Happy Birthday Rajnikanth!

Happy Birthday to Rajnikanth, Tamil cinema's one and only Superstar...

The mood of Rajni fans on this birthday can't be as good as their mood last year. Last December, we were still basking in the glory of Sivaji's success and celebrating thalaivar's State award for Best Actor for Chandramukhi. But 2008 has been a rather disappointing year with Rajni's lone release Kuselan turning out to be a flop and Rajni himself getting enmeshed in a couple of controversies. But with the first-of-a-kind animation film Sultan just around the corner and Shankar's big-budget, sci-fi extravaganza Endhiran waiting in the wings, good things are not too far ahead for us fans.

There's not enough time to do this blog's tradition of a list to celebrate thalaivar's bday. But I do plan to review one of his films to mark the day. The film, apart from being a quintessential Rajni film and one of my favorites, also has a name that accurately reflects Rajni's position in Tamil cinema.

Rajathi Raja?

Yes, thought of Rajathi Raja first, but guess it could be Mannan too.

Neither particularly one of Rajini's best, so still thinking what else it could be ...

And if it is Mannan, yes, definitely quintessential Rajini. How can one forget the amazing 'Onnu perisa, rendu perisa' bit?!

Sarcasm mode off :-)

True Balaji, not a great year for Thalaivar (and thus for his fans too). But this was also the year when Thalaivar met his fans after so many years. So, there definitely was something to cheer about.

And yeah, my guess is Mannan too :)

I read somewhere that Dec 12th should be called the World Style Day!! Not a bad idea, I say :))

my guess is mannan because bb has already reviewed baasha, thalapathi and sivaji for bbreviews...
i liked mannan a lot...i thought the movie had some terrific moments between rajni and vijayshanti, a sweet romance between rajni and kushbu, some terrific comedy (counder's antics at the chinnathambi function take the cake, the icing and the candles!) and some genuine sentiments (rajni's facial expressions while first presenting the wheel chair to pandari bai were memorable)...not to mention some great music...
to me the five minutes that dragged the movie down half a star was the "adikudhu kuliru" song...it was soooooooo inappropriate for the vijayshanti character...

it should be mullum malarum, bc that really accurately describes rajni's position in tamil cinema.

:-) :-) but true.

"also has a name that accurately reflects Rajni's position in Tamil cinema"

any Tamil movie titled "crappy" ?

Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai is my take. The title can aptly chronicle Rajini's role in tamil cinema for a good number of years.. He will be 60 next year right?

bart, bingo :)

anon, I said "my favorite" and not "best" :)

anon, that bit would probably not find a favorable mention in my review either :)

filbert, 'world style day'? interesting :)

veecee/blogeswari/jey, as ram said, those 3 movies have already been reviewed :)

ram, yep 'mannan' had all the ingredients that went into a good rajni movie :)

anon, interesting thot :)

srivatsan, week b4 india trip was incredibly busy. hence no post on andavar's bday. will correct that next yr :)

MLC, 'baasha' has been reviewed b4 too :)

vidhya, i think i prefer RR too :)

anon, LOL :)
