Romantic Simbhu

I read a couple of days ago that Simbhu had decided to act only in soft, romantic roles in 2009. Considering that his filmography so far is almost exclusively made up of action movies and his last 2 films, KaaLai and Silambaattam, were hardcore masala flicks that categorically telegraphed his intention to become the next Vijay, that decision came as a pleasant surprise. And it looks like it is a resolution he intends to keep.

Simbhu's next project is Poadaa Poadi, where he is paired up with Varalakshmi, Sarathkumar's daughter. Inspite of that coarse title, it is tipped to be a film about a young, newly-married couple and is to be shot fully in Canada. There is also a lot of buzz the last couple of days about his film ViNNai Thaandi Varuvaayaa, which was apparently advertised with some posters(one of which is seen above and the another recreated a scene from the song VeNNilave VeNNilave..., from which the title is borrowed) that had no information about the rest of the cast or the technical crew. Rumors suggest that the film will be directed by none other than Gautham Menon and will have music by A.R.Rehman. If that is true, it will definitely be an interesting combination since, based on the kind of movies he was doing, I was half-expecting a Perarasu-Srikanth Deva team-up for Simbhu's next movie! Finally, Simbhu's name is also being talked about for the remake of Bachna Ae Haseena, the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer that had him cheat three women and then try to make amends to them.

If I had been asked to name the young Tamil actors who were least likely to do 3 romantic films in a row, Simbhu would've been second on that list(Vijay, ofcourse, would've been first). With this move, he has definitely surprised me and because of that, has earned my grudging admiration.

bb, didn't you recognize which film this particular poster is based on?
here's the answer in vikatan style:
iruvar ullangall saerndhu vetri vaagai soodaamal irundha tharunathil vadakkey sendru uyirai koduthu, vaervai sindhi uzhaithu edutha maniyaana padam!

Simbhu's new list of films does look intresting...i was thinking that he was already on a downhill with "silambattan" but looks like he has realized that his career is not going anywhere with action based films. Wish Vijay would also realized that and do more romantic films which made him an endearing hero in the first place. Till today "Kadhaluku mariyadha" and "poovae unakaga" is way better than the "kuruvis" and "villus"

The pessimism in me still says, the romance will still be a chauvinistic (vallavan, manmadhan types) one.. Even then, better than chimpattam...

Thanks to Gowtham, the posters are not making any pretenses to trick the audiences with Two blatant lifts. This might be another Ego Tour where Gowtham would like to make a Tribute to the movies that inspired him by liberally borrowing from them. Add Chimp to it, he isn't One hundredth of an Actor that Surya is, which saved Varanam Ayiram's sagging Screenplay.
Lets not get deluded by having hopes for this film.

The fact that he wants to do romantic roles is perhaps one more evidently undeniable fact ... no matter what he tries, karaddi magan will always be a karaddi. In that spirit, may we wish him well... nevertheless half expecting him to mess that up too with his exaggerated swagger and self loathing attitude.

But lets hope the film gets ready to be shot and released on time. Both Simbhu and Gautham are known to take a very very long time in completing and then releaasing thier movies. Probably might release for Valentine next year, the earliest we can hope for...

Any hopes on SMS? (Siva manasula sakthi). Coming from Vikatan talkies, the trailor looks a bit promising. Looks like a Tamil "Hum Tum" but hope it is certainly better in content :)

Seems to me that the resemblance to older movie stills may be intentional. Look at another still from VV:

This one looks to be taken out of the "Vennilave vennilave.." song from Minsara Kanavu. I'm not sure what the idea behind this is, but it sure seems intentional.

BTW, look at the name of the producers... "Escape artists"!

ram, ofcourse. no way I could've missed the similarity :)

skanda, for vijay a string of romantic films failed and then 'tirumalai' made him take the masala route. have to wait and see what the fate of these romantic movies are :)

bart, simbhu's influence was strong in manmadhan, vallavan, etc. hope the directors have more of a say in the upcoming movies :)

anon, but gautham hasn't so far copied from other movies, has he? so the lifts might be limited to the posters :)

anon, i'm really hoping he limits the "exaggerated swagger and self loathing attitude"

sivajini, LOL. i guess u won't be lining up to see that movie :)

vijay, considering its simbhu, there were no expectations :)

bart, after 'thenaavattu', its gonna be a while b4 I'm excited about a jeeva movie :)

arun, yep, that was the one I wrote about in the post too :)

gautam's pachai kili mutucharam was in fact a remake of a hollywood movie sans the climax n the songs of course.he denied it and stated he adapted the story from a book.simbhu's last romantic movie was alai and it was torture cinema at its best.regarding the posters,i think its a delibrate attempt by gautam in copying the stills of alaipayuthe, dil se and minsara kanavu!hope we don get all 3 in diz 1 movie.imagine tr making a guest appearance as a terrorist or something!!

Simbu and Trisha walking for a Montage sequence flanked by Cameo appearances from TR and Gowtham.
Pa Vijay has already penned the lyrics

Evaru King Kong ke Appan da
Enga Appanuku Na Paiyan da // Simbu

En peru Tea 6
En ooru Seiyaru
Nan Kottai ku pona odum Palaru //TR

Dandanaka Damudakka // Gowtham

Eppadi iruntha Gowtham ippadi ayitaru. Seven and half confirm for Gowtham.
