Tamil into English

Saw Prashanth's Thagappansamy yesterday. It has Karunas and a couple of others trying to make us laugh but for me, the biggest laughs actually happened during the opening credits.

The stunt master for the film is somebody who goes by the name of 'அனல்' Arasu. Like all Tamil movies, the opening credits for this movie too listed people's names in English. As a result, his name became Anal Arasu! Poor guy's name has been changed to something that looks like the assumed name of a hero in a porn movie. Just goes to show that a little more thought should go into the literal conversion of Tamil words to English :)

if that was funny you should try reading the english subtitles on some movies. Hilarious.

That was very funny, bb! An actual interpretation of the word might have helped in this instance :)

The subtitles in Tamil movies are simply ridiculous!!! Hindi movies generally seem to have well-written subtitles.

By the way, please don't read galatta.com's reviews. They write spoilers in their reviews (using their "distinct" version of English) and don't even provide a warning to readers.

Balaji, LOL!!! and this reminds me of another incident from my childhood. I remember visiting the zoo in Vandalur and we came across a bakery there near the station. They meant it to be "Anu's Bakery" and it was a perfect name except that they missed the apostrophe sign after Anu :)

on the subject of sub-titles, the funniest one that I've seen is the one for "vetti veru vaasam..." the sub-title showed up as something like, "oh, my dear odoriferous shrub!"

If you guys thought subtitles in Tamil movies were bad, wait till you see some atrocious stuff on Hong Kong movies...and movie titles..esp my personal favourite of the moment "Happy Ding Dong".

Some real gems can be found at:

BB, I would like to share a similar incident that happened last year.. The wedding invitation read "My Brothel's Son" instead of "My Brother's Son"..
