Its War!

[Pic Courtesy MovieWeb]

I remember summers even a few years ago where I looked forward to a Hollywood flick releasing every Friday and the same night - or worst case, the weekend - found me at the multiplexes standing in line. But the movies on my Summer must-see list have decreased over the years and this summer, I really wanted to see only three movies on the big screen - Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins and War of the Worlds.

I have managed to see the first two already and the third movie in that short list releases today. Ofcourse it comes with a lot of expectations being a Spielberg film and Tom Cruise is icing on the cake. Their previous association, Minority Report, was a very intelligent film that won raves from most critics and won the first place in the year-end, top ten lists of both Ebert and Berardinelli. But Ebert is pretty harsh on War of the Worlds in his review today and Berardinelli's review isn't out yet.

Spielberg has dealt with sci-fi and aliens before in ET(which I liked) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind(which I didn't) but this is the first time he has the aliens as bad guys out to destroy mankind. As Berardinelli put it nicely, War of the Worlds is our chance to see how Spielberg would've made Independence Day!

am looking forward to the movie inspite of ebert's -ve review...
btw, whom do u like better? ebert or berardinelli? i think the latter is a bit arrogant while ebert's genuine love for movies is very appealing to a movie buff...and i like ebert's style a lot...every review is different in style and presentation wherease berardinelli has such a RIGID format...

i personally like berardinelli better. agree with u on ebert's luv for movies. but feel he rambles and sometimes i don't get whether he liked the movie or not. his logic's can be too convoluted sometimes. and i've disagreed with ebert on his rating of a movie more than with berardinelli :) btw, berardinelli liked it a lot better than ebert did...

yep... great list. sujatha didnt let us down :)

ioiio, hope i can c it on the big screen :)

I have to agree with Ebert's review. Berardinelli doesnt give a full thumbs up either. For a Spielburg movie this was underwhelming. The special effects are'nt out of the world(even for someone like me who isnt a fan of Star wars and hasnt watched the recent one) and the ending is weak. The movie has a couple of moments, thats about it. Nowhere near as original and gripping as Minority Report

wow vijay... saw it opening night i guess... lucky :)

could add a few more adjectives to 'minority report'... first among them would be 'intelligent'! that was amazing sci-fi...
