52nd South Filmfare Awards Show

The 52nd South Filmfare Awards program was telecast on Sun TV yesterday. Since there are no real multistarrers in Tamil, such award programs are the next best thing since they allow us to see a number of stars in the same place at the same time. And the Filmfare awards are the most popular among such shows. No Rajni or Kamal but it was a star-studded event with actors from all 4 South Indian languages making an appearance.

It was a good program overall. The stage decorations were relatively tastefully done with a huge mask in the back signifying the 'masquerade' theme of the show. The dances were well-choreographed without any obvious lack of synchronization though the group dancers all seemed to be dancing in their underwear! And there didn't seem to be any goof-ups in the actual awards presentations.

The program started with a behind-the-scenes segment. This was a nice touch since it allowed us to have a glimpse of the amount of work that goes into organizing a show on such a large scale. The only bad aspect was that you had to see Sadha without makeup during her rehearsals :-)

Probably in the interest of time, the speeches given by most artistes was cut and replaced with personal interviews. The questions were lame and repetitive and very few stars managed to rise above the questions and make their answers interesting.

And now on to some awards for the show itself...

Best looking actresses - Jyothika and Trisha

Actor bearing most resemblance to someone else - Sarathkumar, who with mottai and dark sunglasses, looked like Rakesh Roshan.

Most Disappointing Speech - Vivek, who had some funny stuff to say about the statuette but couldn't convey it well in English

Most surprising transformation - Kiran, who has thinned down quite unbelievably

Best dancer - Rahasya

Worst dancer - Ramya (her Bharatanatyam, during her tribute to Soundarya, was horrible)

Best old woman trying to look like a young woman - Rekha (the Hindi actress)

Best old woman looking like a young woman - Trisha's mom

Lowest hip saree - Katrina Kaif

Best Nandhi - The unidentifiable woman who sat between Surya and Jyothika

Best 'Cycle Gap' comment - Surya offering special thanks to Jo "without whom his Best Actor award wouldn't have been possible" (guess the director and the rest of the unit had nothing to do with it!)

(thankfully) I missed this. everybody seems to be talking about the compere...and I also read somewhere that he is a Singaporean guy. Is he Ananda Kannan who comes on K TV?

Looks like u hv a soft corner for Trisha's family....maybe u should prepare another post on trisha's drunken behaviour to dispell such rumours.

Dancer Ramya - is this Kuthu Ramya or Ramya Kannan.

Yeah Kaps it is the oh-so-irritating Ananda kannan only!! He is jus intolerable!

And the dancer wasnt Ramya Krishnan... the other one...

BB, Trisha mattum illama, ava ammava kooda sight adikkareengala??;-) Agree with u abt Vivek's speech... it was rather sad!

yep, was planning to blog about the same. So Surya and Vivek both mentioned Jo's name in connection with former. does that mean this is a public announcement?

Who thought Ramya could do B'natyam!!!!

At least the MCs spoke tolerable tamil :-)

I recorded it since I saw it in bits and pieces. Will need to look again at the Nandhi. Could it have been his sis?

You forgot Maddy with his long hair :-)

Kiran did seem like she lost her enormous thoppai.

Bharadwaj's wife was more impressed with being on tv than getting the award :-)

There was another girl sitting in the front that the cam zoomed to often. Couldn't recognize her!

Chiru's daughters were sitting next to him?

man I was tryna stay awake so I can watch Ragasiya dance for "theepidikka" and I couldnt, I gave up and went to sleep.. (I gotten back from my night duty just then).

the fotos i saw on the web had different comperers. so i guess as anon and arjuna mentioned, sun tv made them compere separately and then edited them in. they were pretty pathetic but in hindsight, it can't be easy compering a non-existent show for an invisible audience :) i guess sun tv did a good job since me(and a few commenters i see) weren't able to notice it!

kaps/nithya, edho unbiaseda oru observation panna udane soft corner/sight aagiduma? my sight reserved only for jo :) those awards i gave were just observations ;)

My whole family love the handsome Anandha Kannan for his witty interviews in Sun Music. Thousand and thousand viewers (children, elderlies, professionals etc.,) like his compere in SunMusic.

He is helping Chennai Tamilians viewers to use many forgotten Tamil words such as ‘Illathu Arasi’ for ‘housewife’ & ‘kaitholai pesi’ for ‘cell phone’.

He has been rated as one of the best compere (for Radio as well) by many magazines and newspapers. He also the hero in ‘Sindupath’ serials which is shown on Sundays only.

It's sad to see negative remarks made about him by negative tasteless peoples. Learn to see the 'half full'.

I was very upset and angry to read the following defamatory remarks made by 'Marino I. C.' about Anandha Kannan. Could someone let me know how to reach this person and the person belongs to this blog.
Thanks.

Ananda Kannan — His take on fame

The following was published in New Indian Express on 7.7.2005.

CHENNAI: It is as much his style with accessories as with words that
have made Ananda Kannan one of the popular VJs in the less-than-a-
year-old Sun Music channel, which is increasingly emerging as a fun
hang-out spot on TV.

Be it his daily ``Ellam Unakaga'' or his 11.30 am Sunday special, it
is riotsville all right. Typical comments include, ``Which dog did
you give your head to?'' when he sported a new hairstyle. Another
viewer called up, wanting him to get rid of that `cockroach' on his
face — a reference to his miniscule beard.

But it is not all scandalously cheeky all the time. A mother of two
sons said the happiest hour for her entire family is when he is on
air, since her two mentally challenged sons, aged 21 and 24, enjoy
it.

``I don't care if I am clown as long as I make some people happy,''
says Ananda.

Today, his hair is platinum bleach, and with a deadpan face he
confesses that he has two stylists. One to tend to his top and the
other to his facial hair!

The next moment he surprises you by saying that he tends to ponder
most of the time. In fact, it was to find the answers to questions
like, ``What is life? What is sex? What is money?'' that he came to
India from Singapore.

Armed with a professional degree, he had every intention of majoring
in Indian folklore, something that's lost in today's, but got
diverted by the `performer bug'.

His entry was the regular database shift, before he progressed to
more `exciting' work. His `Hai kutties' was something he enjoyed.
Between shoots, he takes time to learn salsa, Bharathanatyam and
traditional drums. Whatever for? He plans to present a one-hour
dance programme sometime this year.

``I am selective about what I do,'' he says. Currently, he is
directing a health documentary for a friend. Having directed a short
film called `Toy' with friends, which won a German award, he gained
confidence, he says.

``Actually, I attended a workshop run by an Israeli and it helped me
understand that one has to work for one's own satisfaction. After
all, if you are not there for two days, people will forget you. Such
is fame.''

Does it not bother him ? ``Oh! I have plenty of ideas, including
taking folklore to a global audience,'' he replies.

Just ignore the insulting words of ignorant peoples.

It is sad to hear people comment in such negative ways about a talented person. Just because he dresses in different ways, it doesn't give people the right to insult him this way. I think he is doing a good job, and I think he speaks good tamil too. If you can't praise good work, then please don't say anything. Even to judge someone else, you need qualifications of your own.

Mr/Ms Anonymous,
I can see from your comment that you are VERY VERY weak in chemistry. I wonder how old you are, because your comment is very old. Neruppu illamai puhai varum! Go take some introductory classes in chemistry! Athu mathiri thaan, truth illamaiyum gossips varum. I don't know how old you are, but if you are talking about this then let me assume you are at least 18, please act your age; and get a life!
