Almost Out...

So, for all practical purposes, India is out of the World Cup. Losing to Sri Lanka today, it pretty much sealed its fate, having lost 2 out of its 3 matches. The sad part is, it looks like the match today wasn't even close. Checking the scores regularly, it was pretty apparent that Sri Lanka was completely in control throughout the match. Both our batting and bowling (more the former than the latter though, mainly because of its strength on paper) seem to have let us down today as our bowlers let SL score 254 and our batsmen then surrendered meekly for 185 without a fight.

India still has a slim chance of sneaking through to the next stage, if Bangladesh loses to Bermuda on Sunday. But even after taking into consideration the vagaries of one-day cricket, it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. Bangladesh has obviously improved its game and is no pushover and with the knowledge that a loss would mean they are out of the World Cup, they will play extra hard. So come Sunday night, our players might be headed back home.

I guess there is atleast one silver lining around the dark cloud of today's loss... It proved that the rumors of match fixing were untrue (though, as my brother mentioned, a really cynical view could be that India played so badly that they lost inspite of the match being fixed!).

Meanwhile Woolmer's death has made the World Cup resemble an episode of CSI! Since it is now clear that he was murdered, the Pakistani players gave their DNA samples today. And in the latest development, two of the players have been asked to stay back in Jamaica though the entire team was supposed to fly back tomorrow.

balaji i think the whole team is being detained. and did you read that they suspect that the roon service that he had ordered was drugged? i think he would have been murdered whether pakistan won or not. what they wanted was to silence his book. god bless his soul.

this is the third murder that is happening in this hotel. as the plot thickens, i keep getting reminded of the quiditch world in harry potter and the goblet of fire.

Like our 'strong batting line-up' lopsing to Bangl.;I hope Rajini's Sivaji also flops.Because Chiranjeevi's fans do not go about attacking other lang. superstars in a way as bad as these Rajini fans in this blogosphere(Except some good ones like BalajiB);though Chiru is equally big and more talented. The fans' 'thimiru'(Arrogance)
must be shattered.Let's hope it occurs.

Here is an interesting trivia. As of today Australia have a 14 world cup match winning streak. Now here is the cool part. Their winning streak started on the finals of the 1997 world cup.

Now one may wonder how any team could start a winning streak on a final.

Relating to S. Ganesh Kumar's chant of Chiranjeevi being more talented than Rajinikanth......I burst into a fit of laughter and curled up laughing.

Chiranjeevi is deemed like a god in Andhra as his main competitor in the dark 80's of tollywood was th little more than useless Mohanbabu, that's why he is famous..

My mate told me he is renowned for his dance and I exploded into tears of laughter

Face it, Chiranjeevi isn't he major star in Telugu let alone India!!!

Despite being a huge England fan, I would like India to go through as

*For the interests of the neutrals
*Dwayne Leverock's sake

HeHe :-)

"It proved that the rumors of match fixing were untrue "

Do u think matches will be fixed for India's victory alone ? Remember bookies and advertisers are different. Bookies don't care who should be in the game for long. All they care is about how much money they will get to keep. So if odds are in India's favor the match will be fixed to India's detriment.

Now advertisers will lose if India crashes out but hey then they have to bet against India so the bookies will fix the match for India. So match fixing is still alive and kicking.

At 2:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Balaji, The fact is India had its own weaknesses. Srilanka and Bangladesh exposed it.

However I do hear a rumor going rounds that the Indians were threatened by the bookies. Don't know to what extent it is true .

If it is true it is still worse.

I know nothing will happen and the team will remain intact even after this defeat. But after watching sharad pawar's interview feel that the old guards will be shown the door.

Get your statistics right.Mohan Babu was not even a hero in 1980s;leave alone a competitor to Megastar. He became popular as a hero only in 1990s(And lost it immed.)During the 1980s;he'd better competitors like Krishna,Balakrishna(Ofcourse;a waste product.),Sobahn Babu and later Venkatesh,Nagarjuna.
Regarding "dark 1980s",some of the best movies like SwathiMuthyam,Sapthapadi were made in 1980s.Chiranjeevi has many good movies to his credit like Swayamkrushi,Subhaleka,Aapathbhanduvudu,Rudraveena etc. apart from regular commercial movies.
As a villain(Early days);but he improved as a hero.
I did not say he's no.1 in India. Right now;he's assumed to have lost the no.1(In Telugu) to Mahesh Babu(My fav. Telugu actor.);but then if you see Rajinkanth has acted in just 4 movies in 8 years. That's why they're so big hits.Or else;he too might've lost his status to the current deserving yooungsters like Vikram.

