Tamil Film Music Tag

Finally got around to filling up the Tamil Film Music list that Nithya tagged me for.... It is an insanely difficult list primarily because of the sheer number of choices available to select from.

No of albums I own... Maybe 20.
Earlier my brother used to send cassettes with the best songs from different movies and then came MP3s. So been a while since I bought an album.

First album that I bought... Maappillai

Last album I bought... Johny/Priya/Dharmayudham

Currently listening to... Andha Naal Nyaagagam... from Adhu Oru Kanaakkaalam

Albums that I’d take with me, if I am alone on an island...
Idhayakoil
Ninaivellaam Nithya

Ten Songs that I am mostly likely to sing/hum...
Devuda Devuda... (or the latest Thalaivar intro song:-)
Thaazhampoove... - Kai Kodukkum Kai
Raja Raja Chozhan Naan... - Rettai Vaal Kuruvi
Andhi Mazhai Pozhigiradhu... - Rajapaarvai
Valaiosai Kalakalavena... - Sathya
Mandram Vandha... - Mouna Raagam
Ilamayenum Poongaatru... - Pagalil Oru Iravu
Aarariraaro... - Raam
Vellai Pookkal... - Kannathil Muthamittaal
Satham Illaadha... - Amarkkalam

Favorite singers...
SPB
Yesudas

My favorite lines…
I place a lot of importance to lyrics when I listen to a song but can never recall them on demand! So if I can recollect the following lines, it should give you an idea as to how much they have captivated me...

Vaanamagal Naanugiraal... Veru Udai Soodugiraal... - Ponmaalai Pozhudhu...

Valaindhu Valaindhu Pogum Paadhai Mangai Moga Koondhalo
Mayangi Mayangi chellum Vellam Paruva Naana Oodalo
and
Azhagu Migundha Rajakumari Megamaaga Pogiraal
Jarigai Migundha Selai Kondu Malaiyai Mooda Paarkiraal - Senthaazham Poovil...

Thanimaiyile Verumaiyile Ethanai Naaladi Ilamaiyile
Kettana Iravugal Suttana Kanavugal Imaigalum Sumaiyadi Ila Mayile - Andhi Mazhai...

Mugilinangal alaigirathe, mugavarigal tholaindhanavo
Mugavarigal thavariyadhaal azhudhidumo, adhu mazhaio - Ilaiya Nila...

All lines from Satham Illadha...

And a recent naughty but clever line
Sutta Paal Pola Dhegam Dhaandi Unakku
Adhil Paalaadai Mattum Konjam Vilakku... - Andankaakkaa...

Since this tag has been propagating for a while, I'm not sure who has completed this list and who hasnt. So I am not forwarding the tag to any other bloggers. But feel free to pick it up and fill it if you are so inclined :-)

    "Jarigai Migundha Selai..."

Its actually "jarigai neliyum selai kondu"

currently listening to: Elorum Sollum Paatu from Marubadiyum...

Alone on an island, I'd take Mouna Raagam and Roja

Ten songs i am likely to hum:
    senthaazham poovil
    andhi mazhai
    mandram vandha thendralukku...
    punjai undu...
    kaadhal rojave...
    elorum sollum paatu...
    pachai kiligall
    theem thananaa...
    nenachu nenachu (sethu)
    aarariraaro...

    fav singers: SPB, Chitra

    Fav lines:
too many to list...but one line that i sort of tell myself pretty much everyday is the one from marupadiyum:

    manidhargall sila neram niram maaralaam...
    manangalum avar gunangalum thadam maaralaam...
    ilakkanam sila neram pizhai aagalaam...
    ezhudhiya anbu ilakiyam thavaraagalaam...

doesnt sound very optimistic but has loads of truth in it, i think....

maverick....balaji was the one who introduced me to Illiaraja songs...but as i kept hearing more oh his songs i just became an ardent fan of him....there are so many of his songs which are mind blowing.....for instance songs from Niram Maaradha Pookal(MuthalMuthalaga) or Chitukuruvi(EnKanmani) or Punnagai Mannan(Edhedho) . U can hear these songs n no of times

its difficuilt to name my top 10 favorites but "Illamai enum Poongaatru..." still remains my favorite....the evergreen voice of SPB with the classic music of Raja makes it my all time favorite .

