Odds and Ends

- Took a look at the Mumbai Express official website today. It has all the basics down correct but maybe because it is a Kamal movie, the site itself left me a little disappointed as far as novelty or uniqueness is concerned. The way the cast is introduced is neat but the other parts of the site are strictly average. On the positive side, we finally get to hear a bit of one of Ilaiyaraja's numbers.

PS: Thats now three news items on Kamal without anything on Rajni or Chandramukhi. Impressive huh?!

- Coke's next ad has Aamir in a dual role - as a snobbish NRI on a bride hunt and as a very Indian bhabhi in the same household that he is looking for his wife in. Aamir looks hilariously feminine as the bhabhi and the ad itself has an interesting storyline.

- Ram Gopal Varma's next film Sarkar stars Big B and li'l B! It has Amitabh as a politician and Abishek as one of his two sons. Company was a phenomenal film on the underworld and if Sarkar contains a similar look at Indian politics, it will be movie to remember.

- Chennai's Satyam theatre now apparently has a play lounge for children. So mom and dad can catch a movie while their kid enjoys herself in the lounge. Seems like a nice concept on paper but would it work, especially in our society where parents are extremely protective of their kids? I for one can't imagine leaving my daughter with strangers. I wouldn't be able to enjoy the film since I'd be worrying about how she's doing! And wonder what they'd do if a kid started crying and wanted to see his/her parents. Walk around a darkened theatre trying to locate them?! Would be nice to get some stats on the success of the lounge...

I too think the "Mumbai Xpress" site is competently, if not extraordinarily, done...Raj Kamal's site for "Hey! Ram" was one of the earliest and one of the best 'official' ones for Tamil movies...was professional n on par with any Hollywood movie site...this one's more 'desi!' reg. "Chandramukhi" I am sure bbthots will turn into a rabid fanatic's unofficial site once its "showtime" (Apr 14)...in the meanwhile, I will hope n pray for the Xpress to zoom ahead...!

hey bj,

being the diehard ramu fan that I am, I am feeling conflicted abt ‘sarkar’ - the reason being I really dislike big b

and judging by the promos, big b looks completely out of place in a ramu film - but the crime/drama is a ramu specialty, so I am sure he will not disappoint

and being a ramu film afterall, I will see the film minimum 10 times in theatres - 20 times if it remains in theatres past the first week!!... the same goes for ‘D’

but anyways ‘sarkar’ will not be releasing for a few months - right now I am much more excited abt ramu’s ‘D’, it’s the prequel to ‘company’ - and the promos look incredible - ‘D’ releases May 6, make sure to see it in theatres guys!!!

and btw guys, check out the promos if you have not already…

I too remember 'Hey Ram' as being the first official site for a Tamil movie and being very impressed with it. Maybe my high expectations for Kamal movie sites arose from that!

vic, i was wondering why i had never heard of 'D'. Now i think i may have heard of it but not paid much attention as it was a varma production and not directed by him. After 'vaastu shaastra' i don't have high hopes for his productions. But u're right... the promo looks cool. lotsa shades of 'Company' though...

‘lotsa shades of 'Company' though...’

ya definitely, since it’s the prequel this is to be to expected…

and I heard the training was intense for randeep (the guy who is playing young malik)

he actually went through voice coaching so he could emulate ajay’s voice… and you can see it was successful based on his last line of dialogue from the promo

though I disagree w/ you abt ramu’s productions - imo ramu’s 3 masterpieces - ‘shool’, ‘mmdbch’, ‘ab tak 56’ - were all his productions and not his directed films

‘After 'vaastu shaastra' i don't have high hopes for his productions’

I think its unfair to judge ramu based on his horror films, this is after all his only weakness - from ‘raatri’ to ‘deyyam’ to ‘bhoot’ to ‘darna mana hai’ and finally to ‘vaastu shastra’ - they have all been equally horrible, whether he has directed them or not

havent seen any of the 3 movies u mention as masterpieces... i know ab tak chappan is on netflix. definitely planning to give it a try. but out of his horror films, I liked 'bhoot' and really liked 'darna mana hai' except for the ending.

that’s cool that you like his horror films

there was one story in ‘darna mana hai’ that I really liked - the one with raghu yadav - that story freaked me out!

raghu yadav is an incredible actor - its really a shame that ramu does not use him more often - though he did use him again in ‘gayab’

btw which stories in DMH did you like?? just curious

as for ‘bhoot’, though I didn’t like the film, I thought nana was awesome in his brief role

oh and btw, I hope you will post your thoughts on ‘ab tak 56’ after you have finished watching it, its really an incredible film… ‘He who fights monsters must take care that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze into the void, the void gazes also into you.’ - Nietzsche, beyond good and evil - aphorism 146

the synopsis from the ‘mumbai express’ site sounds like its going to be a heist film

there are also 11 cast members, and kamal’s character is a criminal who can’t stay outta trouble (a la cloony in ‘O11’)

is this supposed to be a ‘O11’ remake?? either way I am looking forward to this

btw, in terms of best official film sites - my vote would go to ‘ab tak 56’-click for the site

though it is definitely not the most impressive site you have seen, it’s the features which push it over the top

it comes with the history of the mumbai underworld - just to give some historical background to the film, though most of it is common knowledge (esp if you have lived in mumbai) it is still good to see a site which goes beyond the usual - cast, crew, synopsis, downloads…

it also had a history of the mumbai police - encounter cops, corruption cases - but for some reason they took it off from the site - I wonder why?

but the best part is AT56 game, it is loads of fun! every time you encounter a gangster, nana says one of his famous one liners from the film! I remember I used to play it at work and every time nana said one of his one-liners people used to look towards my desk - like what the hell is this guy doing : ) - btw, the site also has the option to download the game onto your phone!

and I am curious to see the ‘hey ram’ site now that you guys are talking abt it

I can’t seem to find it though, anyone have a link??

In DMH, I liked both the vivek oberoi/nana episode and the 'freeze episode'.

the 'hey ram' site was actually the first site I featured in the 'Links' section on my reviews site. That was in March 2000. But I checked today and the site no longer exists. Looks like the domain registration's probably expired!
