Fizzling out?

So there's some hope for Tamil cinema after all :-) Sivakasi, after getting a huge opening and being accompanied by proclamations of being a megahit, has started slipping. According to Sify, "Nobody is able to explain this drastic 50 percent drop." Hmmm... I think I will be able to explain it!

For readers who stop reading comments after the first day or so, there were some interesting discussions about Vijay's box-office clout in the comments section of my review, with some neat and detailed trade facts provided by an anonymous commentor whose uncle is in the distribution business. Check it out. But more to the point of this post, I said in the comments that

"I can't imagine 'Sivakasi' becoming a hit. But if it does, then i will truly accept Vijay's superstardom and box-office standing..."

and

"I fully accept that the movie could go on to be a hit though personally I think its too early to judge if itll be a hit or not. When u have a top hero, the 1st few weeks go solely based on his appeal. Its the crowds after that that determine whether its a hit or not. Lets wait and see if 'Sivakasi' makes it."

Its feels good to be right :-)

bb,
you made my day :). Am happy about how much time/money/bandwidth I saved not seeing this movie :P. Are the other 2 doing any better? I don't think Bambara Kannale would, ellarum 15-20 mins mela thaangala'nu sollitaanga. So its defenitely out of question now.

Hi Balaji,

There is this case filed by the lawyers in tamil nadu stating that the sivakasi movie is making fun of lawyers (don't know where, atleast I can't think of any particular scene that does that). Maybe a reason for the sudden drop ?

Sangeetha.

Sangeetha: If thats true, there might be a sudden increase actually, people would see the movie out of curiousity.

Well Movies of stars like Vijay,Vikram and Surya will always take good opening, but their movies becoming a hit is truly based on the quality.

cheers,
Giri.

ranga, u're welcome :)

ram, oh yeah. 'sivakasi'-la asin irundha illa? :)

sangeetha, the lawyers didnt like the portrayal of bhaskar. he was called 'platform lawyer' and walked around in the lawyer dress while lawyers r supposed to wear that dress only inside the court premises. but not sure if that's affecting the movie's collections. the collection dropped cos its a bad movie, thats all :)

giri, yep exactly what i said in the other post. and in this case, the quality's missing :)

Where is Dharani when you need him? In this case, we are seeing quite a few 'so-called masala films' failing just because either there was nothing new or the masala just wasn't new enough.. We are missing the master of Masala in full form: Dhil, Dhool, Ghilli.. Anyone understand or speak Telugu here?.. then you must be looking forward to Bangaaram now.. That's the Pawan Kalyan film that Dharani is currently directing right now for A.M.Ratnam..

If it does well in Telugu, you can bet that either remake Vijay or remake Ravi will grab the rights immediately! :-)..

About Sivakasi faring poorly... YEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHH!.. But still, paavam Asin!.. The rains along with the quality of the films she acted in (even though I liked "Maja" a lot!) didn't work out in her favor.. I would be very very happy to see if she makes the cast of Kamal's Dasavatharam.. KSR-ARR-Kamal-Crazy "Huge Excitement" is a combo I wouldn't miss if I am a heroine in Tamil Cinema today.

sandya, i dont understand or speak telugu. but even i'm looking fwd to 'bangaaram'. just for the dharani magic...

and i read in kungumam that nayan's so busy that she had to pass on being a heroine in 'dasavatharam'!!

I guess you haven't read Suderman's review for Sivakasi. He is the (only) Sivakasi evangelist :-)
Vijay padamnale konjam neriya yosichuttu thaan paapen (exception bought gilli dvd), somehow cannot erase his early days image off my mind :-P

I guess that movies made by guys like Vijay are like sugary breakfast. You get to anticipate the food after sleeping for a while. Then when you do get to feed, you feel an immediate high. But then you are let down just as quickly and end up craving a huge lunch.

Good, atleast my wish(of Sivakasi flopping badly) has partly come true. Even masala movies can be made innovatively every time and not toeing the same formula. The likes of Perarasu and Vijay have to realize this.

Not quite sure of this because, Sivakasi was still in top in Sify's Box office report and they didn't any info of a drop there.
Certainly i too would be happy if it is only an average grosser!
But what is the movie which can take over now - any idea when "Thavamai Thavamirundhu" is releasing?

Cheran's film, "Thavamaai Thavamirundhu" was supposed to release this Friday, 11/18. But check out the rain causing havoc with the film release schedules.

munimma, lazygeek praised it too. as far as i'm concerned, thats 1 less blog to surf :) when someone trashes 'parineeeta' and praises 'sivakasi', our tastes r so different that i havent felt like reading any more on there :)

gopi, true in general. 'sivakasi' was just a bad movie but a bad vijay movie too :)

i thot TT was releasing this friday too. guess not...

the film may not be a super hit but the film is already a hit . and there r variety of reasons for the second week collections to go down . it may be bcoz of the heavy rains and here in tn almost all the areas is like living in a dam .

The after effects of the rains continue to haunt the Chennai box-office. Collections for the weekends have come down with Diwali films .

Still Vijay's Sivakasi is the clear number one at Chennai BO. At second place is Vikram's Majaawhich just managed to hold on. Ghajini continues to be at number three position and still holds on with 50-60 percent on weekends.

At fourth place is Garam Masala and at fifth place is Mammootty's Rajamanickam.

indiaglitz.com also reports tht sivakasi still holds the no.1 position in the box office ...

hindu is almost doin a pro-vijay stuff sayin tht vijay is the next superstar and vikram is the next kamal

http://www.hindu.com/2005/11/16/stories/2005111615400200.htm

read this ....

kumudam also reports tht sivaksi is the no.1 at the box-office .
anandha vikatan gives the highest mark for sivakasi(42) among diwali releases and says this movie is a diwali special atom bomb from vijay .

At 11:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Everything started with Mr. Balaji who himself writing reviews as if he is the best reviewer and called sivakasi is a flop..

who said so???????

only brainless vijay-haters will say sivakasi is a flop..
look at telugu movies, no story , no technics, but high grossers..
like Varsham collected more than 20++ crores..
Only Vijay or Rajni can do that kind of mass movies with huge collections in tamil..

So Mr.Balaji shut ur mouth and dont influence other ppl

sivaksi is still goin strong at he box-office and the reports say tht out of all the releases durin the past month only sivakasi is a safe bet
