Sun TV's Independence Day Programs

Sun TV programming is completely dominated by megaserials, films and programs that, under different names like Neengal Ketta Paadal, Ungal Choice, Comedy Time, etc., show the same bunch of film songs and/or film clips. So I’ve pretty much stopped watching the channel except on festival days or when they telecast special programs like award shows. But of late, even the programs assembled together for festival days have lost their appeal since they lack imagination and show no variety.

This Independence Day will see another bunch of lackluster programs on Sun TV. The only one I’m even mildly interested in is the interview with A.R.Rehman (since it’s on at 7.30am, I can hopefully catch it before I leave for work tomorrow). A program where Surya meets some army men seems to be the only program that could be considered remotely patriotic and hence, is a suitable program for Independence Day. And then there’s the pattimandram (which has produced some stars like Raja) but it doesn’t look like the topic is related to patriorism.

Other than that, there are interviews with cine personalities like Namitha, ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Vishal, none of whom look like they would have anything interesting to say. A song-based program including Manicka Vinayagam and Vaazha Meenukkum… fame ‘Gaanaa’ Ulaganathan and an interview with Vadivelu are also scheduled but the clips that were shown made me feel like I’d already seen these 2 programs (maybe for April 14?). The movies for the day are Kushi and Arindhum Ariyaamalum – 2 films that do not even tangentially address themes like freedom, patriotism, etc.

My complaint is not about the quality of programs in general but about the type of programs that are being telecast on this day. Considering that it is our Independence Day, is it so difficult to come up with even a few programs that are connected in some fashion to the historic day? Even accepting that only film-based programs attract viewers, we’ve had enough films with patriotic themes to feed several programs. How about a collection of patriotic songs? And a program that analyzes specific patriotic films or looks at patriotic films over the years? Since the first film of the day is a repeat, why not pick a film that deals with patriotism (there are enough popular films like Roja, Indian, etc.) instead of a film whose key scene involves the hero gazing at the heroine’s waist and which includes a song that goes Kattipudi Kattipudidaa….

We’ve been having the same kind of programs on such holidays for so long that the viewers are probably bored. Wish Sun TV would try something different just once. It just might turn out to be popular…

PS: I think the only I reason I'll watch Sun TV tomorrow is to see how many times I can catch Jo in that new ad for the RMKV reversible saree :-) She looks absolutely fabulous.

Albeit I am not getting a chance to see the SUN TV this time yet I have had the same comment in my blog for the poor standard of the programs telecasted for last year's I-Day. There is not even a remote connection to the programs and patriotism. Highly Disgusting !!!

Exactly my thoughts Balaji. I was disgusted to say the leasy..not a single program that addresses patriotism or is even remotely connected to that theme. I fact KTV was mo different. Vijay TV and Jaya TV were slightly better than Sun though at one point of time, all 3 were showing Vishal's interview!! I was wondering if all these private channels ever pay attention to viewer feedback. Even good old DD had "Edhir Oli".

Feeling nostalgic for the good old days, with DD showing patriotic songs for Iday? Sometimes simple is best.

But sadly this is a reflection of today's culture, don't you think?
What more can you expect from a channel, where the only exposure we have to culture is a 30 minute pathetic rendition of classical music or dance! BTW, what the heck is the selection criteria for these shows? I haven't seen a decent performance by anyone, esp in dance.

"Sun TV programming is completely dominated by megaserials, films and programs that, under different names like Neengal Ketta Paadal, Ungal Choice, Comedy Time, etc., show the same bunch of film songs and/or film clips"

well even these programmes have been removed from weekdays and moved to the weekend recently, in order to accomodate the great Meena megaserial. I felt like unsubscribing right at that moment, but am barely hanging on.

I wish we atleast had more options here in US. Have been hearing all the right things about Vijay TV airtel singer contest but sadly cannot watch it here. Having just SUN sucks

Balaji, Jaya TV has a better lineup for independence day. Even on other days Jaya TV is better(except news) than SunTV. I prefer to watch Jaya TV on the internet even though I have subscribed for the SunTV on Dish. You cant expect anything better from SunTV. The target audience for SunTV is different.
On top of everything SunTV is bad influence on kids.