There is no number one in Telugu cinema. You are only as good as your last film. If Maheshbabu's next film flopped, he would be under pressure to deliver a huge blockbuster in his following film to stand in his position. Regardless, of course, he has the bias of Telugu media and solid Krishna fans backup. But any hero, is only as good as his last film in these days.

Why does India opt to chase everytime its a crucial World Cup match? We chose to chase and crumbled to Sri Lanka 2 world cups back in the semis..result: Kambli burst into tears, we lost to the Aussies in the previous World Cup final...result: India burst into teas. And now this shameful exit. The list goes on to prove we plain buckle under pressure everytime we try to chase on crucial/ high pressure matches. But we will still win the toss and elect to bowl.. Damn the Indian squad. Plain depressing.

Indians did not lose not because they did not have the talent.. But more because of their lack of team spirit[was unable to see the joy or celebration when a wicket was down especially if the wickets was not in the first few overs] and lack of fitness[In every match, indians were full of enthu in the first few minutes, then their spirits & efforts just went down]. So i think the most of the blame lies with the coach and support staff. Also it looked like Indians already lost the match in the mind.. thinking they can't fight against the great teams.. [May be Bangladesh loss did a lot of damage to their self-belief] Hoping the loss brings a group of young guns to the teams full of zeal and energy.

At 6:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They got the team composition all wrong to begin with. The average age of Indian team is one of the higest in the tournament. Every senior member wants his own lack key in the team. For example Tendulkar needs Agarkar in the team, guess Bangalorean Uthappa played all 3 due to Dravid as did Shewag.

I would have played Irfan as it would have bought better balance to the team. Srishant was given a raw deal for being himself with the seniors, his aggressiveness would have been of good use for early break throughs.

One year Chappel worked to bring in all new players, only for Vengsarkar to come in and bring back players like Ganguly(He never rotates the strike) and Kumble(Played a very crucial match against Bermuda). I would have prefered Ramesh Pawar, Raina and Kaif (Both Kaif and Raina who would have fielded better.) Instead of rushing back Yuvraj who was clearly not in his elements as far as his fielding goes.

Anyway my current worry is with a Bombay guy leading the board, I hope they do not bring back the current vice captain as the Captain as for sure Dravid is gonna be removed. That would be the biggest step backward for Indian cricket.

The biggest problem is with our attitude.Even if we bring brand new young, talented and extraordinary players by hook or by crook;they'll play well for a couple of years and once again fall down;once they become 'Icons'.
Because;even if they play bad tey'' not be removed for their 'past records'.So we must aadopt the Australian method of temporarily removing a player if he's not playing well for the past 5-6 mathes and dump him altogether;if he never wants to improve;even if he has a good 'past track record'.(Like the way Damien Martyn;Mark Waugh etc. were treated.)If we're like that;why one World Cup;each and ever series which comes by the way will be won by India;or else we'll just flatter to decieve.
For eg.;Dhoni was initially playing well for a year;but once he became 'popular icon';he did not care to play so well.

//Vikram a young actor? - You get ur facts right!//
It's relative youngness.In sports;if you're aged above 30;you're old.While in cinema;30s is the young age.
//what is that movie with chiranjeevi and sri devi? where she's like an angel dropped from above?//
That's Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari(World hero;universal beauty);based on some folklore.
//There is no number one in Telugu cinema. You are only as good as your last film. But any hero, is only as good as his last film in these days.//
That's what I too would like to say.I believe Rajini was almost ignored after Baba's failure;but now he's been given so many praises after Chandramukhi's success. That's why I've wanted Shivaji to flop;so that Rajini fans do not 'masquerade' as film critics in this blogosphere.

raj, the news about only 2 pak players being detained was the rediff article...

ganesh, guess the minnows weren't in a charitable mood. now we're really out :)

drshravanan, interesting... do u have the answer also?

karthik, my comment on match-fixing was quite simplistic. i read all those stats about the money/viewership lost if india lost and hence thot india would've won if the match had been fixed (esp. since sri lanka was already in). but point taken on the advertisers/bookies difference...

sriram, after every major loss we hear such statements from BCCI and politicians about big changes in the team. but politics and corruption ensure nothing much happens...

shwetha, i think i saw the same analysis/question on raju's blog too... we have a big history of buckling under pressure. but even if we chase, the bowlers r gonna be under pressure. so i guess the thot is that our batsmen will handle pressure better than our bowlers :)

robin, prem panicker made the same point about our fitness and our players' energy levels going down as the match progressed...

KP, havent been following the game all that much and so those names arent much familiar. but its clear we need some young blood. and ur last worry is on my mind too...

ps: i don't think there's been another post where the comments got so off-topic from the subject of the post! even considering anon's comment about sivaji, i have no idea how that led to a rajni-chiru fan fight!

