Top 10 and Bottom 10 - 2005
The Top-10 and Bottom-1o lists - my picks for the 10 best and worst films of the year - for 2005 are online in the Views section of bbreviews. It was always pretty clear that 2005 was a pretty bad year for Tamil cinema. But it wasn't clear just how bad until I tried to come up with these lists. It was pretty tough coming up with both the lists but for completely different reasons.
The choices were just too many for the 'Worst Films of the Year' list and even 10 seemed to be too restrictive. This was a year where films like the irritating A Aa, the confused Oru Naal Oru Kanavu and the illogical Oru Kallooriyin Kadhai were not even in the running for the worst 10 films of the year!
On the other hand, I had to struggle to come up with 10 films that could be called the best of the year. While I liked Kanaa Kanden when I saw it in May, I didn't for a moment think that it would wind up as one of the 10 best films I would see last year. But it eventually did. Thats how slim the pickings were for the Top-10 list.

i m totally shocked to see arindhum ariyamalum is not included.It has the most fresh concept in the Dada genre
Kadhal better than Thavamaai????... As much as you decide these top 10s based on when you see them and you saw "Kaadhal" only in 2005.. even though it was released in December 2004.. it still seems awfully strange to see it at the number 1 spot for 2005.. I questioned Rediff's decision in including Kaadhal as one of the top films of 2005.. but in yours, I question how Kaadhal could be better than TT by any measure of anyone's imagination..
No Arindhum Ariyaamalum, but you've included Anniyan??????... Was AA really that bad enough to not make it into the top 10 where Ghajini and Anniyan made it?..
The hardest thing for me to digest is saying that "Kanaa Kandaen" actually made it to the top then. KK is one of the finest films of the year (not perfect or classic!).. but definitely one of the finest.. I wouldn't doubt that it would belong in the top 10 easily probably even as number 6 or 7 and not as low as number 10. After all, in a time of showcasing lazy heroes, underachievers, mass macho hero.. the hero in Kanaa Kandaen was the biggest reason to rally behind the film.. he was educated, smart and working on a water desalination project.. added to that was Prithviraj, in a role of a polished villain.. I don't think you could have asked for a better film and a better set of characters..

Good list.. I had missed only two of the 10 Best and seen only two of the 10 worst.. so not bad..
mm.. I guess if you had best 11, the 11th would have been Arindhum.. It lost the top 10 to some god competition..
One general remark while rating the 'worst': You watch almost all tamil movies, similar to how an ardent fan would watch even a West Indies vs Bangladesh match.. (I tend to compare most things with cricket.. hehe). So, when you come up with 10 worst, most of them wouldnt even be heard to an average cine-goer.. So, it would probably be better if you use a 2-tier system.. a movie has to have 'some attraction' atleast to come to the top tier.. similar to what has been suggested in cricket, to make it interesting.
It is true that once a while, good movies do come out of literally nowhere.. (Kannadi Pookkal would be one example but it had Parthiban, 'a potential for good films'-guy, and similarly 'Kasthurimaan'). These movies are equivalent cricket upsets when Bangladesh defeats Aus on a blue-moon.. doesnt mean that Bangladesh is better than or even in the same league as Aus..
In your 'bottom 10' list, only Iyer IPS (Star value-Satyaraj), Jaisurya (Star value-Arjun) had something for an average-movie goer. had you filtered the rest with the 2-tier system, then you would have been able to put the 'genuinely low movies' like Ah AAh, ONOK, Oru kalluriyin kathai, Sukhran, etc. which, despite having potential and proven match-winners, ended up as duds..

what an uninspiring set of movies!! not blaming u, just saying that when u compare ur list with the year 2000 (which I think was a fantabulous year for "classy" cinema -- my fav. Rhythm, Mugavari, Sethu, Hey Ram...wowww!) and u have 2005 -phew!!! even in 2004, when i came up with my top ten, there were only 3 that i thought were "great" in every sense of the word-- Autograph, Kudaikkull Mazhai and Azhagiye Theeye...think abt this-- Pongal, New Year's, Diwali; indha 3 major festivals which have prestigious releases-- at least two high-quality pics illaati epdi?! remember somebody telling me how at the fag end of 1985, the movies that were released were Mudhal Mariyaadhai, Sindhu Bhairavi, Chinna Veedu (Not "classy" by any defn but memorable in terms of humor) and the evergreen comedy classic, Aan paavam...aana, ipo?!!!! :((
nav, for me AA just didn't have an impact. I liked it but a li'l less than the films that made the list thats all :)
sandhya, 'kaadhal' defly rates higher than TT for me. 'kaadhal' had a visceral impact of the kind i've rarely experienced. rarely has a movie made me forget that it was a movie. my review should've made it clear i loved TT but 'kaadhal's impact was something very different. it had an edge. if i try to come up with a list of the best movies of the last 10 yrs or so, 'kaadhal' would probably figure in there...
AA was not a bad movie by any means. 2.5 stars usually means i did like the movie. but barring the twist, i just felt it was very unspectacular. if i ranked all movies of the year, it would probably be #12 or #13.
and i know 'anniyan' has its share of detractors but for me, it was the best entertainer of the yr. i loved the larger-than-life settings, the grandeur, the pacing, the elaborate staging of sequences, the comedy and vikram's acting :)
all u say about KK is true. but then again, we can list out some positives for most movies right? it the negatives that bring the movie down. and for KK there were the uninspired song sequences, the shortness of the third act and biggest of all, the crudeness at several places.
Ironically, Vijay movies are not there in your list (both). In your songs list also, it was not there, even your list is quite long. I am not a big fan of Vijay..not even a viewer of his films..seeing some repeated formula..
His movies are irritating and giving a illusion that they were big hits..only thirupatchi have a good BO (Sify's data)..still in tamilnadu, all media making him as next superstar..how it would be like that..his father is doing lot of advertisement on him..
Something I felt..
1. Whatever may be, Vijay's film always in top of SUN TV's top 10, after 70 days..Example Sivakasi..still in #1
2. Every month, one week edition of Kungumam will have news of Vijay's latest films in cover story..
3. You can see lot of hoardings for Aathi all over Chennai Sponsored by Sunfeast biscuit, Relaince, Jeyachandran Textiles etc..
I able to understand that most of the people get irritated about his films..if he followed same stereotyped formulae.

balaji, i comepletely agree with raju. unlike you most people do not get to watch more than half the movies that you listed on the bottom 10. such movies do not get released in singapore not even as thiruttu VCD. could you please do another bottom 10 of the movies that people would have at least heard of?
As always, a good top 10 list. Though money(BO and its influence on the producers) talks most of the time, I have hope with directors like Balaji Shaktivel, Ameer, Bala and all those who are gutsy enough to come out with neat and sensible movies.
