera ensure that he will always be remembered as one of Rajni's best directors.

On paper, PEAS's story - atleast the little I know of it - offers a lot of opportunities for romance, comedy, action and sentiments. It is apparently about a villager who moves to the city and becomes a dreaded don (I'm guessing that the villager's name is Azhagu Sundaram and he takes the name Parattai after becoming the don). The ever-popular 'mother sentiment' is supposed to be high on the film's agenda since the villager is very attached to his mother and his mom later comes to the city looking for him.

Considering its a masala film, the film has an impressive cast. Two national award winners join Dhanush with Archana playing his mother and Meera Jasmine playing the heroine. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja but I haven't read any reviews of the soundtrack, even by huge Yuvan fans like Filbert.

With Sivaji's release nearing, other producers are postponing the release of their films so as not clash with that film (Ajith's Kireedam is once such film). But PEAS is releasing tomorrow and will have three weeks without any other high-profile releases, even if Sivaji does release on May 17. With the birth of his son Yathra and the huge success of Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam, the year has started well for Dhanush. Lets see if he continues his good run with PEAS...

Though Yuvan was signed to compose music for this music, looks like when the directors changed, Suresh Krishna merely wanted to just reuse the tunes from the Kannada original. So, the music for this movie is by Gurukiran who scored the music for the original - Jogi .If there is a new album from Yuvan, there definitely will be a review from my end :)

Suresh Krishna is a director with as many highs and lows as his co-KB disciple Vasanth...

His Aaha...(though most of the praise for the movie has to be laid at the feet of Crazy Mohan, Bhanupriya and Raghuvaran) is my favorite film from his oeuvre. his next film after baasha was the dreadful sivasakthi and that alone must be enuf to tell u how unpredictable he is! but he's got style, visual flair and an eye for comedy...all of this will help in a masala film...

so, I think PEAS is in safe hands...

my Punch Dialogue for Simbhu in his next film, "Dey, nee paratta thala mudi vechaa periya manushan-nu nenaikara...aana, producer thalaiya mazha mazha-nu mottai adichaalum naan periya manushan..."

Tag line: Kettavan; he knows how to spend.

filbert, didn't know that story about the MD. but now understand why there was no review from u :)

ram, scary part is that suresh krishna hasn't had any highs since that time with rajni. 2 high profile flops and i think he had a big flop in telugu also. hope he regains his touch with PEAS...

loved the tagline :)

Balaji, Suresh Krishna has few more 'recent' flops to his credit. "Gajendra" with Vijayakanth and then "Rocky" with Zayed Khan in Hindi.
The original "Jogi" was a big hit in Kannada but the Telugu version "Yogi" was a flop. So, fingers crossed on this movie. (actually tilting downwards)...

I heard Jogi was the first Kannada film to cross the 'Rs. 15 crore' mark.(Made around Rs.17 crores.)
But,do not expect so much from the film,I warn you.
Its an action-sentimental('Ammma' sentiment.) film.It worked well because violence was slightly subdued and more room was given to
sentiment.
Its Telugu version Yogi flopped because the director V.V.Vinayak (Who made some good action movies like Tagore,Aadhi,Bunny.)indulged too much in violence and glamour, which made it look like an
ordinary action film.(My friend in Hyderabad saw Yogi.)
Same problem is with Suresh Krishna too.Unlike Annamalai,Baasha,Master(Telugu),where sentiments were dealt well;his recent movies had him being too rawly violent, thus ignoring the basic storyline.(Like in Baba,Astram;a Telugu film and Rocky,a Hindi film.)
So,be cautious.

Dhanush looks like playing a similiar role to what he did in "Puthupettei". he looks completely unsuitable to play a rowdy role.

i have no faith in suresh krishna after what he did in "Baba". i still cant believe it is the same director of "baasha" . But i do admire these guy, he definetly has the luck. despite so many flops, producers all over india still want him to direct.

May be Chennai 600028 does not have big stars, but I feel it would be a dark horse, releasing the same day as Parattai.

Also venkat Prabhu has a good comic sense which I think can be trusted.