  4. those poetic lyrics from "senthazham poovil..." song has so much of meaning..that the present day lyricists vulgar lines cannot match.

yours is a classic list, bb.

Hmm..from the predominant choice of Ilayaraja songs here, once can guess the age group of the bloggers here :-) Most in the late 20s to mid-30s.

Lyrics mukkiyamna, you guys have plenty of choices from the 60s.

    Good List BB...

One of my fav. lines in film songs is...

    "Nee aadai aNigalan soodum araigaLil
    rOjA malligai vAsam
muga vaervai thuLi adhu pOgum varaiyinil
    thenral kavarigaL veesum"

That's from "Nee dhaanae endhan" Ninaivellaam Nithya...

Ram.c... That's too drastic a statement... Even older songs have horrible lyrics... If only you hear "Aayiram Nilavae Vaa" properly... One of the worst in my opinion, when it comes to double meaning lyrics...

At the same time, you have amazing lyrics from the new age songs too...
    How about this one?

    "pasikonda naeram thaalikkum oasai
    sandhoasha sangeedham"

Remember the song "Poo Pookkum Osai"... There are really nice songs that come up even today... It is your choice whether to listen to them or not...

  9. mav, MP3s vandhappuram i end up sending CDs to him :-) and yes, IR-SPB combo is definitely tops in my list. The rajni thing's probably just a coincidence :)

    ram, correction noted...

    vijay, yep mid-30 thaan *sigh*

packer, good list. i do exactly the same thing. have a collection of fast-beat songs for running time. btw, apdi podu is from 'gilli' :-)

krishna, 'aayiram nilave vaa'?! wow. didnt know what. will check out the lyrics next time i listen.
but agree fully with your comment on vulgar nature of some older lyrics. mgr was the biggest culprit i think. the 1 song i have noticed is from 'urimai kural'. blatantly sexual and very suggestive lyrics.

  10. Nice Balaji... I totally forgot I left out "aarariraro"for the one I came up with.. and my tag thingie was missing the lyrics one.. I should edit hmmm...

anyways... this is off topic; but did you watch The Ring & The Ring 2? WOuld like to know your thoughts on it =)

Merino, what movie is the song "aarariraro" from? Incidentally, I finally managed to locate "megamae megamae" online :)

  15. Anonymous9:22 AM

aarariraro is from the film "Raam."

  16. Anonymous9:35 AM

Oh...thx...I am trying to locate a song that starts with "aararo" (possibly sung by Banupriya?) in a late 80s or early 90s movie. Anyone?

  17. Anonymous10:38 AM

i;ve been trying to locate "Kamban Engu Ponaan" from Jaathi Malli...anybody??

btw, aaraaro? is it the song that goes "aararo...aarao...elelo...naan vero" or something like that...? rings a bell but not sure which movie it is...yeah as merino said, maybe that hilarious bhagyaraj movie set in a mental institution--"aaraaro aariraaro"

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous10:58 AM

The aaraaro song is from the film 'Anand' (Prabhu and Radha),composed by IR and sung By Latha Mangeshkar

  19. merino, saw 'ring' on the big screen. we like these PG13 horror flicks with not too much gore but enuf scares. a bit creepy but too vague for my liking. havent seen ring 2 yet.

ram, i'm guessing that line conveys sadness on the 'lowly' minds of people...

i think there r too many 'aarariro...' songs! apart from the raam one we have

aaraaro aararo nee vero naan vero... (ram, i think this is the one u're talking about)

    aarariro paaduvadhaaro thoongi ponadhaaro...

r the 2 i can recall... not sure which movies either of those r from.

bj, if so, why does he immediately add, "pattam thara thaeduginren...engey andha nayagan?"

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous1:30 PM

Yeah, its definitely "aararo aariraro" and that line ends with "llai". Next line might start with "vun paer solla..." but am not sure...

  24. I was googling for 'unnai kaanada kannum kannalla' and reached here. I absolutely love this song. Many many years ago, I happened to hear someone singing this song at the sannidhi at Kapaleeswarar kovil in Mylapore. The air was rent with a deep sense of devotion and the lyrics took on a whole new meaning.
