Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Pirates of the Caribbean 1 was one of the few movies I’ve enjoyed just for the performance of its lead actor. Sure it had some nice action and a very pretty heroine. But what elevated the movie from being just another action film was Johny Depp’s performance. His staggering movements, slurred speech and befuddled expressions together created a very memorable character in Captain Jack Sparrow and he simply carried the movie on his shoulders. I didn’t think it was possible but Johny Depp gets pushed to the background in Pirates of the Caribbean 2. And without him taking centrestage, the film has a tough time holding our attention.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 too has some great set pieces and action sequences. The group’s escape from the cannibals is chaotic but great fun and the sequences that feature the attack of the sea-monster Kraken are mindblowing. The long climax is non-stop action and brings in a lot of variety in terms of locations and props used. The sense of fun is never lost and all the fights feature moments that make us smile.

But separating these sequences are long patches marked by backstories, character development and even a little bonding. None of the characters introduced (or brought back) are as interesting as Captain Jack and they haven’t earned the emotional investment needed to make their stories interesting to us. It is in these places that Jack Sparrow is badly missed. He is not seen for long periods of time and even when he is around, he seems strangely subdued. He is just not as high-spirited as he was in the previous film and so is not as much fun.

But the film makes sure that everyone who sees it will be awaiting the next part eagerly. It brings in a new development that makes us curious about how it will play out, in the love story between Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. It also ends with a great cliffhanger (and brings back an interesting character from the first film) that promises even more action the next time around.

balaji, I loved the first part. As u said, it had a great performance by Depp, and his acting was mind blowing. It was defn one of the most memorable characterizations in Hollywood. Off late sequels have been proving to be not matchinf their original. Superman Returns was one of the biggest dissapoinments. And guess recent sequels might make people go to the theatres with no major expectations.
Talking abt Dead Man's Chest, one which after reading, mite make people think twice b4 seeing the movie. I can see wat a major dissapointment it was for u.

well, my thoughts abt the movie were, in order to bring in more action sequences, the storyline had been stretched with other characters..... if it had been crisper, wud hav been a gr8 watch.... n the cliffhanger ending, I had mixed feelings abt it!!

I don't know why, but I end up watching the sequel b4 the first movie in many cases. So for me, Dead Man's Chest was incredible just for the characters it brought alive on screen and ofcourse for Depp(on whom i've been smitten since Edward Scissorhands)

And then I saw Part1 and I realised why The Mr felt Part 2 wasn't upto standard. Agree with you, none of the characters match Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp made Cap Jack quirky yet endearing.
Thalaivar Depp Vazhga pallandu :D

I really loved the music by Klaus Badelt in part-1. since then, i have become a fan of his.

As far as Jack Sparrow being subtly sidelined; am reminded of some "cine snippet" once in Kumadam/Vikatan, that said, Vittalacharya, used to ask the actors to act for peanuts, and if they refuse, he would simply "knock their heads off" via the movie, and replace that with ghosts :-)) - what a nice tool to blackmail !!

prasanna, 'superman returns' wasnt a disappointment for me at all. but this one was...

kuttichuvaru, true. i think the middle movies in all trilogies have this problem. no real beginning or ending and lotsa new characters who will be used in the finale!

kumari, i think if i'd seen this first i might've enjoyed it more too. but after the high of depp's performance in the 1st one, this was a disappointment.

ram, manichirunga sir :) she's a cutie and looked dazzling though she's unmade-up and dirty most of the time :)

arvind, thats one clever director! but i'm pretty sure that wasnt the case here :)

I've been looking forward to the 2nd movie ever since I saw the ghastly monkey run away with an aztec coin after the credits on the very first one!

Even though Johnny Depp didn't have a whole lot of time in this one, I loved every moment of him in it...

I don't have anything to complain about. I'm just absolutely nuts about pirates of the caribbean, nothing could muddle my spirit and love for it =D! Can't wait for the 3rd one!
