Lechi Pothaama?

First it was Trisha. Then Dharani. And now Vikram! Vikram is close to signing on to do an original Telugu film following the success of Aparichithudu, the dubbed version of Anniyan, which has apparently done better business than recent films of Venkatesh, Chiranjeevi, etc.

Due to the similarity of the themes, styles, actor-driven film culture, etc., actresses from Tamil have been able to adapt easily to the Telugu film world. And the higher pay in Telugu films naturally smooths their way. Actresses like Sridevi, Simran, etc. were able to reach the top in both Kollywood and Tollywood and Trisha seems to be doing the same now. As far as I can remember, Divya Bharathi was one actress who was introduced in Tamil but failed to make it big and went on to become the numero uno in Telugu.

Dharani's move to Telugu is a big loss. Easily the best commercial director out there today, I was eagerly looking forward to his next film. So now I'm just hoping that his Telugu film with Pawan Kalyan is a one-off thing(I was hoping for the same thing when Manirathnam went Telugu for Gitanjali and thankfully, my wish came true!). We need more Dhills, Dhools and Gillis! And not only has Dharani gone to Telugu, he has also taken Nila, S.J.Suryah's new heroine, along with him!

With similar superstar-driven movies in both languages, I don't think its possible for an actor to split his time between Tamil and Telugu on a regular basis. Rajni has done many Telugu movies early in his career and Kamal still does the occasional one. Looking the other way, Chiranjeevi played the villain in an old Rajni flick but Nagarjuna was the only one who attempted a straight Tamil movie recently. And we all know what happened there!

Would the success of his Telugu film(and the naturally heftier subsequent paychecks) tempt Vikram enough to shift his base to Hyderabad? I hope not...

I am not sure about Trish or Dharani but I am pretty sure that Vikram will stick to Tamil for the most part. My guess is that he is following in Kamal's footsteps. He is not as young as a Vijay and if he ever turns to directing/producing, having an audience outside of TN will help (as it does for Kamal). While guys like Vijay stick to the action character role on screen, Vikram has already displayed his versatility as an actor by having played a variety of roles. I would say that making a movie in Telugu would be laying the foundation for some sort of future transition for Vikram.

That title took me to our 2nd year in college :-)

Vikram has apparently signed one in Hindi too, or is planning to. So may be he is just experimenting with his versatility and I am sure his feet are stuck fast to tamil soil.

BTW, did you finish?

Dharani might have accepted just for AM Ratnam(surya movies, Gilli)
who is producing this movie and this will be just one night stand.
Earlier AM Ratnam produced Kushi with pawan kalyan(Chiranjeevi's
younger brother) and it became a blockbuster and people have a
lot of craze for his movies and i am sure AM Ratnam gonna mint
money with this movie too. I think only trisha can mantain successful
image in both telugu and tamil but not actors or directors as you
mentioned. Watchout for trisha's next movie(athadu) as vijay is already
after the tamil rights for this action movie.

Here's what Trisha had to say about her latest Telugu film on V. Day, this year:

Trisha : Hey guys n girls, Happy Valentine’s Day…am actually shooting for a Telugu film, “Noo Mazhaiyil Nanaya Nuvve Priyamesu” It’s coming out well….am playing a role that I’ve never played before…it’s a cute character…that of a Brahmin girl who gets drenched in the rain on Feb 14th and falls in love with the hero Junior Chandrababu Naidu…ooh, what an uncanny coincidence…Love you all…Sweet Dreams...all night and all day, folks… (full name: Trisha Krishnan; Native language: Tamil; Nickname: Peter Pankajagammall)

gopi, my question came up in part cos vikram mentioned somewhere that he had some loyalty to telugu(or was it malayalam?) since they supported him by giving him some roles when he was down and out on his luck. but yours is an interesting take. i was thinking about just the financial aspect :)

munimma, i remember reading that. that he was gonna do a movie with the Big B. but nothing on that since then...

It is easier for heroines and technicians to succeed in other languages. But for heroes, success hardly comes in other languages. I doubt whether Vikram should take this risk...

BTW.. Do you mean 'Raanuva Veeran' in which Chiranjeevi acted as villain?

Nagarjuna.. in straight tamil movie.. ?? I doubt.. which one are you talking about? As far as I know, Idhayathai thirudathe, Udhayam, avasara police are dubbed movies... anything else? (even the recent nagarjaun-prabhudeva-shreya starrer was a telugu movie dubbed into tamil!!!)

packer, i hope so too. but if the movie becomes a blockbuster, then producers will be ready to pay a huge amt to dharani for the next 1. hope he can resist that.

btw, i thot pawan's last few movies were flops?

vijay seems to have decided to do only remakes after gilli. his movie 'mass' is also a telugu remake.

ram, LOL

v, good catch, esp. vijayashanthi. still remember her playing rajni's sis in netrikkann!

