Dumb and Dumber
I watched about 10 minutes of Sun TV's Thanga Vettai yesterday to see if there was any improvement in the quality of the program or the intelligence of its questions since my first glimpse of it. Sadly, there was no improvement. If possible, things actually seemed to have gotten worse.
The following is an actual exchange between host Ramya Krishnan and one of the participants, a college-going girl.
Ramya: What sport do you like?
Contestant: I like cricket.
Ramya: Do you like any other sports?
Contestant: Tennis.
Ramya: Oh. Then you should be able to answer this question...
Ramya: Which sport does Andre Agassi play?
Me: Huh?!
Embarassingly easy questions are OK isn't it really inept hosting to pretty much give the answer away with such leading questions?
PS: Yes the girl did answer correctly. Otherwise the post would've been titled 'Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest'!

this reminds me of the classic Crazy Mohan interview scenes (from his plays)...
jokes like "Ne-la aaramichu hru-la mudiyum" (as hint for the question, "Who was the first PM of India?") are still fresh in memory, while the Thanga Vaettai "creative heads" come up with their own brand of humor!

Totally agree with you.......If this is the rate at which some programs on SUN TV are featured, i can't imagine the aptitude level of folks who watch these programs...guess, one needs to think along the lines that this is made for folks who really have no general knowledge..
Personally, I feel "Thanga Vettai" has improved (if not in the logic and sensibility department), but definitely in Ramya Krishnan's shouting department. She has decreased it sizeably (the same could be said of her girth).. It looks like Ms. Krishnan/Mrs. Vamsi (whichever you prefer) has lost some weight from when she initially started on TV in TV :-)..
sick is jus not the word... beyond a certain level, it even ceases to be funny, its downright irritating... there is a round in which the children in the families answer some questions, and the moms help them... one question was "Jayasurya endha kai aatakkarar?", to which the mom gave a clue "keep left"! and the daughter went on to answer right handed... this brilliance from a girl doing her 8th std! gimme a break!
the program is not targetted at the intellectually inclined. It is probably targetted at the mega-serial watching B&C audience in Tamilnadu. further it is branded as a quiz cum game show...which means that the questions should be easy to a majority of the audience. i was surprised when they said that the show is a hit and they are planning regional versions in telugu and kannada. radhika is supposedly compering the telugu show herself.
prasanna, when u can get gold for answering really easy questions, its no wonder its popular...

kaps, true. but i wonder if the media is contributing to the dumbness with programs like this. i've seen even movie reviews saying thing like 'too confusing for the common man', etc.

tell me which programme in sun TV isnt :-) In the name of reviews they give out the entire stories along with the spoilers on a platter. Inept idiots.
Limit myself to just the movie programmes(not all of them though) and ragamalika on Jaya tv(numtv.com).

well the media is made up of laymen and targetted towards the lay men as well. Some of the reviews in Kumudam, AV are sheer garbage.
I wish we had some media/entertainment outlets that doesnt worry about the so-called B and C center audiences. Wishful thinking.
