Ego?

Ego: an exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit (Websters)

Ego: Subash Ghai naming his own Taal as one of the "finest Indian cinema has ever had to offer"

Sorry... I know that's sarcastic and rude but I couldn't get past the fact that a filmmaker has called his own film one of the best ever in history(and I'm not even talking about the quality of the chosen entry here). Does anyone do this? I mean, if Spielberg is asked to list the best films of all time, would he have Schindler's List on there?

I thought the same thing when I read this article earlier. And that too, not even his best movie.
Even that wouldn't go into the all time top ten. But then, he had HHHK and KKHH in there. There were so many good directors, couldn't he think of none? Hrishikesh Mukherjee, to name one.

It could be ego or could be supreme self-confidence (which is ego really?) I lean towards conceit.

But this quality is typically Indian ;-P

I am just curious what the other directors will say (as that article promises)

I suppose some Directors cannot let their work speak for themselves :) I am sure a Maniratnam or a KB would not talk about their films that way. They know their films are (usually) great pieces of work and they know that people know that. You could say the same thing about a Spielberg or a Cameron (how much did Schindler's List and Titanic gross worldwide?).

I dont know why rediff chose to interview Subhash Ghai for his choice.. I have never considered him a good director.. to me, he was a below-average, mediocre one.. His Kisna was unbearable.. Pardes was an off-shoot from DDLJ.. Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, etc. used a cliched and boring mother sentiment to the limit..

Unlike in the south, there were not many to come from film institute.. he was one.. so i think that worked to his advantage and he used it nicely..

Speaking of ego, AjithKumar should be listed in the dictionary as conceited beep beep beep.

considering that he is such a pompous self-promoting blowhard, i guess we can be relieved that he named only one of his films in the list.

i've had informal chats with quite a few celebrities like vikram, suriya, vasanth, parthiban, shankar and SNEHA (pics displayed, with humility, at www.geocities.com/ram_aishoo/pics.html)
of the lot, the most unassuming ones have been Vikram (casual and relaxed!), Suriya (BORRRING though!!) and Sneha (she's such a darling!!!) and Crazy Mohan (not really "crazy" in person but entertaining conversationalist)...

now, should i be talking about conceit :))

munimma, IMO he selected commercial movies like KKHH and HAHK simply so that he could squeeze in Taal without feeling guilty!

gopi, well said. and the question on gross was a rhetorical question wasnt it?

gp, i have no problem with rediff choosing him. good or bad, he has a good track record when it comes to commercial success and has been around for a long time. i even liked many of his movies till taal. i was just surprised by his placing his own movie among the 10 all-time best movies in history!

merino, i second that :-)

vc, "pompous self-promoting blowhard" wish i'd come up with that :-) and your relief is very funny.

ram, podhum podhum!

Tell me about it!!! Such a cheap conceited bastard!!! And look at his choice of movies, yuck!!!! Firstly, he was asked about INDIAN movies, not hindi movies... And the buggar has completely forgotten that ours is a country that has languages by the dozen... and even if he is restricting himself to Hindi movies, he couldnt list ones like "Do aankhen baarah haath", "Do bheega zamin" etc.. he could only spot HAHK, KKHH and above all Taal!!! Ivana ellam nikka vechu suttu kollanum!

Lol merino! Mr Ajithkumar, aka "thala" (god knows who christened him... avane panni iruppan) sets new standards in blowing his own trumpet every time!!! When it comes to irritating the hell out of me, even lizards dont come anywhere close to him!