BB, sensibly written post...yeah, i used to enjoy watching these stars and the filmy programmes during these occasions but over time, 've totally gotten bored with all the repetitive stuff. wont be watching any of the programmes today...but having said that, i usually like the New Year's programmes...the top ten songs/movies, the interviews, the "ulagam: oru paarvai" (dun exactly remember the title but its hosted by shahul hameed, the one compere who's never done a cinema programme till now...kudos to him), etc are all fun. this past new year's esp. enjoyed Sneha's chats on the phone with other stars...

but the issue of having programs related to the occasion...he he...Sun TV thaane...kizhichaange...will never forget this...and i am not exaggerating for the purposes of humor...they actually did this:
"Vinaayaga Chathurthi-yai munnitu, indhiya tholllllai kaakshigallil mudhan muraiyaaga, 'Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven!'"
Ganesa must be asking his Dad to open his Netrikann!

I think this is an odd slip in a blog that I otherwise enjoy. While I get the drift, this is badly written.

Come on guys, what else can you expect from a clan that runs the SUN TV except films and film based programmes related or unrelated to the day, but only related to currency. Anything film based is hot cash for them, who cares or for that matter why care about anyone's sensibilities, let us just use it to eulogize or to put it simply JALRA ADICHUFY their grand old man for a leader at every which opportunity with utter disregard to the audience and the event.

VIJAY TV is available on DIRECT TV and my friend says it is much much better than what is dished out by SUN TV, it has some programs like SIGARAM THOTTA MANIDHARGAL which are inspirational in nature and also provides ordinary citizens who have achieved something in life a chance to display their talent and inspire people.

TIME TO BOYCOTT SUN for while friends!!! WHATSAY!!!!

Good thots BB...my thots are on the same lines as that of yours. DD was atleast doing justice, they used to have patriotic songs on oliyum oliyum on the preceding friday to Independence day... Now the attitude of all these channels are like "Who cares for independence?". W

Balaji-

Watched a few mins of the ARR interview, as usual Vijay Sarathy, the interviewer didn't do a good job of asking more interesting questions and making the program lively. Anyways, LoLed at ur watching Jo's RMKV advt, guess the timing the advt. was shot is perfect.

subha, no surprises there. i'm sure i can reproduce this article verbatim(well... maybe changing the actors' names alone) next year and it'll still fit perfectly :)

lavanya, i think DD was a lot better. but then again, its owned by the govt. and so they better have I-Day themed programs!! funny that they were all showing Vishal's interview. happens all the time when u have a popular star whose movie is releasing(or in this case, has just released and is a surprise hit).

munimma, though i didn't mention it, that feeling of nostalgia was what prompted the whole post. DD had these rules for such days with specific songs for diwali, new year, I-Day, etc. was predictable but made more sense than what these channels r doing!

and that 30-min rendition this time was by sirgazhi sivachidambaram i think :)

vijay, now the mystery is solved. was surprised to see 'pepsi ungal choice' last weekend at an odd time. i guess now i know why :)

sriram, didnt check out Jaya TV's lineup. i expected more of the same thing. u've made me curious now. will chk it out...

Vijay TV was the best of all, as usual! There was this show called "Ethu Suthanthiram?", one of the best such shows I have seen so far. It went into the history of forgotten Tamil-origin political leaders, and how the current generation of those families suffer from not even getting a proper pension. It also went as far as to interview people on roads about country-related stuff. Most of the responses were sad, but I couldn't help laughing. One college student was asked to sing two lines of the national anthem, and she says: Oh, I used sing in chorus at school, so can't recollect the lines!!! A high-school kid says I-day is on Jan 26th, an old man says he doesn't remember which year India got freedom since "it was a long time ago". Even the regular game show Grandmaster was specially done for I-day. It did have many movie related programs too, but I never felt it was over-done or repetitive. Vijay TV simply rocks!

OK...Can you set yourself as a rolemodel,by describing what u did on india's independence day...I guess u would have working as usual on that day to gratify ur needs and no time to think and show PATRIOTISM.Let me see what u have as an individual
before commenting about commercials.
