Favorite Rajni Performances - V
Annamalai - Annamalai
It is easy to dismiss Annamalai as another of the movies from the later stage of Rajni's career, where the star eclipsed the actor. But the movie provides the perfect mix of the star and the actor, which is why it is my favorite Rajni film.
Rajni is mindblowing in a role that gives him a lot of opportunity to display a wide range of emotions. The innocence and naivete of the milkman in the first half is contrasted wonderfully with the maturity and seriousness of the industrialist, whose sole goal is revenge on Sarathbabu. Rajni displays his comic flair effortlessly in scenes with Kushboo, with laughs peaking in the Kadavule Kadavule... sequence (his expressions as the snake crawls over him are priceless - note particularly the yelp when it crawls down!). He bristles as only he can in the encounters with Vinu Chakravarthy and Sarathbabu when he delivers his challenges and is completely believable as an affectionate dad when he advises his daughter calmly but gets increasingly exasperated as she rebels against him.

Balaji,
With such a wide range of options it's really difficult to pick five. Annamalai is a great choice, though. One other movie where Rajini shows contrasting characters is Thillu Mullu. He really makes us feel that Indiran and Chandran are two different persons... poor Thengai.
my fav scene in Annamalai is the one where he goes to Sarat Babu's hows and throws the gauntlet at him and his family...the moment where he slaps his thigh after throwing the challenge shows what star power is all abt...
goshhh, i meant "house" !
Balaji-
One of my favorite Rajini movies is Annamalai, esp. the dialogue where to says- "Ashok, enakulla thoongitu irunkara singatha nee thatti ezhupite......"...
Birthday wishes to Thalaivar!
anon, yeah its difficult but thats part of the fun. and so many choices means my top 5 will be completely different from someone else's :)
ram, YES! and once he becomes an industrialist, he conveys the same with a classy brush of his moustache...
mitr, oh yeah! that scene always gives me goosebumps. quite a high as he turns and strides out in slo-mo :)
His exasperated outbursts with his daughter in the movie showed glimpses of his acting prowess which, unfortunately, has to most times, take a backseat to highten the star to shine. But then again, that's what maketh a star...
His Aarilirunthu Arabathuvarey (6 to 60) was another acknowledgement of his sheer acting chops...
Hi Balaji,
Am not against Rajini but Annamalai was one of the sickening movie of Rajini that i've watched . It's very irritating especially the "snake" scene. Rajini is a big NO for comedy !
enakku always the hotel scene..though i know it had star content than performance.
Anonymous..i think he is so good in comedy. one of the few actors we have in our industry with such excellent timing. watch tillu mullu, guru shisyan, mappilai..he has really amde us laugh
ella seri thala namma Batcha vaium Tilliu Mullu Indran Chandran naiyum vittutinga
Hi Vidhya ,
I can give you more numbers of comedy scenes which irritated me rather than made me laugh .. here goes the list:
1. Rajathi Raja
2. Siva
3. Athisaya Piravi
4. Pandian
5. Yejaman
6. Uzhaippali
7. Veera
8. Muthu
Since the irritation has outweight the humour, I strongly feel that Rajini sucks at comedy
