The Oscars - 2007

After a year's break when I missed the Oscars, I watched this year's telecast yesterday. There were a few fun moments but on the whole, the program was a big bore. There was not a single moment that really stood out and Ellen's jokes, the acceptance speeches and the performances were all uniformly pedestrian.

The biggest reason to watch the show was ofcourse the eye-candy. Among the best lookers were Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet and Beyonce. On the other hand, this is probably the first time I've been disappointed with Cameon Diaz's looks.

My favorite part of the telecast is always the opening sequence. They are usually funny and interesting and I still remember some of the earlier montages and Billy Crystal's entrances. But this year's montage, with clips of all the nominees, was dull and uninteresting. The entire program's about them. So why not leave them out of the opening?! With that montage, the telecast started off on the wrong foot and it went downhill from there.

Ellen was sweet and cheery as always but most of the jokes in her monologue were lame. Barring a couple of witty jokes (like the comparison between Jennifer Hudson and Al Gore), her collection fell flat. Her interactions with the audience(like the script to Scorcese and the photo-op with Clint Eastwood) worked a little better though. I really miss Billy Crystal!

I loved those shadow people creating images from the Best Picture nominees. Some of them, like the ones for Little Miss Sunshine and Snakes on a Plane, were brilliant. The chorus by the sound effects choir, that generated 'manual' sound effects for scenes from some popular films, was another segment that was good. The song-and-dance by Will Ferrell & Jack Black and the Celine Dion performance though were completely boring.

Al Gore, the butt of countless jokes for being boring, had probably the most interesting acceptance speech. Helen Mirren was dignified, Forest Whitaker was too emotional and most of the others were boring with just a bunch of Thank-You's. Among the presenters John Travolta had a good-natured dig at himself but not many others made any memorable comments.

The OSCARS has always been just that - PEDESTRIAN.

Perhaps overtly rated as the single accolade that really matters in moviedom. Unfairly so...

Kamal once remarked the OSCARS are in no way an endorsement of the highest aesthetic order...In fact, the voting academy is just a bunch of highly politicised 5000+ members voting for their favourites. The world at large and it's audience are truly the finer & final judges...

Agree with you fully on Cameron Diaz. She looked as though she had just woken out of bed and walked in straight to the Kodak theater. Another one who looked pedestrian was JLo. Like everyone has been commenting, they need to cut down on the length of the program to keep it more entertaining. Wonder how the TV rating was yday, compared to last year's show.

Balaji,
I am long time reader, first time leaving a comment. Did you notice how there was no mention of Indian cinema, in the tribute they had for foreign cinema ? Now whats up with that.

i do think indian cinema is too culturally different for them to really understand it.....they can see it as some happy musicals but nothing more.....

i personally liked this year's oscars...those people shape things were pretty cool and i thought ellen did a good job overall....

srivatsan, i agree. but i also used to think the same about cameron diaz :(

anon, i agree. never thot the oscars were representative of quality or that they were unbiased. just watched them for the entertainment value and the glitz. sadly, even those were lacking this year...

filbert, yep they defly need to cut down the length to keep viewers. and looks like viewership was about the same as last year.

dr, thanx for commenting :)
i initially thot they'd show atleast 'lagaan'. but then i assumed that the tribute included clips from previous 'best foreign film' winners only. if that was the case, makes sense indian cinema wasn't mentioned since we've been nominated but haven't won(I think)...

anon, yep those people shape things were the coolest part of the entire telecast :)

You said it right. In addition to Travolta, I thought Sienfeld made a pretty witty presentation for the best documentary. Im hoping that he'll be roped in as a host soon.

Btw, here is what inspired the Academy to recruit shadow dancers for last night.

The above ad caught the attention of the acedemy awards organizer resuting in the best section of Sunday's program. The group, Pilobolus is a non profit organization dedicated to modern dance, based in Washington.

Filbert Said, "She looked as though she had just woken out of bed and walked in straight to the Kodak theater."

...which is probably how they all look without makeup anyway...
