Pokkiri Launched

So its official. Vijay's next film is a remake of Mahesh Babu's recent Telugu megahit Pokiri. After rumors of teaming up with S.J.Suryah(Puli), Perarasu's brother Muthuvagidu(Murasu) and Dharani's assistant(Thangam), Vijay ended up joining hands with Prabhu Deva, for whom this will be the first Tamil film(as director ofcourse) as well as the first masala film. The film was announced at a press meet yesterday. The Tamil version is keeping the same name as the Telugu original and Vijay is going to be paired up with his Sivakasi heroine Asin. The film is slated to be Vijay's Pongal 2007 release (does this mean it will go up against Sivaji and Dasaavathaaram?).

Is it just me or does this seem like a very low-key film launch? Considering Vijay's superstar status and the long gap since Aadhi, I was surprised at the soft launch for the film. Doesn't look like there were any other star invitees or even publicity stills. Even the photo accompanying the banner looks very ordinary and could have been plucked out of any of Vijay's recent films. Maybe all the big stuff is being reserved for the film's puja or official kick-off? But Asin looks very cute :)

Vijay's had mixed luck with Telugu remakes. Films like Gilli and Priyamaanavale were big hits while they've been balanced by flops like Aadhi. Now its upto Prabhu Deva to make Pokkiri join the former list...

I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the whole film played down till release time. PD did that for both his films in Telugu. Keepting it low reduces expectations and media hype. That worked in the favour of the recently released Pokiri.

Coming to PD, I loved the visuals in NVNV. But how far that film can be credited to PD is a guess. Let's see how Pokiri is...I must state though, when it comes to acting, Mahesh babu is way above Vijay. I would rate Mahesh babu one of the best in South India. Have you seen his Nijam? Lousy film, excellent acting by Mahesh. Maybe they changed Okkadu to change that style of intense acting Mahesh did. Let's see how Vijay fares:-)

I think Vijay was carefully waiting for a different chance to modify his movies, esp. the story, as his Tirumalai, Tirupachi, Sivakasi, Madurey and finally Aadhi were all stereo types. After shelving other thoughts on telugu remakes, i think the Prabhu Deva factor made Vijay choose Pokiri and of course since Trisha didn't do him the success in Aadhi, the top heroine Asin has now been roped in. Let's hope that there is less hype and more of a different story under PD's direction.

ram, yeah we got a double dose of her for diwali but nothing since. can't wait for godfather :)

mj, thanx for dropping by. almost all reviews i read for 'pokiri' were positive. they said it was very stylish. hope PD reproduces the magic :)

kajan, they'll probably try to keep it low-key but gonna be real difficult for a vijay movie.

i've seen a couple of mahesh babu films that were dubbed in tamil. but early ones. havent seen any of his recent ones. but reviews usually talked about him being handsome, stylish, etc. don't remember his emoting strengths being lauded :)

mitr, i'm hoping thats true and vijay selected PD since he would give a different touch. hope PD doesn't cramp his own style to try and deliver a 'vijay' film...

merino, knowing ur opinion of PD and vijay, that comment was expected :)

karthik, asin theevira rasigar pola iruke :)

i watched the movie in telugu - way too violent, probably more than aadhi

could not understand why its such a huge hit! the heroine was cute & the dialogues were clever. the twist was not such huge thing - maybe cuz some reviews gave it away

will have to see how the tamil version turns out to be :)

Priyamanavale was not a big hit as you claim.

It ran for about 50 days before being replaced by Friends.

Pokiri was a violent film. Not really different from Athanakkode (Aadhi). Not sure why Vijay would risk his career on a similar plot.