Dear Mr.S.Ganesh Kumar,
Do you own this blogosphere? If not, shut up. Have you read your own blog? Its a badly written insignificant pile of shit and its wasting internet bandwidth. Do everyone a favour and delete your blog. First, you learn to write sensible posts, try to improve your knowledge and taste in movies(stop watching oscar nominated movies) and then you can earn the right to comment about Rajini or his fans.

Ganesh, don't you dare compare Rajini with that sellout Chiru. Apart from being miles ahead in style and acting abilities, Rajini is the only star who has not used his superstar status to endorse a single product till date.

guys, relax...this post is abt the world cup and india's dismal fate at the tournament...not abt rajnikanth or shivaji!

anyways, back to the topic...this kinda "looking good on paper, but not on field" is nothing new to Indian cricket...the famed Indian batting which boasted of the likes of Gavaskar, Srikkanth, Amarnath, Vengsarkar, Shastri, Patil and Kapil Dev could not take their team to a single Test win (let alone, a series) in the four years starting '81. we remember them for their individual achievements but not for collective efforts...sure, we won the '83 WC and the '85 WCC but otherwise, we have always "looked" good...

back to the recent past, what exactly did we do after our 1-4 loss in the WI last year? we all got excited about the 1-0 Test series win...what exactly did the "thinktank" do after that loss in the Carribean...

well, its never too late...

Dear Team India,
welcome back...take a break...get some sleep...but please "wake up" to the realities of the game and your performances...
With Love,
A passionate fan

You go Guna! Well said :-P

Yes Ram and Balaji, however I believe the heart of the future team relies on the immediate ceasure of Dravid's captaincy reign, clearly he is like the local Tamil shopkeeper - picking his favourites to use.

EG.

*Sehwag, when he was out of form for about 15 innings or so - the likes of Kaif, Yuvraj, Pathan were dropped but Sehwag wasn't - worrying.

*Agarkar played instead of Pathan due to Dravid's selection policy.

*Finally, our resident Keralan and India's best fast bowler, Sreesanth was also left out for a North Indian, Munaf Patel - Appalling.

Firstly, the captain's armband should be passed to Yuvraj Singh.... I think as.....

*Sachin, Sehwag not influential personalities any more

*Ganguly, too old

*Kaif, not permanant

*Uthhaps - too new.

Hell, do the Indians need a make over!

Ram,

The main problem is domestic cricket is screwed beyond repair..

This is where Aus and SA are ahead, the former is like way ahead, see Tait and Watson they bowl sensibly considering this is their first world cup..

It's better if these guys play county cricket for a few yrs before coming into the team

At 7:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The answer quite simply is Aus-SA 1997 world cup semi finals was a tie.

At 7:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

sorry meant 1999 world cup semi finals between Aus and SA was a tie

At 8:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

In domestic cricket, players who represent the country dont play.
so players who play Ranji trophy and duleep trophy face not so good opponents. So there is no scope to improve their game.

Even now those who are lamenting about India's loss are only worried about the commerical aspect and not about cricket per se.

Ram has written right.
He was right because if Saurav was the most successful Indian captain;it means that even our ‘unselfish team’ of 1980s(Which played for pleasure, not money;as some say.) had a success rate of below 50%.I’ve watched cricket since 1994(When Sachin scored his 1st ODI century.). During the 90s, except Sachin and Azhar;no one played well.
(Rahul and Saurav played well from 1998 only.)
When India went out in super sixes in ‘’99,there was not a big protest because,no one thought our team was good. Also;we used to lose to West Indies,Sri Lanka and SA in our own soil!
So;it’s not a big problem. We’ve always been like that.Except that;guys of today are more talented, who won a good no. of matches during 2001-03,but became lazy since then,as they got the ‘popular icon’ status.
Guna:
I know I write stupid things in my blog.
//try to improve your knowledge and taste in movies(stop watching oscar nominated movies)//
I've watched very few Engl. movies and I preferred Oscar nom. movies, because I was aware of their quality(Or lack of it.) only thru.the media attention thrown on them.By the way;I do much more things than just watching movies.
// don't you dare compare Rajini with that sellout Chiru. Apart from being miles ahead in style and acting abilities, Rajini is the only star who has not used his superstar status to endorse a single product till date.//
With regard to acting abilities,I've seen enough no. of movies of both heroes and I know Chiranjeevi is way better.Do not try to force me to change my opinion. Also;I did not tell that Tamil cinema is worst or better compared to Telugu cinema.(I know both are of almost same standard.)
I've just talked about 2 stars-one an actor-star,another-a lucky star.
