reg. dhanam, yes, i agree with u...the prostitute (like the rowdy) with a heart of gold character has been done to death...even though ammuvagiya naan had its flaws, the film was top-class in its handling of the lead character...she was portrayed as a human...her reaction to the "first night" with parthiban was one of the sharpest moments in the movie...also touching was the way she apologized to sadhana about not being able to tolerate mahadevan's sadistic gestures...
if u portray a character as a human- with all of his/her pluses and minuses- the gold in the heart will automatically come out...u dont have to try hard...i still cant forget the prostitute's comment to kamal in mahanadhi...it was sooooo sharp yet so realistic...

its such a shame that the director wasted cinematographer jeeva's time and talent for this movie...too bad that jeeva died before he could work on another 12b...instead had to spend his valuable and unbeknownst to him, limited time on this crap.

Alibaba certainly deserves the 3-star rating, Balaji. One of the better movies of the year, easily!!

"Alibaba" could have been a great film but it's spoiled by the performances of the lead couple..they just could not act at all...But overall it was pretty decent and the theme was quite intresting...But suprisingly it has flopped at the box office, probably if had a better soundtrack, it would have got noticed and got an opening!!!

ram, yes the 'first night' scene was a standout scene in VT. here most scenes stood out only because of their ridiculousness!

and not just jeeva. the film had some real good talent behind the screens :)

anon, my thots exactly :)

filbert, glad u liked it. we need more thrillers like it :)

skanda, i didnt think the leads were too bad. i thot they fit the roles. but u r right about the soundtrack. a better album and some more marketing might've helped :)

I think the rating for Alibaba is tad above expected. The link between lead pair doesn't gel at all especially after the heroine knows that the hero is a thief. Also "Radharavi and Thilakan playing familiar roles" spoils the suspense right away. The movie though neat has got half a star extra. This half a star can certainly be creadited to Saroja (I am biased here :)).
