Rajni & Kamal

Its always nice seeing Tamil cinema's 2 biggest stars together. Considered professional rivals at one point(oh, how many times I've participated in the Rajni vs Kamal debate in school and college!), they've been good friends for a while now, always praising and wishing the best for each other. The last couple of days have provided two opportunities for these two stars to share the stage...

First was the audio launch of Thottaal Poo Malarum, P.Vasu's film in which he is introducing his son Sakthi. Looks like Vasu shares a good rapport with both Rajni and Kamal(his friendship with Rajni is not a surprise considering he has directed him before and has just given him the biggest hit of his career in Chandramukhi but I don't think he has ever directed Kamal) since he managed to get the two stars to attend the launch of the film and now he got the two to participate in the audio release too. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who has just released a great album for Satham Podaathey.

The second function where they appeared together was the Chandramukhi success function, which was held since the film has now become the longest-running film in South India, having run for 804 days. Chief Minister Karunanidhi presided over the function while Kamal and K.Balachander were chief guests.

Dhanush and Aishwarya, and Sridevi, looking as gorgeous as ever, were among the guests. Jo's brother-in-law Karthi came to collect her trophy since Jo is ofcourse very pregnant now. The function was hosted by Sneha(who was apparently considered for Nayantara's role. I didn't know that). Looks like Rajni, as always, had a great speech sprinkled with anecdotes while the others obviously praised him to the skies. Can't wait for this one to be telecast on Sun TV...

Balaji,

Its not gonna be on Sun TV. If this programme would ever be telecast, it would be on Kalaingnar TV. Sun TV will soon find its nemesis !

wow, how funny that these two very plain looking men have ruled thamizh cinema for so long! it's funny how little vanity they have when they are not on screen.

R.I.P Jeeva - That's now TWO great contributers to Tamil cinema dead in a month - first G. Srinivasan (of Madras Talkies and Mani Ratnam's brother) and now him.

I woner what is gonna happen to Dhaam Dhoom - which looked fantastic - launching Bollywood's Kangana Ranaut in Tamil.....:)

Btw, Ganesh Kumar that source is biased considering its a Telugu source promoting Pokiri and all above Chandramukhi......

Yes Balaji, they are good friends and have great respect for each other. I remember Kamal telling in one of his interviews that there was a situation where fan clubs were fighting aggressively and it required one of them to speak with the other, make a statement and close the issue. Kamal was frank in admitting that he had ego issues and waited for Rajini to make the move. Rajini did and Kamal was bowled over by his simplicity.

How very unfortunate for Jeeva. He has just gotten a solid foothold in the industry and to pass away at a mere 43 years of age, leaving behind a wife and 3 children.. God has been to cruel..:-( :-(

Not to stamp on anybody's toes or ruffle any feathers, but 'good looking' is very relative to each individual. Our minds often plays games on us especially when (very early in life!) we start to distinguish between what we describe as 'good looking,' 'ugly,' 'bad looking' etc.

I know a professor of mine who ogled merely at the mention of the name "Rajini" and I wanted to tease her by saying that he was dark (with a very heavy heart of course! :-) to see how she would react. She was very quick to reply.. karuppaa irundhaalum romba kaLai theriyumaa? mugaththla niraiya lakshanam! I was quite surprised at her response (because I never thought of her to be a potential Rajini fan at all and also surprised that I was a blind Rajini fan all along. I took the darkness for granted, without trying to explain it much. :-) Anyways, this is just to illustrate that indeed 'dark,' 'good looking' and similar thoughts are completely relative to all of us as individuals.

I like both Rajini & Kamal for a variety of 'different' reasons.. What Rajini does, Kamal doesn't have a prayer in this planet at even attempting!.. and what Kamal does, Rajini just plain can't do (and won't be allowed to do because the BO matters much more to him than Kamal! :-).. As for them being friends, it's very important that they are (and should always be!).. otherwise, the small turf wars that happen when Ajit-Vijay films release together, would be world wars in Chennai, if ever Rajini & Kamal's films release separately (let alone together! :-)

But if I have interpreted Anon's comment correctly, there is some truth in his/her words. "There is indeed very little vanity when they appear in public" (if he/she meant makeup or glamour:-).. That's probably why my heart doesn't skip a beat or I don't get goosebumps seeing them together at public functions anymore.. Their appearance on screen is markedly more appealing, I suppose! :-) ;-)

Very much true :-}

Santhana Bharathi and P.Vasu were together directed as 'Bharathi Vasu' for couple of films (not sure how many films they directed together) and parted ways. After that, Santhana Bharathi has been with Kamal hadn't directed Rajini. And P.Vasu has been with Rajini and hadn't directed Kamal.

Bharathi Vasu were assistants to Sreedhar, and Kamal knows P Vasu very well from their Izhamai Oonjaaladugiradhu times.