KP, yes. I was seeing some chat show today morning (on release date) in Raj Tv with Venkat Prabhu and I certainly feel chennai-68 would be a movie to watch out for. No big storyline, but could be fun for cricket lovers (especially tennis ball and street cricket guyz).
Titbit from Venkat: Punchline thats already famous from the chennai - 68: "Saroja, saamaan nikaalo" :) (this is used in Vijay Tv's "kalakka povadhu yaaru - part 3" as an opening line too). In "Mudhalvan" a Setji is made to vacate the housing unit flat by the one-day mudhalvar, Arjun. Setji says "Saroja, Saamaan nikalo" to his wife...

bart, u r wrong. mudhalvan-la the saet ji says, "susmaa, saara saaman nikaalo...hum sowcarpet jaayenge!" its susmaa, not saroja!!! Kaalangaarthaala Naatuku Vendiya Nalla Vishyam Elaam Solliten...Ennode Naall Prakaasam-aa Irukum!!! ;-)

As for the flops,he had a few hits after Baasha-Dharmachakra(Venkatesh as hero),Aaha(Tamil) and Master.(Telugu film with Chiranjeevi as hero.)
After Master and Baasha,he has a long and probably an unending list of flops in Telugu and Tamil:
1.Auto Driver(1998 with Nagarjuna in Telugu)
2.Oruvan
3.Sangamam(1999)
4.Daddy(With Chiranjeevi In Telugu)
5.Alavandhaan(2001)
6.Baba(2002)
7.Raghavendra(2003 In Telugu.)
8.Gajendra(2004)
9.Astram(2006 IN TELUGU)
10.Rocky(2006 In Hindi)
Surprised that he still got a chance to direct a movie.
Considering that,a director finds the going tough if he gets one flop and thrown out for ever if his next movie too flops.(In Telugu/Tamil film industry.)
That's why many directors who are there in the industry for a long time have a success rate of 70-80%.(Eg:K.S.Ravikumar,K.Raghavendra Rao,Bhagyaraj,S.P.Muthuraman,Shankar,V.V.Vinayak,and '0' flops for Rajamouli.)
As for Maniratnam,he produces his own films. So,he still survives with approx.50% success rate.
While those of 'top-heroes' is just around 40-60%.
Nowadays, not even one among the top 4(Vijay,Ajith,Vikram,Surya.)
has 50%+ success rate.

In Telugu,Prabhas has 'opening' power and thanks to the 'Pongal holiday week',Yogi made Rs.13 crores in first week itself, though it made almost nothing in next few weeks.
I don't think Dhanush has such power and as I've pointed out,if the things are not delivered properly,it's yet another disaster for Suresh Krishna.
As Skanda says, some better and well-built young hero should've been brought in.(Like Vishal.)

Hmmm.. the only thing that is a consolation (and at the same plane a huge disappointment watching Suresh Krishna's trials and travails since this time!)..

He directed an awesome film in 1997 called "Aaha" that people don't even remember now.. How sad!.. It didn't have big stars and was solely bolstered by Crazy Mohan's dialogues and an excellent screenplay by Suresh Krishna.

Hmmm.. Kaalam yaaraiyum paadaai paduththum.. paavam SK.. He deserves much better...

Sandya, you must pity him if all those 12 flops were good qual. ones.If it's bad,why to pity?
His better ones like Annamalai,Baasha,Aaha were hits, weren't they?
As for Venkat Prabhu,he may get a chance to direct an Ajith film.

YES GANESH AJITH's NEXT DIRECTOR WILL BE ONE AMONG VENKAT PRABHU OR SHANKAR . SHANKAR HAS TO WAIT TILL THE COMPLETETION OF BILLA 2007 WHICH HE S NOT WILLING TO.
LETS HOPE THALA DESNT GO FOR PERARASU OR SARAN KIND OF MASALA DIRECTORS DIRECTORS AGAIN

bart, yeah i knew he had a few more but couldnt name any off the top my head. thanx :)

skanda, yeah he is unsuitable to play a rowdy but the right director can make us overlook that. not sure SK can do that...