Balaji,
Yeah pavan's last 3 movies after
kushi are flops still all of them had decent openings due to his craze among students and his huge fan base.

I don't think Dharani is after money, he might be trying somthing new because the movie is based on his subject and it might be AM Ratnam's idea to make in telugu and cast pavan.

As for vijay I think his motive is
hold on to the mass image he has established. I am sure he is not versatile actor but atleast he can keep cash counters ringing most of the times wether it's remake or original.

Venkatesh new movie details : Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Story, screenplay and direction : Sri Raghava(7G B/C). Actress : Sonia Agarwal.

All this shifting and sorting will definitely be for short term.

First off, Trisha's native language is not Tamil. Her father is a mallu and mother is from/raised Mumbai, as per most reports, though I think Mother is also Palakkad like father. Most reasonable inference is that she is Mallu brought up in Chennai. And yes, she has been able to hold a successful inning in both languages, like Simran did( a bit better than Sim, actually) and I that's pretty good luck mixed with some nice work.

Coming to Vikram, I think, he was there in Telugu and Malayalam even before he became a big hit in Tamil. So I guess, in a sense, his loyalty should be there too, since they gave him financial security when noone in Tamil was looking at him. But as said, it is hard for a hero to hold a feet in two ships. And it's tougher for heros to come up in another industry. I am sure, Telugu's won't be that excepting of Tamil heros. Even Chandramukhi was pounced on because it was a huge hit at a time when Telugu films were flopping. My favourite film site is idlebrain.com, just for how good it is, if you want to see how crazy film fans can be, just check the Discussion Forum there.

Vijay,
Well, as ever, there is no real talent there. First daddy, then some good directors, and now, some good remakes. You can't compare him with Vikram. Plus, I doubt he would have any takers in other languages...I mean, Mallu audience like him b/c they will accept Tamil films that are entertaining, but if he did a straight mallu film, I doubt that would hold.

The general theory is that ppl go to telugu films occasionally for extra monetary benefits (commercial aspects of telugu movies were better than tamil films).. But it is said that the centre point of the south India has always been tamil film industry. It is said that even the likes of N T Rama Rao tried their hands, first, at tamil film indutry and after biting the dust because of the then newcomers like MGR and Sivaji had to pack their bags to Hyd. A superstar like Mammooty, had played any role he gets in his way, if it was in tamil. Add to this whole lotsa heroines who went full-fledged into telugu after they were aged and rejected in tamil; and even small actors like Sudhakar who still acts in telugu. I don't remember Vivek acting in telugu? But the 7G-RC comedy actor (forgot his name) does act in tamil. This seems that there is some more things involved, other than money, in choosing to do movies in other languages; and in that sense, ppl somehow (I wonder why) seems to prefer tamil.
Hence IMHO, anybody like Vikram reigning here will never like to leave the place.

balaji.. since it was taken in both the languauges by praveen kanth, i missed it. thanks

ram.. GayT Gunju's mallu polambal was too good.. anyhow, he is trying the waters with his son's dubbed movie.... whether he can make it or not, is within the audience power.

packer, looks like selvaraghavan's tollywood name is shri raghava? and he's directing venky's next film? i thot he was already making a movie with dhanush and sonia...

aruvi, someone was wondering in an earlier post too about trisha having mallu background. u cleared it up :)

zero, interesting info. but our heroines went to malaayalam i thot after being over the hill. i always thot it was only the successful heroines in tamil or telugu who gave the other language a shot. i remember rambha, meena, amala, etc. all going to telugu when they were going strong in tamil too.

I just think Telugu movies employ a lot more female artists than required for movie. For example, in Tamil, there would be a main actress for singing melodies and romancing the hero; and then there would be this "item" who would be thrown in for masala. There is no such distinction in Telugu. All heroines are "items". And they would have a minimum of 3 such ones in a movie. I am not joking, any given movie would have 3 or 4 heroines of the past as well as present. And to top it all, they have lot of money. (psst.. Did you know that the Hyderabad film city is even bigger, I don't know if its in money or size though, than Hollywood?)

While Vikram was dubbing for tamil films, he was already a small actor (small refers to the roles he did, for example, like one of the three sons in a family and father is the hero of the film!).

When you are not a big star, it is only natural that you act in as many films as you can to show your talents, or earn more money etc.

Now he is going to do a straight picture in Telugu. Surely he is a big star of tamil films and most of his hit tamil films have been remade or even dubbed in to telugu.

I am sure that he has a bright future ahead if only he chooses his films judiciously!
