Puthaandu VaazhthukkaL
Along with Pongal and Deepavali, Tamil New Year's day has also been a day looked forward to by movie buffs because it was one of those special days when several movies got released. The most exciting one was probably Tamil New Year's day in 2005 as we had movies from both Rajni(Chandramukhi) and Kamal(Mumbai Xpress) releasing, with Vijay's Sachein bringing up the end. But since then, the day has lost its luster, so to speak, in terms of movie releases. 2006's April 14th wasn't too bad with Ajith's Tirupathi leading the pack. But 2007 gave us the first hint that New Year's day was losing its place as a day favored for releases. Cheran's MaayakkaNNadi was the most high-profile movie to reach theaters that day and the less said about the other releases the better. It was slim pickings again last year with Santosh Subramaniyam being the only notable movie to hit theaters. In fact, producers seemed to be avoiding New Year's day intentionally as high-profile movies like Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Arai En 305-il KadavuL opened just a few weeks before or after New Year's day.
This year April 14 sees no new movies being released for, apparently, the first time in the history of Tamil cinema. I had been hoping that Sarvam would make it but the combination of IPL and the Lok Sabha elections seems to have kept movies away from theaters. Though there's nothing to see, there is something to read though. Reviews of Laadam, TN-07-AL-4777, 1977 and Ayan are online @ bbreviews :)
Wish you all a very Happy New Year!

IPL is so much entertainment that even Robo would not risk its fate against it. Forget smaller movies.
But it's a welcome break, with the quality of movies nosediving so much i wish all directors took a sabbatical for a while!
is TN-07 al 4777 similar to changing lanes?
hey balaji u know this is the first time ur mentioning cricket lol, u shud share your thoughts on cricket once in a while u know, ieveryone would love it!
This may have something to do with the fact that our screwball of a CM decided that Pongal is the actual Tamil New Year's day and April 14 should not be celebrated as such. So guess the producers don't want to risk the ruling party's ire by releasing a movie on April 14 (now called Chittirai Thirunaal)!

chithirai thirunaall nalvazthugall :-)
good to see the bbreviews page still being updated in spite of your blog being updated regularly...1977 review innum konjam unga nakkal style-la kizhichirukalaam! i heard the movie was pretty terrible...was laughing out loud at The Hindu review...
Balaji,
have you watched Lucky Number Sleven? I was reminded of that with the initial scenes of Laadam. Haven't watched Laadam completely to make a judicious judgement yet :) But Sleven is pretty racy and suspenseful.
And nethu thaan yaavarum nalam parthom. Your review was bang-on, as always :)
Nowadays everytime I suggest a movie, The Mr insists I show him your ratings before I switch on the movie :)apparently you have a better taste in movies than I :)

Happy New Year to you and your family Balaji :)
anon, but no releases just for new year's day. according to sify, there are lots of new releases lined up for the rest of the month. so looks like they're not too worried about IPL :)
anon, a little bit. its a pretty close remake of the nana patekar-john abraham starrer 'taxi no. 9211', which was based on 'changing lanes' :)
mukund, not true. i did write about the last world cup in '07! just that i don't follow cricket as keenly as I used to :)
kumar, that does sound like a more possible reason. then again, apr 14 was still tamil new year's day last yr :)
ram, both blog and reviews site have been hit cos work's really busy. missed reviewing a few films('padikkaadhavan', kaadhalnaa summa illa') too.
and yes, '1977' was pretty horrible :)
kumari, did watch 'lucky number slevin' but remember it too hazily to make a connection with 'laadam'. and do convey my thanks to the Mr. :)
venkat, thank you :)
namitha, thank you. and another one for that link. answered a question that's been around for a long time :)
Sivajini, than you :)
