Tamil cinema's original Kaadhal Mannan, Gemini Ganesan, passed away early Tuesday morning. May his soul rest in peace...

Damn! Well, he lived a good life...

From what I've seen of his earlier work, I dont think he was an actor of astonishing range or depth; he was what you would call a "capable" actor. But charisma-- now, that's something different! That and screen presence, he had aplenty. That he could reel off long passages of dialogue is evident in "Unaal Mudiyum Thambi," his last truly great dramatic role. Of course, he held a torch for Shanmugi Maami ("Avvai Shanmugi") in a way that would endlessly tickle our funny bone.
May his soul rest in peace...

I've always thought he had a good knack for comedy and that was proved in 'Avvai Shanmugi'. But his performance in 'Unnaal Mudiyum Thambi' was a surprise. He wore the strict, stubborn character very well and sparks flew during his arguments with Kamal.
