Lechi Pothaama?

First it was Trisha. Then Dharani. And now Vikram! Vikram is close to signing on to do an original Telugu film following the success of Aparichithudu, the dubbed version of Anniyan, which has apparently done better business than recent films of Venkatesh, Chiranjeevi, etc.

Due to the similarity of the themes, styles, actor-driven film culture, etc., actresses from Tamil have been able to adapt easily to the Telugu film world. And the higher pay in Telugu films naturally smooths their way. Actresses like Sridevi, Simran, etc. were able to reach the top in both Kollywood and Tollywood and Trisha seems to be doing the same now. As far as I can remember, Divya Bharathi was one actress who was introduced in Tamil but failed to make it big and went on to become the numero uno in Telugu.

Dharani's move to Telugu is a big loss. Easily the best commercial director out there today, I was eagerly looking forward to his next film. So now I'm just hoping that his Telugu film with Pawan Kalyan is a one-off thing(I was hoping for the same thing when Manirathnam went Telugu for Gitanjali and thankfully, my wish came true!). We need more Dhills, Dhools and Gillis! And not only has Dharani gone to Telugu, he has also taken Nila, S.J.Suryah's new heroine, along with him!

With similar superstar-driven movies in both languages, I don't think its possible for an actor to split his time between Tamil and Telugu on a regular basis. Rajni has done many Telugu movies early in his career and Kamal still does the occasional one. Looking the other way, Chiranjeevi played the villain in an old Rajni flick but Nagarjuna was the only one who attempted a straight Tamil movie recently. And we all know what happened there!

Would the success of his Telugu film(and the naturally heftier subsequent paychecks) tempt Vikram enough to shift his base to Hyderabad? I hope not...

I am not sure about Trish or Dharani but I am pretty sure that Vikram will stick to Tamil for the most part. My guess is that he is following in Kamal's footsteps. He is not as young as a Vijay and if he ever turns to directing/producing, having an audience outside of TN will help (as it does for Kamal). While guys like Vijay stick to the action character role on screen, Vikram has already displayed his versatility as an actor by having played a variety of roles. I would say that making a movie in Telugu would be laying the foundation for some sort of future transition for Vikram.

That title took me to our 2nd year in college :-)

Vikram has apparently signed one in Hindi too, or is planning to. So may be he is just experimenting with his versatility and I am sure his feet are stuck fast to tamil soil.

BTW, did you finish?

Here's what Trisha had to say about her latest Telugu film on V. Day, this year:

Trisha : Hey guys n girls, Happy Valentine’s Day…am actually shooting for a Telugu film, “Noo Mazhaiyil Nanaya Nuvve Priyamesu” It’s coming out well….am playing a role that I’ve never played before…it’s a cute character…that of a Brahmin girl who gets drenched in the rain on Feb 14th and falls in love with the hero Junior Chandrababu Naidu…ooh, what an uncanny coincidence…Love you all…Sweet Dreams...all night and all day, folks… (full name: Trisha Krishnan; Native language: Tamil; Nickname: Peter Pankajagammall)

gopi, my question came up in part cos vikram mentioned somewhere that he had some loyalty to telugu(or was it malayalam?) since they supported him by giving him some roles when he was down and out on his luck. but yours is an interesting take. i was thinking about just the financial aspect :)

munimma, i remember reading that. that he was gonna do a movie with the Big B. but nothing on that since then...

It is easier for heroines and technicians to succeed in other languages. But for heroes, success hardly comes in other languages. I doubt whether Vikram should take this risk...

BTW.. Do you mean 'Raanuva Veeran' in which Chiranjeevi acted as villain?

Nagarjuna.. in straight tamil movie.. ?? I doubt.. which one are you talking about? As far as I know, Idhayathai thirudathe, Udhayam, avasara police are dubbed movies... anything else? (even the recent nagarjaun-prabhudeva-shreya starrer was a telugu movie dubbed into tamil!!!)

packer, i hope so too. but if the movie becomes a blockbuster, then producers will be ready to pay a huge amt to dharani for the next 1. hope he can resist that.

btw, i thot pawan's last few movies were flops?

vijay seems to have decided to do only remakes after gilli. his movie 'mass' is also a telugu remake.

ram, LOL

v, good catch, esp. vijayashanthi. still remember her playing rajni's sis in netrikkann!

packer, looks like selvaraghavan's tollywood name is shri raghava? and he's directing venky's next film? i thot he was already making a movie with dhanush and sonia...

aruvi, someone was wondering in an earlier post too about trisha having mallu background. u cleared it up :)

zero, interesting info. but our heroines went to malaayalam i thot after being over the hill. i always thot it was only the successful heroines in tamil or telugu who gave the other language a shot. i remember rambha, meena, amala, etc. all going to telugu when they were going strong in tamil too.

I just think Telugu movies employ a lot more female artists than required for movie. For example, in Tamil, there would be a main actress for singing melodies and romancing the hero; and then there would be this "item" who would be thrown in for masala. There is no such distinction in Telugu. All heroines are "items". And they would have a minimum of 3 such ones in a movie. I am not joking, any given movie would have 3 or 4 heroines of the past as well as present. And to top it all, they have lot of money. (psst.. Did you know that the Hyderabad film city is even bigger, I don't know if its in money or size though, than Hollywood?)

While Vikram was dubbing for tamil films, he was already a small actor (small refers to the roles he did, for example, like one of the three sons in a family and father is the hero of the film!).

When you are not a big star, it is only natural that you act in as many films as you can to show your talents, or earn more money etc.

Now he is going to do a straight picture in Telugu. Surely he is a big star of tamil films and most of his hit tamil films have been remade or even dubbed in to telugu.

I am sure that he has a bright future ahead if only he chooses his films judiciously!
